ok so. i was looking through my victorian flower meanings book i have. and i found quite a lot of flowers that could work. so here's my list:

flowers doug could cough out (if you dont know hanahaki au, usually the flowers you cough out symbolize the relationship you have. in this case, it does that, but also the relationship as doug percieves it as, if that makes sense.):

-bluebell (represents humility and faith, i think this kinda represents parkzer in their relationship, and something doug admires about him)

-foxglove (represents secrets, obviously he's hiding hanahaki from parkzer)

-hyacinth ("please forgive me", doug feels as though he's going to ruin their friendship with his love)

-lvy (represents attachment, pretty self-explanatory)

-amaryllis (represents pride, he's proud to know parkzer and proud of parkzer)

-clematis (represents ingenuity, i think they both consider each other really intelligent)

-iris (represents wisdom and faith, see above(s).)

-pansy ("you occupy my thoughts", again self-explanatory)

-yarrow (cure for broken heart, doug blames himself for his feelings)

-apple blossom (represents preference, doug prefers being around parkzer)

-camellia ("longing for you")

-honeysuckle (devotion and affection, doug's devoted to parkzer and vice-versa, doug's also affectionate towards parkzer)

-monkshood (chivalry, idk i think they both would be very chivalrous)

-orchid (represents elegance and beauty, i feel like doug would find parkzer elegant)

-sweet pea ("thank you for a lovely time", maybe this starts appearing when hanahaki gets really extreme?)

-zinnia (everlasting friendship, doug wants the friendship to last so he's afraid to confess)

-forget-me-not

-gladiolus ("you pierce my heart", love hurts blah blah blah)

-hawthorn (means hope, doug hopes everything will be the same)

-marigold (grief, if you want to go down an angsty route)

-azalea (fragility, doug fears their friendship will break)

-daffodil (represents unrequited love, either actual or percieved by doug)

-snowdrop (consolation and hope, doug doesn't want to confess bc he fears the response)

-dahlia (means eternal love and commitment)

-myrtle (love)

-tulip ("I declare my love for you")

-rue (regret, maybe if doug wants to confess but doesnt?)

-rosemary (rememberance and wisdom, parkzer traits)

-magnolia (dignity, also parkzer trait)

flowers parkzer could cough out (Some of the flowers on this list are more about how parkzer feels about their relationship than only doug, also how he feels about confessing. idk i wrote this at midnight-):

-columbine (foolishness, but like in an affectionate way towards doug if that makes sense)

-olive (means peace, i feel like parkzer would be more accepting towards a relationship between them, esp since it seems like doug is more affectionate so he has more reason to believe its mutual)

-protea (transformation, the transformation of their relationship throughout the years)

-crocus (cleverness and youthful glee, represents doug)

-edelweiss (courage and daring, also doug)

-heather (represents luck and protection, he feels lucky to know doug)

-laurel (glory, victory, success)

-lily of the valley ("return to happiness", i'd imagine he notices doug's declining mood if they both get hanahaki at the same time)

-mistletoe ("surmounting difficulties", hanahaki isnt fun)

-oak (bravery, parkzer sees doug as brave)

-queen anne's lace (represents sanctuary, he feels safe with doug)

-iris (valor and faith, he has faith in doug)

-buttercup ("you are radiant with charm", represents doug)

-cornflower (hope in love, again i think parkzer would be more hopeful that it's mutual)

-dogwood ("our love will overcome")

-cattail (peace and prosperity)

-jasmine (cheerfulness, represents doug)

repeats (parkzer could also have these but im not rewriting the definitions):

there's probably more that could be mutual but i'm not writing them all down.

douglas wreden does his best to not let panic set in when he coughs up his first petal. it's small, thin, and yellow; doug vaguely remembers it being called "honeysuckle" from that one stream when he and twitch had ai write hanahaki fanfiction of gerald ford and napoleon bonaparte. a harsh inhale and a bloody cough cause him to wince, both at the irony of the memories—look who has hanahaki now, doug! he could imagine ai napoleon saying that, artifically inflated confidence and all—and at the pain of the cough. another petal came out, scattered hyacinth petals splattered with blood.

okay, well, that's not good. dougdoug was supposed to stream tonight, but that would most certainly not go well... the bald and blonde jokes were one thing but if someone were to joke about his unrequited love of... of... of? of who?

doug's phone rang suddenly, and he fumbled to fish it out of his pocket with his non blood soiled hand. 'parkzer' ...handsome, funny, always able to follow through with a good bit, always able to put up with doug even when others would say he's "too much". doug's face flushed and his chest tightened. of course, parkzer. doug loved parkzer. he had just loved the man for so long that sometimes he couldn't tell his platonic feelings from his romantic ones. that didn't explain why his body suddenly decided to find the difference, but that was an issue for future doug!

his phone rung again. ah, shit, he never picked up the phone... fuck, parkzer's gonna be pissed! a violent cough, an entire pastel pink azalea flower sat in his hand, matted with blood. doug answered the phone, not wanting to let parkzer wait any longer.

"hey, parkzer! what's up?" shit, his voice was more strained than he wanted it to be. "ah, douglas, i'm fine. are you alright? you usually barely take one ring to pick up, and i see that you're not streaming. though, if you're busy with other matters i can always call again later. this is most certainly not a dire matter." doug wanted to cry, parkzer knew him so well it hurt at times. "i'm—" he put the phone as far away from his face as he swiveled his head around to cough "—i'm fine! just a small cough, don't want you to catch it though the phone! but i'm here for you parkzer, is there some wacky plan you have? oh! are you finally going to shoot me? are we getting divorced?"

parkzer sighed, though clearly he was amused. "no, doug, i have no intention of shooting you, ever. also, we can't get divorced we're not married—" "yet!" a pause of silence as doug coughed a dahlia a little too painfully into his sink. "...yet. sure." parkzer's voice sounded almost embarrassed and doug wasn't entirely sure if he was hearing things from the blood loss. "ehem. anyway, i do not have any "wacky plan" either, douglas. i do, however, have a "small cough" just like you. i figured i would tell you immediately, as you have always been my close friend."

doug felt like his head was spinning a million times over. was parkzer also suffering from hanahaki? but he sounded just fine. could parkzer tell doug was suffering from hanahaki? "close friend". the words made doug's lashline hurt. that parkzer was so open with doug that he would immediately tell him... that doug didn't even think of doing the same... that doug was parkzer's "close friend"? god, historians will have a field day with these two.

a sudden abrupt cough came from the other end of the line followed by a short wince. "a handful of jasmine petals, apparently they represent cheerfulness, it reminds me of you. i get the feeling you're attempting to hide this sort of thing because you want to be strong, but there's truly no shame in it. with that being said, do you want me to come over, douglas? we can talk if you like, or we could play a game together, or we could even just sit near each other, whatever works best for you." then, as though he didn't already sound like a man doug would spend thousands on a ring for, "i also know a good tea that will help relieve the throat strain, along with some exercises and general tips for having an easier time with hanahaki."

doug couldn't take it anymore. between the cruel, harshness of the beautiful but bloodied flowers he threw up and the calm, gentleness of parkzer being so there for him... he cried. he couldn't handle it all. it was too much, too much, too much. he wanted parkzer, he wanted parkzer so fucking badly, it hurt. it hurt a lot.

"...douglas?" doug felt like the world around him was shrinking in on him, he felt like his ears were waxy cotton, he felt like mouth was full of coarse bricks. he wanted to respond, wanted to laugh it all away, he didn't want parkzer to worry. he wanted... he wanted parkzer. "i'll be over there in 5 minutes, doug. i'll stay on the line. please try to sit down somewhere, do not lie down, as that could impede your breathing or possibly cause excessive throat damage as a result of the hanahaki."
