My favourite art podcasts
Sometimes people ask me if I listen to music, audiobooks or even watch films while working. Usually I don’t watch films because I want to give them my full attention, but I do listen to audiobooks (fiction and non-fiction) and of course I listen to music.
Mostly, though, I listen to podcasts. History, comics, videogames and art are my favourite topics - and I say ‘podcasts’ because of their presence on iTunes, but many are also on YouTube, if not only there.
So I thought to share my favourite podcasts/ shows here!
One Fantastic Week
A show co-hosted by Pete Mohrbacher and Sam Flegal, two of my favourite artists, on YouTube and also iTunes. They bring weekly interviews/ friendly and inspiring conversations with amazing artists. Sometimes I listen to certain episodes more than once because not only they are interesting, but also offer a lot of information for freelance artists like me.
Art Side of Life
It’s a daily podcast and I adore it! Hosted by Iva, the show brings interviews with artists from all over the world and the episodes focus on different topics, from the technical side of a job to more profound thoughts on artistic struggles and successes - first jobs, failures, advice and general growth of a creative person. It’s super inspiring!
Chiustream/ Schoolism live interviews
My favourite show in terms of guests, because Bobby Chiu, founder of Schoolism and Imaginism Studios, always invites my favourite artists (James Gurney, Nathan Fowkes, Mike Mignola, Kim Jung Gi, just to name a few). That I impatiently wait for Bobby to update the channel… is absolutely true.
On the YouTube channel you can find all the videos, Bobby’s streaming sessions and Schoolism interviews. If you want to watch only the interviews, you can find them here.
Art Cafe
It is one of the best art podcasts. Ever. Founded by Maciej Kuciara (concept artist, again, one of my favourite artists), the show offers so much inspiring and informative interviews with great artists from all over the world. It’s probably the first podcast I ever subscribed to (because I was interested in concept art and working in the industry at the time and conversations are mainly about these particular topics).
The Collective Podcast
Super amazing podcast created by Ash Thorp. Inspiring interviews not only with artists, but also photographers, directors, producers, musicians and other creative industry leaders. While the main topic of the show is art, the conversation touches many topics such as videogames, books, the future and where the hell the world is going… and my all-time favourite, films. Ash talks a lot about films and at times invites creative people to do entire commentary episodes on certain visual masterpieces (Alien, Akira…).
Level Up!
Not really a podcast, Level Up! is a YouTube channel (and Facebook group) created by Wojtek Fus and Darek Zabrocki that brings interviews with artists who mainly work as illustrators, concept artists and art directors. Unfortunately the updates aren’t very regular, but each session is so inspiring and informative!
I can’t express in words how much these podcasts help me every day, especially when I feel like giving up on art and just choose a job that doesn’t require creativity and an incredible amount of patience ❤
