K-Pop Spotlight: A.C.E

This week, we’re highlighting five-member boy group A.C.E to celebrate the release of their new mini-album, SIREN:DAWN. We caught up with them about their new single, “Higher,” which was released on Wednesday, their inventive underwater photoshoot, and the first songs they remember loving. Check out our full interview below!

How does the sound and concept of your new mini-album, SIREN:DAWN, and single, “Higher,” differ from your previous comebacks?

JUN: The last album was a Korean goblin concept, and this time it is a mermaid concept. In this album, we tried our best to show you more sentimental and sad feelings as well as aesthetic aspects. You can find these things in the music video, but especially the lyrics.

In terms of visuals, there are touches of the mermaid in our outfits’ see-through material, plastic pants, and different accessories for each member. There’s a real difference of feelings from the traditional Korean visuals of the last album.

Your album photos are always so inventive. Can you tell us a little about shooting underwater? Do you have a favorite concept from your photoshoots?

KIM BYEONGKWAN: The underwater shooting was more difficult than I thought. I had more respect for Jun and Chan, who shot underwater in the last album; their photos were amazing. They were like my mentors for this underwater shooting. My favorite pictures are the ones I took on the water.

CHAN: Jun and I already had an experience from the last album. So, this time, we proceeded in a skillful and relaxed situation. I like the “MOON” concept photos: I could express the energy that I wanted to express in that concept, so I hope you look forward to it.

Outside of music, what are you most passionate about? Are there any hobbies you use to de-stress?

DONGHUN: Staying home alone and relaxing is my thing. Occasionally, I’ll write songs with lyrics about stress and worries.

WOW: I relieve my stress by browsing the Internet. I get a lot of inspiration from watching fashion-related videos.

What’s the first song you remember loving?

JUN: “A Song for Mama” by Boyz II Men.

I’ve always loved R&B songs. Among those R&B songs, this song touched me a lot when I came across it with lyrics that could show my love and respect for my mother. I used to sing it a lot, too.

DONGHUN: “Nocturn” by Lee Eun-mi (“녹턴” by 이은미).

The lyrics of the song and Lee Eun-mi’s emotions touched my heart and comforted me. I played this song whenever I was having a hard time.

WOW: “Timeless” by SG Wannabe.

This song introduced me to SG Wannabe, but it also became my go-to song.

KIM BYEONGKWAN: “Lovely Sweet Heart” by SeeYa (“사랑의 인사” by 씨야).

When I was really young, my friend recommended this song—I thought the atmosphere and lyrics were so beautiful!

CHAN: My father used to run a record store, so I’ve been listening to many songs since I was young. I don’t remember any particular first song, but the kind of music I listen to a lot these days is “Let’s Go Picnic” by George (죠지). This is my favorite kind of music genre, and the lyrics are so pretty.

Disclaimer: This song is really beautiful and meaningful and important and I did it zero justice with this translation. You could write a paragraph on every line of this song and still be left wanting. I wrote down the lyrics by ear so there are likely mistakes in both the Korean and English lyrics. Please just take this as a rough outline and not a full picture, and please look up the history of Arirang and what it means to get a better picture of the song.

── Right now, what are you into?

Ruki: Fountain pens. I bought mine a long time ago, but I wasn’t able to use it well and there were many times I stained my hands with the ink. I’m not using it recently, but I’m still holding onto it preciously right now.

── What in your fashion are you particular about lately?

Ruki: If I can, I’ll like it to be form-fitting. Clothes that are too large don’t really fit me well. Kou also told me it’s better this way, so for now, I’ll pick things that better fit me. ── What habits do you have that you’ll do without realising?

Ruki: I’m not sure if I’ll go so far to call it a habit, but I do twist pens in my hand often. Especially when something’s on my mind, and my hands have nothing to do.

── How do you spend your off-days? Ruki: I usually read or do housework. If I’m doing something in the house, my off-day will completely end instantly. I sometimes go out to do some shopping, but it’s really only when there’s something necessary to buy. ── What do you wear to sleep?

Ruki: I wear regular pajamas. Because I wear similar stuff all year round, there are times where the others get shocked when I put on a T-shirt once in a while. I don’t really have many pieces, and I tend to go for comfortable wear that makes me feel relaxed.

── What do you definitely do before sleeping?

Ruki: I do stretches and read. Afterwards, my eyes usually get tired, so I’ll prefer warmer surroundings. I understand it’s not something we need, but it makes me feel good… by the way, previously, Yuma got a shock when he walked in on me putting on a warm towel above my eyes. ── What is one part of your body that you like best? Ruki: I often get praised for the side of the eyes. But when I ask if it’s because (other people) like them, the replies are usually…lackluster. I don’t really take notice of it much though.

── What’s something you like in your room?

Ruki: I don’t dislike huge windows. If the room is a little small, huge windows make it feel more spacious. In order to control the light that pours in from outside, I go for darker coloured curtains as well.

── Tell us one memorable impression that you have of your brothers.

Ruki: Ah, there’s plenty but…if it’s something recent, it’s that all of us got together to clean the house. When Yuma was moving stuff, we found an old wooden chest, and everyone got noisy wondering if there’s treasure inside. When we opened it up with a key, it turned out to be empty, so all my younger brothers felt down. I was more bothered about since when did we have (that wooden chest)…but well, it doesn’t help anything to be overly bothered.

── What do you think of Karlheinz?

Ruki: I think he’s someone great. Plus, he took us all in, raised us, and we’re indebted to him. Such kindness can’t be easily repaid, can it? That’s why, if that person wishes for it, I shall- no, we, shall do anything.

── Where will you go if going on a date?

Ruki: I don’t like anywhere that’s too crowded. Places such as art museums or libraries are good. To admire paintings, read a book, then speak about our thoughts over a meal doesn’t sound too bad.

── What does a girl do that makes your heart skip a beat?

Ruki: Seeing the back of her form while she’s asleep makes me happy. Above anything else that she does, her being as vulnerable as such is somehow quite interesting. For her to show such a side before me, isn’t it fine to be taken by it?

── How does her blood taste?

Ruki: It’s a bit hard to put it into words…it’s not a persistent taste, and there isn’t a bitterness like when you suck from other people. When you mix the emotions in, the taste changes as well, and that makes it fun once again. It makes me want to keep her by my side often.

── Which part do you like to suck from best?

Ruki: I like taking her blood from her shoulder. It’s a thinner part of the human body, and it isn’t too thick, so you can get a good sound out of her. Since it’s also close to the ear, she can hear the sounds well and will often react to them. There’s no problem at all since we all don’t hate it there, right?

── What is her existence to you?

Ruki: I used to think she was just a livestock in the past… but, it’s all different now. Pulling myself away from the fact that she’s Eve, she’s special to me and is someone that I think of protecting. Of course, I’m not throwing away my role. To have such thoughts is probably unforgivable…but I’m not able to give it up now. That’s how important she is to me.

I, Sakiyama Tsubasa will be leaving Space Craft Entertainment as of May 10th 2020[1].

I am thankful to everyone who [gave me that] first step forward as a person in public, who taught me various things as a person, and to all of the staff that have supported me so far.

From now on I will continue to challenge myself with everything, since I intend to [make] much more diligent effort [with my work].

[1] As mentioned last night, Sakiyama Tsubasa decided to leave Space Craft Entertainment and continue his acting career as a freelancer. More information on the subject can be found: HERE

Tonight at around 9:10pm JST, Sakiyama Tsubasa and his official site have announced that as of May 10th 2020, Sakiyama Tsubasa has parted ways with Space Craft Entertainment. He will no longer be affiliated with this agency and he will continue working as a freelancer from here onward. 

A report from Sanspo stated the intentions behind him leaving the agency, saying that, “I thought that when I became 30 years old, I want to do something new.” So it can be concluded that Tsubasa and the agency have left on good terms. (Report Source: HERE)

With him no longer being affiliated with Space Craft Entertainment, there are a few changes that have happened or will be happening:

Sakiyama’s Official Site will no longer be accepting new members from May 31st at 11:59pm JST, as the site will then be closed and will stop providing information and other services on August 1st at midnight JST. The site can no longer be accessed after August 1st at midnight.

The wallpaper distribution (for paying members) will have the final wallpaper distributed on June 1st. After that, there will be no more new wallpapers. *NEW UPDATE*

The birthday mail delivery (email) will be delivered on July 1st until February 2021. Members will have until the end of June to register their birthday on the fansite in order to receive it.  *NEW UPDATE*

Space Craft Entertainment Online Shop have all of Sakiyama Tsubasa’s remaining official Goods on sale. They will stop selling the remaining available items from June 30th at 11:59pm JST. 

Sakiyama Tsubasa’s Avex official site will still be open and operating, as he is under their label for his music (as an artist) and have no affiliation with Space Craft Entertainment. 

Sakiyama Tsubasa’s official Twitter and Instagram appear that they will not be closing (as they normally would when parting ways), as changes have been made to their bio’s (including a gmail for work contact). So at this stage, they will remain the same. His Ameblo on the other hand, is unknown until said otherwise. 

I was a bit surprised by this news myself, but I will always follow and support Tsubasa no matter what path he takes. I hope things will work out for him with this path he’s decided to go in from here onward! ❤

The two had initially thought that the power of the incense burner would dissipate after two days. But on the third night, Wei Wu Xian woke up in Lan Wang Ji’s dream again.

This Lan Wang Ji is still a younger self, although he seems around the age when they fought the Xuan Wu at the bottom of its cave, around seventeen/eighteen. Handsome as always, already with the air of maturity, yet still retaining a bit of youthful countenance.

Wei Wu Xian hangs around outside the classroom for a bit, leaning on the support pillars, then hops lightly onto the eaves, and brings Chen Qing to his lips.

Inside the classroom, Lan Wang Ji shows a sliver of disquiet.

A disciple asks, “Sir, is there a problem?”

Lan Wang Ji replies, ”Who’s playing a flute?”

The disciples look at each other blankly.

Momentarily, someone ventures, “There is no flute, sir.”

At that, Lan Wang Ji’s expression wavers, and he takes up his sword and strides out the door; right at that moment, Wei Wu Xian keeps his flute, and leaps lightly over to another eave.

Lan Wang Ji, sensing movement, calls out in a low but commanding voice, “Who dares to trespass!”

Wei Wu Xian lets loose two clear whistle notes under his tongue, already thirty meters away, “It’s your spouse~!”

At the voice, Lan Wang Ji’s expression wavers, saying, uncertainly, “Wei Ying?”

Wei Wu Xian does not answer, and Lan Wang Ji pulls down Bi-Chen from his back to pursue. After a few flying leaps and bounds, Wei Wu Xian stops, perched on top of Cloud Recesses’ high walls; finding solid footing on a piece of tile, he straightens.

Lan Wang Ji stops ten meters away, Bi-Chen in hand, his forehead band, sleeves, and robes billowing harshly in the night wind, the overwhelming image of immortality.

Wei Wu Xian tucks his hands behind his back and grins. “Handsome face, impressive skills… Now, if only there I had an altar of that wonderful Emperor’s Smile, this would be perfect.”

Lan Wang Ji’s gaze is steady, after a moment, he says, “To come uninvited at nighttime, Wei Ying, what purpose do you have?”

Wei Wu Xian laughs. “Guess!”

“……”

Lan Wang Ji snaps, “Nonsense!”

Bi-Chen flashes forwards, and Wei Wu Xian evades effortlessly. Although a teenage Lan Wang Ji is highly skilled for his age group, he is no match nor threat for this Wei Wu Xian. A few parries and an opening, and Wei Wu Xian slips inside his guard to slap a seal on his chest. Lan Wang Ji seizes up, unable to move, and Wei Wu Xian tucks him into his arms, making a straight line towards the back of the Cloud Recesses mountain.

Wei Wu Xian finds a secluded and densely wooded area where Lan Wang Ji is set down. Leaning against a white stone, he asks, “What are you going to do?”

Wei Wu Xian pinches his cheeks, and in a serious tone he says, “Rape you.”

Lan Wang Ji can’t tell if he’s joking, and begins to pale. His says, low, “Wei Ying, you…don’t joke around.”

Wei Wu Xian grins. “You know what kind of person I am, I just like to joke around.” With that, he reaches a hand to beneath Lan Wang Ji’s numerous, solid layers of white robes, and tightens his grip around a notable area.

This touch is neither strong nor soft, showing a particular skill, and instantly Lan Wang Ji’s expression shifts into something peculiar. The corners of his lips spasms, and he bites his lips, finally reclaiming control of his expressions, forcing an air of calm.

But, having gotten away with that, Wei Wu Xian wants more, and in quick movements his robes was loosened and the inner layer discarded, and Wei Wu Xian pulls out the flushed and heavy cock, so different from Lan Wang Ji’s expression, and gives it a good, solid stroke. “Han-Guang-Jun, you really a truly gifted from a young age!” And he has the nerve to flick the head afterwards.
