Hello, friends! It’s been a while (I know, I know, I’m the worst), but thank you all for sticking with me for this part! And it’s 11.5k words, so grab a snack and get comfy. 

Pre-read study guide in case you don’t speak fluent baseball: The “DL” is the disabled list, which is essentially a record of all current players who are unable to play for a prolonged period of time due to injury. There are nine batters in a batting lineup; the fourth is considered the very best, or “cleanup,” but 1-5 are typically the “better” hitters. A bunt is a tiny hit that is a strategy to advance a runner on first base over to second and therefore put him in scoring position. A walk-off is when the home team gets a hit in the bottom of the ninth (last) inning that puts them ahead in the score and therefore wins the game for them since the away team won’t get another opportunity to score. I think this should cover it, but as always feel free to message me with any questions you have. Enjoy!!

When your alarm went off at 8:30 Sunday morning, it took every ounce of strength you had not to slap snooze. It wasn’t until after two in the morning that you’d finally gotten home, but you were so amped from the game and your night with Shawn that you weren’t asleep until nearly four. Despite every muscle in your body screaming at you lay back down, you forced yourself out of bed and into your bathroom.

The game wasn’t until one that afternoon, but you wanted to be there at least an hour early. Plus, you wanted as much time as possible to get ready. You hated the thought of getting all done up just to go to the ballpark, but you had no idea what you were in for with all the players’ wives and girlfriends; you wanted–needed–to fit in as much as possible.

You washed your face with cold water in an attempt to wake yourself up, but as you caught sight of the bags under your eyes in the mirror you knew it would take more than cold water to bring you fully back to life. You sighed and turned the faucet off, towel-drying your face before slinking into the kitchen to fire up your trusty Keurig for a cup of coffee. You propped your hands against the edge of the countertop, leaning your weight on them and closing your eyes as you breathed in the smell of coffee beginning to fill your kitchen. Your heart was already racing with anticipation of the day to come, so caffeine was probably the last thing you needed. But you were going to be anxious anyways; you didn’t need to be anxious and tired.

You took your mug and stirred in creamer before making your way back to your room, sitting on the edge of your bed and checking your phone for the first time that morning. You sipped your steaming coffee as you skimmed through the notifications, pausing when you noticed a text from Shawn that had come through a few minutes ago. You clicked open your messages, a little smile now painted on your face as you took another drink from your cup.

“Y/n,” Her mother called as she barged into her room. Y/n rolled her eyes and focused her attention back to her laptop while her mother lay some freshly washed clothes on her bed to be hung and put away.

“Karen invited us over for dinner tonight and it’s been way too long since we’ve seen them, so we’re going.” She continued. “And no, you can’t stay home. I’m sure Aaliyah misses you and you have to see Shawn again sometime.”

She winced as Shawn’s name was brought up, it was still a touchy topic for her.

Her family and the Mendes family have been friends for years. Y/n spent her whole childhood playing with Shawn and Aaliyah and they’ve been best friends for years. It wasn’t until grade 10 that Shawn and Y/n discovered they had feelings for one another and started dating, but once Shawn started blowing up he became distant and they broke up.

As much as she wished it was a civil, mutual breakup, it was complete opposite. Instead of just ending things with her, she had to find out he cheated on her with some model while he was away for work which resulted in their break up.

She hated to admit it, but it really did break her heart. She was down for months and just recently she’s been herself again, but seeing Shawn definitely isn’t going to help things.

She would like to think she’s over him, that she’s stronger than this and shouldn’t let a man affect her this much, but she doesn’t know what’s going to happen when she sees Shawn for the first time since the breakup.

“Don’t worry, I’m over it.” Y/n sighed, closing her laptop screen and moving to put away the clothes before her mother had a fit. “I’ll be fine, he’s just a boy.”

“A boy you cried about for a long time sweetheart.” Her mother said, uptight tone quickly turning into a caring one. “You don’t have to tell yourself you’re okay if you’re not, I remember how upset you were.”

“Well that was a long time ago.” She huffed. “I’m over it and I will be at dinner as if nothing ever happened.”

Her mother nodded as she exited the room, closing the door on her way out, leaving Y/n alone with her thoughts.

She hasn’t spoken to anyone in the Mendes family since the breakup but she was sure his parents wouldn’t act any different towards her since the whole thing wasn’t her fault, but would Aaliyah be upset? After everything happened with Shawn, she completely cut her off, ruining their close friendship.

6:00 rolled around faster than Y/n anticipated and before she knew it she was standing outside their house with a tray of her mothers cookies in hand. She was dreading this dinner, but she knew she had to put on a good front for a few hours and then she could safely go back into her room without anyone suspecting a thing.

“Susan!” Karen exclaimed as she opened the door, pulling her longtime friend into a hug. “It’s been too long!”

She welcomed the family inside before greeting the three and grabbing the tray of cookies from Y/n’s hands.

“Y/n, how are you hun?” She asked as she led everyone inside.

“I’m doing alright. I’ve got classes and work keeping me busy.” She stood awkwardly next to her mother, feeling out of place in a home she practically grew up in. She listened to the two mothers catch up as both Manny and her father stood on the patio outside. She could faintly hear the TV playing in the living room but she didn’t know if that was where she should go.

If things were normal, she would have already found Shawn and Aaliyah and would have been cuddled up against his side as the three watched some movie playing, but barely payed any attention to it.

“Y/n,” Karen snapped her out of her thoughts. “Aaliyah is in the living room, I’m sure she would love to see you.”

Just as she was about to politely decline, her mother sent her a look and she knew that’s where she was going.

Without a word, she found herself standing in front of the living room, debating if she should actually go in or not.

She wanted to see Aaliyah again, but she wasn’t ready to face Shawn.

Before she gave herself any time to think, she entered the living room, immediately getting the attention of Aaliyah, who was sitting on the couch looking bored out of her mind.

“Y/n!” She squealed, running to give her a hug. “Holy shit it’s been forever!”

“I know,” Y/n sighed, “I missed you.”

Out of the corner of her eye she could see Shawn staring at the two, and another girl curled into his side, looking a mix of confused and hurt.  

“What happened?” The young girl asked as she pulled away from their hug. “You completely cut me off one day and I never heard from you again.”

The girls took a seat on the couch, as far away from Shawn and his mystery girl, while Y/n explained herself.

“You know, just because things got messy with you and my brother doesn’t mean we had to stop talking.” She whispered, shooting daggers at her brother, the couple had lost interest in the two girls and went back to watching tv. “If it makes you feel better, we didn’t talk to him for a while, and none of us like Bella, she’s nothing like you.”

Y/n glanced at Shawn’s new girl, it was the girl he cheated on her with. After taking a good look at her, she realized that Bella was everything she wasn’t. Gorgeous, super skinny, long legs, small waist, she was probably a model.

“I’m sure she’s nice Li, give her a chance.” Y/n spoke, trying her best to put up a front for her friend.

“You know Aaliyah,” Shawn spoke up. “I would really appreciate if you didn’t talk about my girlfriend when she’s sitting right here.”

“Mind your own business.” Aaliyah snapped, “I wasn’t talking to you.”

“How about you mind your business and keep Bella’s name out of your mouth.”

Y/n looked between the two siblings in shock, she’s never heard them talk like this to each other. For as long as she’s known, they were best friends. Neither of them would have ever even thought of speaking like this. The breakup must have affected Aaliyah more than she thought.

“I can say whatever I want to say about whoever I want,” Aaliyah snapped, causing Y/n to raise her eyebrows in shock at the younger girl.

Her gaze moved to Bella, who seemed unfazed by this whole thing. Once she caught Y/n staring, she sent her the dirtiest look and Y/n looked away as if she wasn’t staring at all.

“So, Y/n, got any cute guys on your mind?” Aaliyah asked, changing the subject. Y/n wasn’t stupid though, she saw the look exchanged by the brother and sister duo, she knew Liyah was just asking to make the couple uncomfortable.

“Um, yeah,” She lied. Deciding to make it look like she didn’t have a care in the world when in reality, seeing Shawn with a new girl was doing some major damage to her mental health she’s spent so long trying to bring back up. “His name is Thomas, we’re in the same psych class.”

Shawn snapped his head towards the gossiping girls, not liking the fact that Y/n was talking about other guys in front of him. But who was he to say anything? He had a new girl on his hip that he didn’t even care about, but he knew Y/n would never take him back after what he did, so Bella was all he had.

“Is he cute?” The girl asked, suddenly perking up.

Y/n nodded, “So cute. I haven’t really spoken to him yet though, I sort of just admire him from afar. I’m too shy.”

The girls continued with their conversation about boys but the tension in the room was thick. Y/n and Shawn occasionally exchanged a few glances, but neither of them knew how much the other was suffering inside.

Neither of them wanted to be in this situation right now, but it was Shawn’s actions that made things end up this way.

I took some inspiration from this little Kate Upton/Justin Verlander moment (aka one of my favorite MLB couples) for a scene in this part and thought I may as well include the gif to match. I also proofread this while watching a hockey game, so please forgive any mistakes/typos! Previous parts can be found in my masterlist.

The first thing you noticed when you woke up was that you were hot. Burning up, actually, a likely combination of the sunlight streaming in through the window and the fact that your back was flush up against Shawn’s chest, which you had quickly learned was naturally quite warm. You groaned and ran a hand down your face, immediately tossing your white duvet cover off of you and sighing with relief when the air conditioning hit your bare skin. You flew up in search of the blue jersey Shawn had given you, smirking while you shrugged it over your shoulders and buttoned it up as the memory of last night came back to you.

You padded into your ensuite bathroom and sighed when you caught sight of your reflection–more specifically, the various purplish marks covering the expanse of your neck; you were almost afraid to see the additional damage that your jersey was surely hiding. You silently prayed your concealer would be strong enough to cover the marks as you raked your fingers through the ends of your hair in a desperate attempt to tame it, running a tired hand over your forehead when you decided that your current appearance was as good as it was going to get.

You started towards the kitchen to make some coffee, but as you approached your bedroom doorway you heard from behind you a raspy “Where are you going?”

You paused and turned around to where Shawn was still folded under the covers. You’d thought he was asleep, but upon second glance you saw his eyes were half opened and trained on you, a lazy smile crossing his mouth. “Was gonna make coffee,” you explained, unable to keep the corners of your lips from pulling up at the sight of a sleepy Shawn nestled into your bed.

“No,” he said matter-of-factly, rolling onto his back and folding his arms behind his head to prop himself up.

“Why?” you giggled, already beginning to gravitate back towards him.

“Because,” he hummed, a small grin still adorning his features.

You sighed and crawled back into bed, Shawn immediately pulling you to him so that you were chest to chest, his arms wrapped lazily around your back. He hummed in satisfaction, and you couldn’t help but let out a breathy laugh.

“What?” Shawn groaned, his voice still thick with sleepiness as his fingers trailed up and down the fabric of the jersey you had on.
