I gently pushed open my dorm door, getting slightly blinded by the sun peeking through the window of the upstairs dormitory. I groaned a little, attempting to shield my eyes as I walked down the hall, towards the stairs. As I emerged into the daylight, my eyes eventually adjusted to the new brightness. I smiled gently to myself and stretched my arms.
"What are you smiling at, boar?" A familiar voice scoffed from behind me.
"Oh, Felix! No reason really, it's just a nice day today."
Felix groaned and pushed in front of me, "we better head to class then." I agreed and followed behind him, accidentally irritating him as I strolled.
Once we reached our class, Felix parted from me and sat at his table, refusing to make eye contact as usual. I sat at my own table at the front, although I wasn't usually alone like that. Our professor came in, and began the class; yet (Y/N) wasn't here yet, and she normally isn't late either.
Seconds turned into minutes, minutes into hours. I kept tuning out from the professor's speeches, tapping my pencil on my table as I daydreamed worryingly. I snapped out of my trance after Professor Byleth snapped his fingers in front of me, asking if I was alright. I nodded my head weakly, although he didn't approve.
"Dimitri, if you aren't feeling well you shouldn't have turned up, I understand." I sighed and apologised. Professor ensured it was alright before waving me out the door, forcing me to rest. I quickly rushed to my room to drop my books off, before attempting to find (Y/N)'s room. After a long, yet rushed, stroll, I stumbled upon (Y/N)'s room. I put my ear up to the door gently, before knocking. I heard the most gentle sniffles, before my knuckles connected with the door, a loud knock echoed slightly. I heard movement behind the door, before the door opened with a creak, along with (Y/N) peeking out.
"Oh, Your Highness, why are you here?" Her voice cracked slightly, filling me with anxiousness.
"You aren't in class so I thought I should check up on yo-"
"Class is still in session, are you skipping?" She interrupted with a tease. I chuckled softly before replying, "no, Professor Byleth let me go. He thought I wasn't well myself, when in reality, I was just worried about you," I blushed a little, noticeably embarrassed. She giggled softly and attempted to reassure me.
"I'm alright, I'm just ill," she smiled, but that smile didn't reach her eyes.
"In that case, let me bring you some soup, that could help," I offered, but (Y/N) looked away, before shaking her head.
"I-I'm okay, thanks. Bye," (Y/N) closed the door before me, as I stood awkwardly. I sighed and knocked again, "(Y/N), I just want to help you."
"I know, but I don't want to make you ill. I'll be fine, Dimi." I sighed, defeated, before leaving and returning to my quarters.
I sighed as I stared out into the rainy darkness from my dormitory window. I grabbed my bulky coat for warmth, and decided to go for a walk, despite the pouring drops. I wrapped my jacket around myself tightly, and hid my hands in my pockets once I was engulfed into the dark, damp night.
I gently strolled past the greenhouse, the silence around the monastery being weirdly comfortable. Once I passed the fishing hut, a black silhouette caught the corner of my eye. They sat cross-legged on the edge of the pier, just looking out at the lake, and the raindrops melting within it.
I turned my body towards them, yet their back was to me. I took a step on the pier, alerting them. I saw them turn around, and our eyes met; her's sad, yet mine worried.
"(Y/N)?" I questioned. She looked back towards the lake with a sigh, before I continued, "you said you were ill, why are you out in the rain? It'll get worse."
"And why are you out in the rain?" She countered. I sighed, and moved to stand next to her. I lowered myself to the wet wooden pier beneath me, and stared out in the same direction as (Y/N).
"Are you entirely sure you're ill?" I inquired. All I got in response was a sigh, before I heard the same sniffles from this afternoon. "Y-You're crying? (Y/N), what's wrong?" I gently placed a hand on her shoulder, giving my arms goosebumps as my hand made contact with her wet clothes.
"That's the last thing I wanted to be asked. I may seem cheery but... everything is wrong. Every single happy emotion I've shown outwardly has been a facade. I didn't want to worry anyone, especially you."
I sat in awe as my coat only got more soaked by the second. The rain had picked up. I would have a cold by tomorrow for definite.
"(Y-Y/N), I..." I paused before I finished, "I'm sorry for not realising. I should ha-"
"No, Dimitri. Don't lie. You never would have noticed. No one did. Everyone believed I was happy, just so I wouldn't bother anyone." She sighed as a couple more tears trailed down her cheek. I sighed in defeat and pulled (Y/N) close. I held her against my chest, and closely at that.
"Cry your feelings out, I won't judge. Although we can't stay out here for long, you'll catch a proper cold this time," I chuckled softly, and after hearing (Y/N) giggle lightly made my heart calm for a moment. She hugged me back tightly before letting go and standing up, the warmth of her body heat left my arms. I stood up after and nodded my head, signifying if she wanted to leave. She nodded gently and we began to walk in the direction of her dorm.
It wasn't too long a walk thankfully. (Y/N) opened her dormitory door, and offered me to enter to get myself out the rain.
"Your clothes must be drenched. Once I've left, change in to something warm. I won't stay long, don't worry," I smiled gently, as (Y/N) smiled back. She grabbed a towel, and threw it to me for drying my hair temporarily, although I didn't understand why. "(Y/N), I just said I was going to leave in a moment's time, why should I dry my hair?" (Y/N) thought for a moment, then shrugged.
"Throw it back to me then." I obeyed and gently threw the towel back, but due to my height, hit her in the face instead.
"Ah! I'm sorry!" I panicked, only to be eased by (Y/N)'s laugh.
"Don't panic so much, it's only a towel, it can't hurt me!" She moved the towel, and from that emerged her smiley, laughing face. I blushed gently, embarrassed, and scratch the back of my head gently.
"S-Sorry! I just wouldn't forgive myself if I had hurt you," I said gently, feeling my cheeks blush deeper. I heard a small giggle from (Y/N) before she chucked the towel against my face in playful revenge.
"Take the towel with you, just to shield from the rain slightly until you get into your dorm," she smiled gently, making my chest tighten slightly. I shook it off and thanked her.
"I will be going now, so I don't delay you from changing out of your uniform. I will hope to see you tomorrow? Unless you do actually catch a cold this time," I teased with a chuckle. She waved me off dismissively, still with that gorgeous smile. I waved good-bye, then departed from her dormitory room.
I held the towel over my head as I sped-walked to my dormitory. I couldn't help but think of (Y/N). How happy she's been every moment in class, yet to see her like that on the fishing pier, it broke my heart. It was then I made a promise to myself.
To protect (Y/N) at all costs. She means the world to me.
