“I tried talking to her but she was being her usual smart ass self and wouldn’t tell me a damn thing.”

“I haven’t gotten far with her either. God, why didn’t she just stay dead?”

“I think I know why.” 

“It doesn’t take a genius.”

“I know–I ran into her but I don’t know how it’s possible.”

“My guess is she had a witch helping her on the other side. But then again, this town is full of surprises.”

“He–he killed Laura? What the hell?”

“Like I said, messed up. But Laura’s back. Somehow.”

“At least I’m not too afraid to tell the truth,” she replied defensively. “Can you say that about most of your friends?”

“No, because I have none.”

“Did you have some wild adventure of something?”

“Hm, not yet. But I’m willing to take part in one.”

“My older brother was good friends with Laura–I don’t know much about the others.”

“Well, dear old Uncle Peter was the one who killed Laura. Need I go any further?”

“When your split-ends qualify as a life-or-death situation, I will consider helping you.” 

“You’d make a great friend, you know that?” she asked sarcastically.

“You don’t have to look like a model every second of every day. It seems like a whole bunch of effort for lots of people who aren’t worth it.”

“And there’s plenty of people who are worth it.”

Veronika shrugged. “You haven’t told me anything I don’t already know. But anyway, why do you care so much? Do you have an interview to go to or something?”

“It’s daytime outside. Visible light? People can see me.”
