“we both know you’re good at everything you do, eunji.” youngmi couldn’t help the wide smile that spread across her face at the compliment. as a veteran of the industry, she was no stranger to the pressure that came with each comeback, the frantic preparations that the members hoped to every god in the universe would bring results, the lack of sleep they had to power through every day. harmony was a staple in the kpop scene -- at least youngmi thought they were -- but they didn’t have the massive success girl groups like juliette or reign did. come see me had been their first comeback with only 5 members, so the pressure had been amplified times ten -- especially considering the fact that they’d lost their best vocalist. “really?” she didn’t mean to sound so unsure, but her voice betrayed her. “i mean, that’s a huge compliment coming from you. thank you so much.” she blushed, much to her chagrin. “i’m working my ass off -- trying to pull off some of your old lines is stressful.”

youngmi laughed, shaking her head. “i’m not much for mobile games, to be honest.” she occasionally did a crossword or even a game of sudoku, but most of the time she spent on her phone involved scrolling social media, texting her friends, or reading. “i had a lot of schedules that day, so my lesson was at like 5am.” she rarely missed a day of vocal training -- liberty had her with a trainer 5 days a week.

youngmi grinned when eunhye’s response popped up on her phone right away. she could always count on eunhye to be there for her. sure, they were a strange match -- youngmi’s vocals and oversexualized image were constantly criticized, which likely put eunhye at a disadvantage in the press. but still, she never hesitated to spend time with youngmi or talk her through a sticky situation. she was eternally grateful; she just wished there was some way she could express that without making things awkward. i’ll have a drink waiting for you, she typed, grabbing a jacket and a face mask before heading out. 

youngmi didn’t know if it was her place to question izumi’s motives -- after all, she’d never even met the girl. still, though, something didn’t sound right about this situation. “is she, though? if you talk to people like that, they’re going to assume that you’re rude and maybe even a little entitled. i’m not saying izumi knew that when she practiced with you, but kindness and humility would serve you far better.”

youngmi sighed, picking her phone up and setting it back down several times before ultimately deciding to just type the damn message. as the years went by, it had gotten more and more difficult for youngmi to ask for help, at least in some areas of her life. vocal lessons? that was no problem -- she’d been working with a vocal coach since before she’d even debuted with harmony. but when it came to feelings or acknowledging that she occasionally had them, a knot formed in her gut. she knew, though, that eunhye would respond. she always did. had a shitty day. drinks?

it had been a while since youngmi and eunji had seen each other. there was no ill will between them -- youngmi understood completely why eunji had left liberty. she was a little surprised by eunji’s shift from singing to acting, but she supposed it made sense. some of eunji’s vocal parts in harmony’s older tracks had been shifted to youngmi, which. well, to say that was nerve-wracking would be an understatement. people already doubted her vocal abilities; comparing them to eunji’s would only make it worse. “how have you been?” she asked, genuinely curious. it wasn’t like she was asking because that was the polite thing to do. “i saw your last drama, by the way. you were great, as always.” 

“fair enough,” youngmi conceded, cheeks growing slightly pink. perhaps she’d been a little too rude right off the bat, but lord knows she’d gotten enough crap in the past to warrant a little defensiveness. “for what it’s worth, though,” she started, choosing her words carefully. “i think most seniors would rather you try your best with korean instead of opening with ‘you should go.’“
