“Okay seems… highlyoptimistic,”                           Herbert scanned the room carefully, cataloging possible                            exitsand weapons. Drastic times, of course, called for                           drastic measures. “We need to decide now. I am capable ofdefending myself.”

Yes. I am aware that I haven’t been back. I am definitely working on it. I just need to get to Thanksgiving. Hopefully this weekend I’ll have some time to just get my life back together.

“Indeed I do have quitethe nerve, sir. I have the nerve because you are on my property, interrupting myexperiments!” Herbert snapped, rising to his full height. Which wasstill inches below the older man. His hands balled into fists to keep fromstriking the man. Very rarely did such indignation strike Herbert West, butthis man certainly wasn’t helping. “Whatdo you think you are, dressed like that? Some sort of movie star?” Herbertnarrowed his eyes. “If you value yourlife, I’d suggest you get off my property and keep your mouth shut.” Thefire dimmed slightly. Dan had to be returning home soon. He’d help clean thisungodly mess up.

                          West stepped towards the desk, enraptured by the old books.                           These were beyond any text he had ever seen. His breath                           was stolen from hislungs. He wanted more than anything                           to touch them, open them, take theirknowledge…                           He blinked, straightening politely. “I’m very sorry to hear that…”                           he picked up the fleshed book. Hisfingertips brushed the                           strange binding curiously. The secrets he had been vyingfor                           were locked away in these tomes. Gently, he returned the                            book to the table. “I’m not sure you understand the natureof my work, Miss West. I do not wish to cure sickness. I cure something elseentirely.                                                     Speak your price.”

                          West nodded quickly. “Andout of direct sunlight.”                           He placed the bottle in Matt’s hand. “And don’t come to me if it doesn’t work.”

                          West withdrew the bottle. “This cannot fall into the wrong hands. Only you can use it. T hatincludes your wife. She doesn’t need to know about this bargain. Agreed?”

                          Herbert pressed back against the wall, trying                            to make himself seem far smaller. He lifted                           his medical bag to his chest. “We agree then: no one must get their hands on the reagent. Perhaps there is a back exit…?”
