Runaway Dream

The expression on Bria’s face wiped the smirk right off of Ciaran’s, as he leaned into listen to what was without a doubt going to be a very tragic story. A fuck..it was.. His eyes darkened with sympathy as he reached across the bar and took her hand. “Oh love…I’m so fuckin’ sorry.. I can’t..even imagine. I’ve never had a mate, started to think it just wasn’t in the cards for me. But I’ve known other wolves that have and..it’s an intense thing..” He sighed a little rubbing his face. She threw him a curve-ball then, bouncing right back from her story into asking him to kiss her. The gentleman in him wouldn’t let him do it just yet though, so he simply chuckled. “Maybe we should let them sweat it out a little longer, eh? And an ancient? I haven’t met too many of them, they’re pretty rare”

When he took her hand, she gave his a slight squeeze. The small gesture of affection was appreciated by the young wolf. “Intense. Yeah. That would be one way to describe it,” she said as a distant look overcame her. Thinking about him always brought about the same reaction. But she quickly came back to the present to add, “He claimed me as his mate when I was still human. I think he liked my fire.” A smile overcame her as she continued, “He tried to ‘tame’ me, and ended up with a mate. How’s that for a turn of events,” she asked with a small giggle. “Once we were free,” the word slipped from her mouth, “he bit me so that we could be together forever. Ironic, isn’t it? Now I have forever, but without him. Another, please,” she asked as she tilted her glass toward Ciaran. She couldn’t help but laugh that he would let the women “sweat it out.” It was obvious that he wasn’t comfortable enough, just yet, to do something like that with someone he just met. It endeared him to her all the more. “Yeah, he’d been around awhile. Seen a lot. He was wonderful in so many ways. I was lucky to have had the time I did with him.

As she watched out the window, she became increasingly more nervous. The back roads were unlit and not highly traveled. The buildings she saw were dilapidated, run down and, overall, it didn’t look like a very safe place to be. She was beginning to wonder if this service was such a good idea. “Um, this seems a bit out of the way, don’t you think,” she asked with a slight crack in her voice.

“It’s my back up plan, actually. I’m a psychology major. Performing arts is a my minor.” She knew she could talk too much at times and in order to try to keep it to a minimum, she pretended to look through her purse for...something. Nothing in particular, but damn, what could she pretend to look for? Then she found her lipstick and decided it would keep her quiet for a few extra seconds. Pulling out her mirror, to turned to face the window so as to no look like she was flirting with him, as she coated her lips with another layer of color.

“Nice, thanks,” she said with a smile. “Oh yeah. I’m good. No worries. I usually drive, but my car is on the fritz. Sorry. Not that you care, right?” She looked in the rearview to try to get a better look at the driver. He was rather cute. Normally she’d never do something like this, but a friend had explained the service to her. Surely they did background checks on the drivers. Still, she had a twinge of concern in the back of her mind.
