On 12th March it will be National No Smaking Day, a day that has little significants to many people, but to a few it means alot.
Before 5th Febuary 2013 i was one of those people who did not really care to much. Â No Smoking day was always a target but never a reality. Â I would always aim to give up but would always find an excuse to not. Â In total i think it must have taken about 3 years to give up tobaco.
So why is this No Smoking Day so special. Â Well, this will be my first full year without smoking. Â There have been good days, and there have been bad days, but overall it has been a good experience where everyday has been a win.
How To:
Well this is a very big question. Â What works for one does not neccessariliy work for another. Â There is no 'One size fits all' solution and... i am sorry... it is not an easy path. Â What i will say though, is that if you do choose to take a leap of faith, the benifits and sense of well being and acheivment are truly amazing.
I tried all the handouts on offer, some i tried more than once with varying success. Patches, losengers, tablets and couuncelling ive done the lot. Â I have no doubt that given the correct circustances all of these are viable for many people, but not me.
I think what stopped me, and most probably most others, is fooling yourself into believing it is your time. Â Do not let anyone else tell you its time to give up smoking. Â This is a decision you MUST make yourself. Â Dont give up for anyone else, you MUST give up for you and you alone. Â Be ready and be prepared and let your close familiy (by close i mean wife or partner) know that you will be quiting so maybe a little cranky.
Many times i made the mistake of telling everyone i knew that i was giving up. Â This has pro's and con's. Â The pro's are that people will generally give you a little more space and try not to get on your nerves. Â The down side can be with other smokers. Â Most other smokers will be very supportive of you giving up smoking and some will be in aww and want to join you on your journey (be carful of this as if they fail, they may bring you down with them), however, some will tend to overcompensate, inadvertantly signalling they are going for a smoke while knowing that you cannot as you are giving up. Â For me this was the worst and really did my head in, especially when they all came back smelling of smoke. Â People do not mean to do this and it is not there fault, they are doing what they think is beat for you, this however, does not make it any easier. For this reason, the last time i gave up smoking i decided to not tell anyone other than my wife and childern.
The final solution
For me it was a simple decision of heath and family.  I have a beautiful family, my Wife, two great children and another one on the way.  At the time of my decision, there was just my eldist (who was then 3) and number two on the way.  To realy kick things off i asked my little girl to tell me off each time i had a cigerette, this i figured would remind me what i was fighting for.  'Daddy, Cigerettes will make you sick'  These words will stay with me forever, and will  remind me, everytime i feel like a smoke, why i gave up.
Thank you Mollie Mai, you were the best counceller i could of asked for :)
So, in conclusion, giving up smoking is a life changer. Â Do i t for the right reasons, at the right time and most of all do it for you. Â I promise that although to start with you may feel a bit rubbish, in the long run you will feel epic. Â Not to mention how giving up smoking will totally transform you active and sports life.
Yay for me!!
