I’ve always had an incredible interest in the villains, which are a lot more fun to play.

I’ve always felt like I belong there. Growing up [in L.A.] and having a family here was something that I, of course, adored because I was surrounded with that unit. But from the first time I went over there, I felt connected to the way things move, the pace, the ability to strike up a conversation with anybody. I know that people often say it’s hard to talk to people in New York. I think it’s harder sometimes in L.A. But I like the neighborhood vibe, I like getting on the train and going anywhere with that type of speed, having everything at my disposal. The culture, the pace, all of it. I like feeling like I’m in that concrete jungle.

London’s my favorite place on the planet and the reason for that is its fantastic diversity. I suppose I look at people and think about the journeys that their parents may have made to get them here. I think about the journey my grandparents made - my grandparents are immigrants from Spain and Holland, so it’s not quite the same, but I think about what pushed them out of their countries and how fortunate I am to grow up here and to not take that for granted.

I’d love to kind of go the Joseph Gordon-Levitt route, and do a lot of really good independent films that I love, and I’d love to get back to the theater in the next couple of years, if possible, just when we’re on a hiatus. Those are kind of the two things I want to check off my list next.

I just don’t believe that things are that simple in life. I think certain people are the way they are for certain reasons that we can’t necessarily judge without knowing. I feel like there are so many people I admire for so many reasons that I can’t look at one person’s life and say, “I want that life.” I want to make my own history. I look at anything in life like as long as you do what you believe in, then it’s going to work out. Because even if other people don’t like what you’re doing, you’re happy because you did what you believed in.

I was like ‘the audience is going to see it’s me,’ so I was determined to do as much of the action scenes as I could, to the point where I was a pain in the ass to them – but I didn’t care, because I can sit here and tell you that I’ve done 90 percent of those fight scenes. I was even on the motorcycle.

Trouble? No way. You’re only in trouble if you get caught.

I am interested in people who are on top and how they stay on top. In a vague way, it’s a bit like athletes and how they stay on top of their game. You know, I always root for the older athlete. I root for the second album. I root for solo careers after the rock star breaks the band apart. I’ve become more interested in second and third acts, and a lot less interested in that splashy debut. For me, the most interesting thing is longevity and sustaining a career, because that’s what’s truly difficult.
