When my grandparents immigrated from Trinidad to Brooklyn, my mother vividly remembers them discussing how Chase Bank wouldn’t give them a loan on the basis of their skin color. They bought the cheapest house they could find as soon as they saved up enough money. It was, for lack of better words, a dump. To this day, my grandma still struggles to pay her bills and her mortgage with her tiny retirement fund.

okay, here is a thing: some people that suffered from abuse can’t remember every detail about it and sometimes they will remember it gradually during their life. if they tell you different stories about the same thing, don’t just judge them. if they tell you they forgot about things, trust them. if they tell you they just remembered something about the abuse, trust them.

If someone remembered every detail about their abuse at all times, they’d be under a dangerous amount of stress. People would also judge them for always being negative.
