the way roe replied had dinah rolling her eyes in an affectionate manner, the ghost of a smirk on her lips. of course. who was she to think she could tell anyone within the isley-quinzel family what to do? but there wasn’t much time to ponder on that more, mind snapping back to the present. the dangerous present. the present that had the fine hairs on the back of her neck standing up and her muscles rippling in earnest, coiled and excited to piston devastating blows to her opponents. dare she say she often enjoyed a good brawl.
“birdie! watch out!”
it was too late. a figure uncloaked themselves from the choleric dark of the alley, launching themselves in a head-on collision. in the background, gunshots. in the foreground, shockwaves lancing down her forearm as she delivered a severe hook to what she could only assume was a train-car of a thug, having successfully parried the raised blow he had aimed for her head. his jaw clacked audibly as he flailed backwards onto his back. before he could even motion to stand, the black canary was looming above him. the sharp heel of her boot produced the merest of grunts as it dug into the man’s sternum, and she leaned forward to wrap a delicate but brutal hand around his throat in a trapping chokehold. at once, his face flickered from unbridled rage to fear, air completely lost on him.
❝ ROSALINE! ❞ dinah snapped, glancing over her shoulder while she had the chance. at the bubblegum sweet girl’s feet was the lifeless corpse of the other thug that had been the source of the prior call. practiced eyes roved the body to find three distinct gunshot wounds, all in vital organs. ❝ we do NOT kill a n y o n e. ❞
❝ don’tcha go lecturin’ me , toots . i was savin’ your ass ! ❞ she doesn’t understand it . why she should save the lives of these cruel men who sought to abuse their power and attack these two women alone at night and . ooh , it makes her blood BOIL , rosaline isley-quinzel hates the patriarchy . hates these thugs right here . hates how much they remind her of ARKHAM . ( of men amped up on drugs . mindless zombies and skeletons in carcassed shells . of death and gore following her down every corridor until it’d nestled inside her cage of ribs like a dying bird and found itself a home ) .
so when another man steps out of the shadows, she’s literally rolling her eyes . the adrenaline’s in her veins and she’s reloading her gun as he barrels forward . this time she shoots only twice . once to the balls , incapacitating . a second time straight through his brains . WHOOPSIES .
❝ gotta admit i’mma preeeetty good SHOT ! ❞ the rascal proclaims as she parkours upwards towards a fire escape ladder, gun clenched between her teeth as her fingers curl around the metal bars and she swings herself up and over . lands on the balcony with a light thud and peers into the darkness , attempting to discern the number of thugs in the vicinity . ❝ t’a ya left , birdie ! ❞ she’s calling out now . firing off a warning shot to the oncoming wave of assailants . OOH . maybe there’s enough men that the pretty lil’ birdie’ll s c r e a m .

❝ that’s the spirit, roe.❞ a lazy grin on her face as she looked over at her companion. her mind was hazy and her body felt lighter than usual, but she didn’t mind. in fact she often enjoyed the way her body felt when she was high. it was a hell of a lot better than feeling the pull of the damn earth 24/7. ❝ since i wouldn’t be feeling so good without you, i’ll let you pick what we do. are we taking some stuff from one of the dorm rooms, tagging the library in pink and green, or something else that you’re brilliant brain comes up with.❞ the words spilled from her lips, without the fear of needing to be in control.

it’s hard to meet the other blonde’s gaze after those words left her lips. a moment of weakness, an overwhelming sense of longing that had took over. she had been avoiding the other girl too, the guilt at not being able to save her was too strong. ( maybe if you hadn’t gotten shot so easily then you could’ve, linnea. shut up! shut up. please. ) but the sound of popping gum pulls her gaze back up, a somber frown tugging at her lips. she knows what that sound means, knows that the need to comfort roe will rise up inside of her soon.
and still she can’t will herself to move any closer, even when she sees her ex’s eyes began to water. (did if count as a break-up if they were forced apart?) roe’s words sting more than linnea thought they could, pulling at her heart and twisting her stomach. her words are lost on her at first. how was she supposed to tell her that she had never been mad? that she could never be mad at roe? even though she was supposed to be a hero. supposed to be against villains. roe could never be a villian in her eyes. and then the apology reached her ears and it was like something clicked in her head. she took a step forward, her hand reaching up as if to touch roe, only for it to fall back down at her side. ❝ i was never mad at you, roe. if anything, i should be the one apologizing. i…i let you down. ❞
the silence is a breach in her flimsy cotton candy walls , shredding holes in the crystallized sugar and stabbing her in the heart . that tiny little thing’s beating so quickly , too quickly , the energizer bunny’s drums in her ears , roaring , and she’s losing her grip on reality . on this conversation . in her mind’s the sound of a man’s screams as they drown in merlot blood . in her mind’s the tightened grip of metal cuffs on her wrists . of an officer’s scoff as he shoves her against the copper . you murderer , he’d hissed in her ear , pressed the gun against her spine . and she should’ve done something . the rascal would’ve done something . to stand up for herself . instead , all she could do was tilt her cheek against the hood of the vehicle , stare mercilessly as paramedics sought to treat the girl she loves . so she’d submitted . let him drag her into the backseat . let him throw her against the cushions . watched through metal bars as she drove away . to arkham . to her home .
she’s not sure when she’s started trembling or stopped blowing bubbles , not sure when linnea had gotten so CLOSE , yet there’s a panic in her own effervescent eyes and the rascal wants so badly to reach out and grasp those fingers in her own but can’t . what’s the touch of an isley if not poisonous ? what’s the touch of a quinzel if not bloodied ? who could she be for linnea but a murderer , not a saviour ? how could she ever be the hero the lance needed her to be ? ❝ ya didn’t let me down , ❞ it’s a snap that’s unintended , bitter not from linnea’s words but from the quinzel’s own misfortunes . ❝ you could nevah let me down , linny . you’re th’a good one , you’re th’a one who’s goin’ places , who’s gon’ be doin’ good for this world . ya make everyone so proud’a you . ❞ even me , she almost says . wants to say . instead she just lingers there , with pleading eyes BEGGING for so much more than roe herself can give .

she has to BITE her own lower lip to stifle the wince that’d otherwise sing from bubblegum lips in a muted sigh . to be thrusted against the wall as though she’s nothing more than a rag doll ( to be thrown around the way those men in arkham tossed her , like she was nothing . meant nothing . would amount to nothing . ) , elicits a low growl from the rascal . in that moment she’s eris , goddess of destruction , she’s sharpened nails clutching harder at their grip around the woman’s throat . she’s hissing at the wrist now pinned to the slab behind her , and she has half a mind to throw the entirety of her force into a headbutt to stun her , fracture her nose and escape . but she’s got the edge with asphyxiation so she doesn’t bother . in fact , she doesn’t feel trapped . not yet . so that cheshire grin spidering across her visage is one of seething calm . of a venus fly trap preparing for the first bite of its prey . ❝ well ya fuckin’ should , ‘cause i’m gon’ be your worst fuckin’ NIGHTMARE . ❞ nostrils flare and she glares up at the woman , writhes against the grip on her wrist . and still she’s scolded . scorned . nobody tells rosaline isley-quinzel enough . nobody who’s lived , anyway . ❝ i won’t STOP unless ya somehow make me , so fuck you more . ❞
