Who wanna see my freaky hyde and lisa art???ā¦.nobody?ā¦.okā¦

Mr vaquero
Apologies if you have answered this before, but where have you found R.L. Stevensonās responses to Myerās letters about Strange Case? I want to read them but I am unable to find them. I might just be bad at googling.
I found them mentioned in Arata's essay The Sedulous Ape. Here are some screenshots of note:
And sorry for not answering earlier @jayshypocrisy !!!! It's been a busy couple of months for me.
After some digging, I finally found the full exchange between Myers and RLS!
From Robert Louis Stevenson: The Critical Heritage, you can read here!
This is so funny btw Myers is like āitās great but whyād you mix this one upā and Stevenson was like āthank you for the raving reviews. I was on a deadline and also on coke. not editing anything btwā
the sheer AUDACITY of this bitch to write multiple letters to the author about how heās mad that his headcanons werenāt canon in the text is a level of fandombrain that I had thought to be nonexistent in the days before twitter. some of his gripes are understandable (ex. why did hyde keep half of the murder weapon, why was carew in that part of town, etc) but most of this is justā¦complaining about the characters having self-contradictory traits. in the People Have Self-Contradictory Traits book.
heās mad that hyde doesnāt fit his ideas for the character? that hyde bought a painting, fixed a cup of tea, and has Jekyllās handwriting? that heās not canonically plural??
I would shrivel up and die of embarrassment at the thought of writing to an author who was still very much alive to demand that the work be changed to suit my headcanons. next time Iām shy about criticizing something perhaps I ought to channel the egoistic boldness of this random victorian man
FR I gotta admire Stevensonās patience though. I feel like a lot of his self admitted mistakes can have Watsonian explanations, though. Hyde wasnāt thinking straight at the time of the murder. Carew, like all other characters, might have things to hide and do things that donāt fit the readerās image of a well-liked MP. Humans are contradictory and strange and a little dumb; to me Strange Case is a celebration of how life isnāt as simple as weād like it to be, and why life is truly celebrated by reveling in said complexity. But it would be weird if I walked up to Stevenson while he was alive and demanded he concede thatās the message when he might have had other things in mind. Such as, for instance, that he forgot to clarify a lot of stuff because he had to turn a massive incoherent manuscript into a sixty page mystery book in like four months, while feverish.
Dunno. Thereās a difference between me saying Jekyll has some plural traits and Myers complaining to the guy who made him that he isnāt plural enough for his taste and it should be changed. Thatās weird! And entitled! And way more ableist than what Stevenson put to paper!
EXACTLY. like i would love to ask Stevenson what he thought watsonian explanations could be for the plot snafus that he made for doylist reasons, just to get more info on how he was envisioning the characters and how he might change things if he could. Iād love to get the inside scoop on what he thought was going through Hydeās head (ex. the bit where he explains he figured jekyllhyde was tidying the room as a way to keep occupied while freaking out). thatās so fun! but to go to the author himself and ask him to change things to suit your tastes is Just Plain Weird, Dude. sometimes headcanons are meant to stay in your head.
Oh yeah specifically his views re: Hyde and his tastes in art/decor feel very 1) personal and subjective and 2) disconnected from the bookās text⦠like⦠Whyād Hyde buy a painting if I canāt envision him doing so? Well, Jekyll would, right? You remember what the plot twist of the novella is, right, Fred?
(ALSO the point about JekyllHyde stress-cleaning is so real. I read him as a man obsessed with control and I can perfectly imagine him trying to make the lab look as normal as possible to not have to think about Imminent Death.)
ya!!! that was my reaction to a lot of itā just. did myers understand the twist??? what was his understanding (or misunderstanding) of the nature of hyde and of what Stevenson was trying to say??? especially his comment about āstyle too elevated for hydeā in the reveal scene to lanyon. I always read that section as a deliberate part of the revealā hyde using more jekyll-like language as he reveals his true identity, along with saying āOUR professionā rather than just āYOUR professionā to lanyon. itās like a split second foreshadowing. maybe it was a mistake on stevensonās part, but saying that hyde is acting out of character because heās talking like jekyll is just baffling to me
also totally w the cleaning, I view that as in tandem with the tea gripe (āneither j nor h would prepare in that minute way for comfortā) because to me it read like a clear attempt at preserving a false sense of normalcy. like, whatās the Normalest thing that jekyllhyde could do to calm himself down? probably make a cup of tea. self soothing with a hot beverage is literally not even an uncommon activity
also baffling that myers would continue to press the point about how hyde ought to be acting while distraught and sickly, to stevenson, who just told him he has extensive experience being Distraught And Sickly
Wow. This is a lot more than I expected. Thank you for the additional information and thoughts.
Youāre welcome!!! šš
@bug-enthusiast @hydey-hole
I have compiled so much in my mind the past month and with nowhere to put it down Iām now biting my nails that Iāll forget something! ARSGHSGSG
But!!! Iāve been thinking a lot lately abt how lonely Jekyll and hyde is (again). It goes w out saying really, but Jekyll, a (likely overweight) middle aged man who lives through the face of another man, hyde, who wouldnāt care or even be affected by the loneliness he feels.
Iāve spoken on this before, but through out the story (esp in ch 3 and 10) Jekyll makes it clear that he genuinely considered just abandoning everything and everyone (minus his money) to just be hyde in peace. Saying sht like āwhen I am no longer hereā but implying that hyde would still be. Even his whole line in ch 10 where āthe bargain may seem uneven- hyde wouldnāt be aware of all he had lostāā¦like gen contemplating. (Also, I mention Jekyllās age and most likely body type bc it makes him more prominent and noticeable. Heās tall, and handsome too, and while you could say Hydeās uncanny looks make him more noticeable he isnāt really regarded as suchā¦the maid who literally KNEW him didnāt notice him at first in ch 4. He also doesnāt stand out or make an effort to w his plain clothing and private demeanor.)
Where hyde is quick and energetic, Jekyll is lethargic or sedentaryā¦w him heās always sleeping or sitting by the fire. Yes he does go on a walk at some point, but heās mostly described to be in comfort and warmth w Hyde his whereabouts being a mystery, when he is mentioned heās on the streetā¦Hydeās discretion for the most part makes me think he didnāt want to be noticed, and certainly not by anybody Jekyll knew. Like if he stayed as hyde foeva he would still do evil things and keep a low profile. Itās not reckless, but calculated and itās only his impatience and probably how his brain works in that body that causes any of his outbursts. ig what I mean to say is I lowk wonder sometimes where the story could have gone if he chose hyde over Jekyll, and why he stayed w jekyll for so long in the first place. If he knew eventually he was too unstable in that shape to NOT kill someboday. Or ykā¦his love for uttersonā¦
