she’s an upper ranking mednoble born into an attendant family kind of similar to lieseleta’s house type deal in ahrensbach. she’s the daughter of a first wife and had an older brother named diedrick who she looked up to a lot during her childhood who served as a namesworn retainer to georgine’s son wolfram (lowkey was also gay as hell for him but i’m not gonna unpack that rn). her family is in the process of trying to upgrade into archnobles through the three generations of increased mana rule and were using diedrick’s position as a namesworn retainer to get closer to the archducal family through georgine’s faction, but when wolfram died diedrick died alongside him and her family (who suspected that wolfram was murdered by another archducal family member) grew deeply distrustful of the archducal family and turned neutral instead. this also crushed lisbette’s original dream of serving as an archducal attendant, but she had already begun training to take the attendant course so she wasn’t able to switch into scholar like she wanted and just decided to aim to be a castle attendant rather than a retainer. stays the HELL away from detlinde. this is eventually overridden by aub roz requesting that she join letizia’s service after she loses all of her retainers in the battle of lanzenave, and while she’s deeply upset about being forced into the one thing she didn’t want to do, she eventually grows to accept it and cares for letizia like a younger sister, at least as much as she can with their status difference. she’s very much a background character— i wanted her to feasibly be someone i could slot into the story realistically without massively impacting the plot, so she just chills in the background with her husbandwife elwyn and watches the main cast get up to their antics :] her highbeast is a classic style helwolf, and she was born in spring (mana is teal colored). her flower hairpin was a gift from elwyn at their graduation and it’s modeled after violets for the lesbian symbolism lol… she’s secretly really interesting religious texts and is very excited that roz’s takeover means she’s able to research and read them without tarnishing her reputation :]
in relation to other characters/sona:
she’s one year above rozemyne in the royal academy/the same age as myne. she doesn’t interact with her until after she becomes aub alexandria and she/ferdinand order her to join letizia’s retainers.
she’s also three years older than elwyn, and they had to brute force their engagement to be accepted from lisbette’s parents because of this lmao…. she spends a very lonely three years away from her beloved after she graduates first…. she and elwyn meet in the royal academy library researching feybeasts and become best friends who decide to get married to keep lisbette’s parents from forcing her to marry some man to keep their family line going. (she is lesbian as hell. saw elwyn in all their androgynous glory and went hm. yeah i can work with this you’re coming with me)… she uses elwyn’s position as a librarian at the alexandria library to read more books than she can get at home, and she doesn’t tend to have many friends amongst alexandrian nobles. she does form a friendship kind of, again as much as status difference allows, with lieseleta and gretia through their status as archducal retainers though, and she has friends from the royal academy and elwyn. she typically keep to herself though, and while she’s overall a bright presence she tends to prefer reading quietly to socializing with others

It is the tragic reality that anyone who only ever watches the Ascendance of a bookworm anime will never be able to ship Ferdinand and Myne. That’s because as much as I love the anime, it really dumbs down Myne and constantly undermines how cunning and scheming she can truly be.
Like, I’m watching the new episodes and I noticed how when Sylvester and Freida are arguing over the “fluffy” bread, the anime frames Sylvester as the one who comes up with the idea of keeping the recipe from Freida to gain political advantage. Meanwhile Rozemyne hesitantly agrees, almost like she’s being pressured or even tricked by Sylvester.
Which LN!Rozemyne would never. She keeps the recipe from BOTH Sylvester and Freida because she wants to use it for herself. She lays down the plan of using it to cement her position in noble society - thing that she comes up with completely independently. It’s not even remotely Sylvester’s idea. In fact, Sylvester and Elvia only teach her that she must come up with new ‘trends’. And Rozemyne inmediatly launches to plan and do things on her own, which is very on brand.
And when the time comes to impress Sylvester, she plays him like a fiddle. Too well, even to Ferdinand’s standards. She designs the menu to ‘impress a child’ which works wonders for Sylvester.
It shows that Rozemyne isn’t just a kid. She’s capable of outsmarting even some extremely politically savvy people. Which the anime simply does not covey. In the anime, it really does feel like Rozemyne is this young naive girl who keeps getting pulled and pushed by people. LN!Rozemyne, on the other hand, seems more like someone who keeps getting a little bit too good at her job and accidentally causing problems because of it.
I know she’s like a horribly unreliable narrator, but LN!Rozemyne still was able to convey how scarily intelligent, calculating and cunning Rozemyne could truly be, when she wanted. In numerous occasions people go “thank god you only have books in your mind, if you had literally anything else, you would be a HUGE danger”. Her power was to only in her mana (in fact it wasn’t her power for the longest time) it was how fucking smart she is.
Which is why Ferdinand and Rozemyne work! They’re both extremely smart, eccentric people, who understand each other’s strange but practical approach. In the novel it truly does feel like the only person who truly understands what the other one is thinking - are each other. As much as Lutz was her arms and legs, Myne was a mystery to him. She could read him, but not really understand her train of thought. Ferdinand could - to a degree. And only because he’s Ferdinand. No other person in the entire series comes close to - not only comprehend the bizarre things she’s trying to come up with, but grasp their impact and act accordingly to be able to make it a reality and ensure no one dies in the process. That’s why in PART 3 they’re butting heads and trying to pull each other’s legs.
The anime though, it feels more like a strict guardian x ward relationship. Which is very sad.

ok. my updated thoughts (rant) on wilfried based on specifically h5y volume 2. spoilers below
listen. in the end of part 5, i truly was hopeful for wilfried. he annoyed me, but i still understood what made him that way, and i thought he was trying to improve himself. his relationship with at least rozemyne, if not all his siblings, was massively improved (i thought) by the dissolving of his engagement and his removal from his position as heir apparent. i really did think he could turn things around, and while he wasn’t…. the best… in h5y1, he wasn’t really any Worse than he was in p5. i had hope for him.
and then, h5y2 hit my library.
i dont think ive ever been more disappointed in him. not even during his p4/5 Oswald Spurred Bitching did i think he needed to be truly dealt with. but his actions in h5y2 are past the point of annoying and have fully crossed over dangerous territory. he got worse! he got a billion times worse! he’s somehow now acting with both the self importance of an heir and the carelessness of someone entirely uninvolved with politics. i think the imminent release from his status as an archduke candidate definitely contributed to this, but the fact remains that the public at large dont know about this and still consider him the next Aub Ehrenfest, and he will not, or can not, understand that his words still hold weight even if he doesn’t think they do. he’s immature to the point of bafflement. he’s acting like he’s still the 7 year old boy unaware he’s being insulted by the adults around him. how has he not matured at all past this point? his deceleration of support for ortwin was the final straw for me, alongside his behavior when charlotte made him apologize. even having it spelled out in the simplest terms possible, multiple times, isn’t enough for him to recognize he’s even done anything wrong. he single-handedly declared war on dunkelfelger, one of ehrenfest’s closest allies and the top ranked duchy, and then refused to even attempt to understand that he messed up. in her pov chapter charlotte hopes that she’s finally gotten through to him about what a massive blunder he’s made, exasperated, only to then be disproved when he whines and tugs at her like a child when she drags him over to apologize to hannelore the next day. it’s baffling! he is a danger to himself, those close to him, and his duchy at large.
i think the only course of action left for him, now without rozemyne to clean up all his messes, is to drag him back to ehrenfest mid fifth year and be demoted to an archnoble on the spot, rather than waiting for after his graduation. it will destroy what little is left of his reputation, but he’s done it to himself. he cannot be allowed to continue attending the academy as an archduke candidate, much less ehrenfest’s spokesperson, for the next year and a half. bare minimum, if they aren’t willing to do this, they need to forbid him from socializing altogether until his graduation. he’s proven time and time again he cannot be trusted with interduchy relations, and is, somehow, only getting worse. his immaturity was understandable, acceptable even, when he was young, but he’s nearly of age at this point. it’s no longer an option for him to be so massively unaware of what’s necessary from him at his status and level of influence. i could have forgiven him, albeit with some difficulty, if he had responded AT ALL favorably to charlotte’s lecture, but he only dug his heels in more. any understanding charlotte managed to drag out of him was undone by his behavior when she tried to make him apologize after. she’s exhausted from having to be his handler and have him not even willing to entertain her words or his own wrongdoing.
this has gone beyond the point of pitying him for being a child shaped by the adults around him. he hasn’t even seen veronica in what, 7 or 8 years at this point? the adults around him have been trying to properly raise him for just as, if not longer than veronica had him by now. yes, i still think he should be allowed to cherish his childhood memories with her, but the time where he could have reasonably allowed them to influence his behavior, at least without being self aware of it, has long since passed. he has failed on every front as a noble, a brother, a fiance, and an archduke candidate, and needs to be removed from these positions posthaste.
At the behest of @rozemynelovebot, I am subjecting y'all to this.
Now, I know a lot of people are Squicked by FerdiMyne. I get it! They're guardian and charge, teacher and student, there's a 14 year physical age gap (she's older than him but only on a literally outlandish technicality), adoptive-uncle and adoptive-niece.
But hear me out for a second.
Ferdinand is a bitch.
He's an asshole. He's a freak. He's kind of a loser. He's basically that self-entitled richass dipshit writing full novels in the back of English class and giving snobbish responses to everything, made absolutely worse by the fact that you know his stupid ass it going to one day write something that makes fuckoff amounts of money because his parents know people in the publishing industry. And the worst part is that it's actually really good because his parents also paid for him to get his PHD in literature and he is, in fact, smart. He's self-centered and doesn't really care about the emotional strain he puts on the people around him as long as his goals are achieved... until Myne essentially Steals His Soul and Commands Him To Live, but that's neither here nor there at the moment.
He's also dedicated to his cause, keeps Myne's secrets, breaks every rule he can to keep her alive (literally just to make his life easier at first, it wasn't a romantic grooming thing, if he wanted her as anything more than a mana battery he would have fixed her with that fake smile every day), and he is the only person who could possibly make and keep her legitimately happy.
Miya Kazuki understands that the best life partner you can have is the a partner who understands what makes you want to live, and makes sure you have it. We see this with a lot of couples. With Bridgette and Damuel, they want to live the lives they chose (or will get assassinated if they try to leave lol). Thus, ultimately, they cannot be a successful match. We see this with Adolphine getting herself out of dodge with Sigiswald because his treatment of her was without consideration.
Now, see, Ferdinand understands that Myne's sole goal in life appears to be reading, yes, but he is very aware that it is also tied to a great many other things.
He understands that her family being away from her makes her despair, so he gives her access to them in any way he can.
He understands that constantly behaving by Yurgenschmidt standards is not only impossible for her, but would make her die inside, so he sets up situations that excuse her behavior. (And sometimes situations that don't, but he caves to her and holds her anyways.)
He understands that books are not just the basis of her love for the books themselves; it's also knowledge and access to it. She craves a large breadth of knowledge that could never be compiled by a single person, and thus he embarks on a journey with her to establish public education.
Literally no man could do it like him.
(For a bit of Kenntrips propaganda, Kenny boy understands that Hannelore has no idea what she wants after Wilfried turns out to be a cunt nothingburger of a boy. So what does he do? He fucking asks her.)
I literally cannot—CANNOT—imagine anyone else understanding her to this degree, either due to situation or personality. So yeah. I think Ferdinand is Myne's ideal partner, and I think Kazuki-sensei knows what she's on about.
reading the p4 manga again and god. i really do think these pages are some of my favorite out of all the mangas. the book text was impactful enough but i just love how it’s paced and illustrated here….. the shock of sylvester kneeling…. his gratitude towards rozemyne….. so so so so so well done. i will always love this part
the pacing in particular here sticks with me. going from pages of tons of small, cluttered panels of her meeting with nobles after waking from her jurieve representing how overwhelmed she is from being thrown back into socializing cutting to the 1/3 page, almost blank image of sylvester kneeling before her. it cuts through the expected rush and noise of the pages in that one moment, like you’re being shocked alongside rozemyne as the background fades away. the next page lightening the mood, classic sylvester! giving the reader back what they expect from him! and then cutting straight to the beautiful emotional shot of him thanking her, showing the panel of him kneeling wasn’t just a fluke, he’s serious and he’s so, so glad she’s alright and so so so grateful for what she’s done for his children. i think of this scene often

my feelings about wilfried are so complicated. he’s just a child. he loves his family and the people close to him. he wants to protect his home. he thinks fondly of his most cherished childhood memories with his beloved kindly grandmother, where he was showered with love and sheltered from responsibility. he couldn’t possibly have understood what veronica was doing at such a young age, couldn’t have understood that he alone was favored while everyone else suffered endlessly under her reign. and yet he’s so INSUFFERABLE he’s naive he’s easily manipulated he’s stubborn and persistent in his misunderstandings, he’s optimistic very much to a fault. he turns on rozemyne so many times, refuses to acknowledge how charlotte is impacted by his actions and upbringing, refuses to acknowledge how EVERYONE was impacted by his upbringing. yes he’s allowed the privilege of cherished childhood memories, as is the right of any child, but he cannot separate those memories from the actual living harm still perpetuated by veronica’s legacy that very much lives through him and his retainers. he could have been so much more, could have avoided so much trouble and scorn and disdain if he had simply been raised by florencia instead of veronica and truly understood what was happening around him, but instead he turned into what he is
