First meal from our first turkey of the season! Leg quarters slow simmered in the crock pot with veggies, fresh herbs from our herb box covered in turkey broth made from the carcass paired with cranberry sauce and pepaw's home grown sweet corn! We will get 2 meals out of a part of the turkey that most people just leave in the field! And look how dark that meat is! One of the coolest things about this whole Rugged Meats journey is the people we have been blessed to meet. A little while back we got connected with a pretty awesome little dude named Trucker Dukes. We saw the pictures but never really made actual contact until the other night. After talking with Trucker's dad this story hit me harder than it ever had before. You can read their Facebook page for a more detailed description of their journey but in a nutshell, Trucker is a 3 year old little super hero son of a Maui firefighter with Neuroblastoma and he is battling for his life. He turns 3 today and is headed to NY for another surgery on April 13. Our son also just turned 3 and we have a picture exactly like this in my engine and I can't even fathom what the Dukes family is going through as they prepare for another surgery. As you can imagine, the costs for getting from Hawaii to NY for the treatments are not minimal and the last thing they need in addition to the emotional roller coaster is the additional financial burden all of this brings. So, we are asking 2 things of everyone who reads this. First, pray. That doesn't cost you anything and the Dukes family needs every single prayer possible lifted up for them as they face down cancer. Second, follow the link on their page and give! We have all been blessed FAR above what we deserve and I don't care who you are, you can squeeze or sacrifice somewhere in order to be a financial blessing to this family during a time of need that is far greater than any of us could ever imagine. One of the coolest things about the fire department is the brotherhood that exists and as you look through their pictures you can see that they have rallied around the Dukes family for a strong showing of support. This has been heavy on my heart since I first saw it and the need is greater now than ever so PLEASE share this around to as many people as you can to spread the word!
