FAQs

Why is Roy x Riza called Royai? Source

Roy/Roi = Roy's name, obviously. Roi is the direct furigana translation from the Japanese script, but on all official documents with his name in English, it says 'Roy' (even in Japan). The 'Ai' part comes from the English transliteration of how Riza's name is spelt in Japanese: "Hookuai". 'Ai' also means love in Japanese. So, to make a long story short, you could say it's shortened from 'Roi/Hookuai' or 'Roy/Hawkeye'. The 'Ai' part is a word pun because 'Ai' means love in Japanese, so you could say it means 'Roy/Hawkeye love'. ^^ It is also sometimes called Royeye in English.

June 1st is written 601, or better yet 61. Six in Japanese is roku, which is 六 in kanji - and ロク in katakana, which is the syllabary in which Roy and any other foreign name is written. One is ichi, 一 in kanji and イチ in katakana. Roy is ロイ.

Thus, 61 = ロク + イチ = ロイ

The rest is pretty simple. The “eye” in Hawkeye is アイ in Japanese, which is just “ai” - thus the name of the pairing RoyAi (or RoyEye) is ロイアイ.

We already have the “Roy” part with 61 and now we just need the “Ai” (Eye) part… so we add another 1, which is イチ (ichi). And the first letter of ichi “i” is read as “ai” in English (for the Japanese). So…

June 11th = 611 = ロク + イチ + イチ = RO + I + I (ai) = RoyAi    

Is Royai Canon?

Arakawa released an omake (extra comic) as a bookmark for FMA’s 20th anniversary exhibit in Tokyo, Japan (December 2021 - January 2021). 

This post  shares the bookmark itself (translated by @peartato​). 

Synopsis: The FMA characters are asked what or who they’re going to bring in a deserted island. Riza says Roy, while Roy says Riza (again, check the bookmark translated by pear you guys!)

So after discussing with another advanced Japanese speaker, I think it's reasonable to say Arakawa intentionally meant to say Roy and Riza have romantic feelings, which is why I felt comfortable writing "両想いな二人" as "they both love each other."

In the abandoned house, Riza sighs as she hears Roy’s voice as they argue who should take the stone. She opens the door and Glutonny swallows a portion of the house. 

Episode 24: Riza immediately asks where Mustang is. Awesome gun moment, Riza saving Mustang from Glutonny. 

She one-arm-carried Mustang. FIRST PHYSICAL TOUCH!!!

Riza called Mustang useless. Parental!Royai, Riza said they shouldn’t leave kids on the battlefield. 

Royai in Dr. Noxx’s room alone for a while. Roy probably told Hawkeye about Bradley being a Homunculi and his inability to reproduce

Roy told Dr. Knox the same thing, saying he wouldn’t be a good example as an adult if that happens. In the car, Roy asks her what’s funny. Riza tells him Ed would get angry if he finds out Roy treats him like a kid. Riza tells him she is amazed for being bold. They magically suddenly changed clothes once they entered Central. Roy tells her if anything happens, Riza should save herself. Riza says she doesn’t approve, and Roy calls her stubborn. “You should know that by now”. Riza waits all night.

Episode 25: Bradley says Riza will be Mustang’s weakness. Riza is still standing outside, with the sun up high. Team Mustang are reassigned, she is tasked to be Bradley’s assistant. Mustang’s face is devastated

Episode 37:  Snippet of Riza telling Ed he loves Winry. Roy buying a car full of flowers. Riza going to Fuhrer’s residence to deliver urgent documents to him [at night. I wonder if she does the same to Roy...]

Riza has now a scratch on her right cheek made by Pride. The same thing Roy had when Lust hit him [E19]

Episode 38: Roy offers Riza flowers, which she rejects since she says she doesn’t have a vase. 

“Why does he have such good timing when it comes to things like this?”

Episode 40:  Cafeteria. Riza is eating alone when Roy asks if the seat is free, to which Riza says yes.

Banter: “The Fuhrer does his job quickly, unlike someone here.”

Riza knocks her mug twice, to which Roy pays attention. She says Scar and Elric brothers are up north. And Roy taps his pen twice too. In the toilet, Roy figures out that all the first letters of the names are forming a message: SELIM BRADLEY IS HOMUNCULUS

Episode 42: Riza brewing tea for the Fuhrer

Bradley: However, I picked my bride myself. [Riza becomes startled, to which Bradley snickered to himself]

Episode 46: Promised day relay. Riza gives her regard to Roy. Mustang tells Havoc they’re both being watched. At the end, Riza prepares along with Breda and Fuery at the Warehouse. She tells they’ll have the Colonel take the blame after everything is over

Episode 48: Colonel orders them not to die. Roy tells them there’s no turning back and also after they complete the mission they will have to be by his side to rebuild the country after he becomes Führer.

They take Bradley’s wife as hostage. Father calls it “useless”. 

But it’s Roy’s way of telling Bradley It was just equivalent exchange. Riza is equivalent to Bradley’s wife

Episode 49: Hostaging Mrs. Bradley

Episode 50: Rumors fly, saying both the Flame Alchemist and the Hawk’s Eye are against them yet nobody died.

Roy tells his veteran allies that if things go bad, desert him and run. [Riza arrives] They agree and say “Roger!”. Roy gets shocked and says “Isn’t this the part where you’re supposed to say “I’ll follow you to the depths of hell?” [referring both to Riza and the veterans].

(I’ll post more about this I think this is the most subtlest royai moment there is)

Episode 52: Riza asks if they get in Central by force (like the Grand Theft Auto she pulled off in the manga)

Episode 53: The “this place brings back memories” banter 

Riza tells Roy he hates liquids as it makes him useless. Later she hits a bullet on the immortal legion, and Ed tells her it’s useless. She complains [how the tables have turned]

Roy used his Flame Alchemy to burn the immortal legion

Envy shows up, it’s him vs Roy and Riza. Then he retreats upon realizing Roy killed Lust. Roy follows him and tells Riza to wait for him. Where she follows them soon after

Episode 54: bless this full-on royai episode.

The Colonel always calls me Riza when we’re alone together [Envy is quick to believe this]

Episode 55: Roy: “It’s thanks to the Lieutenant that I was able to stop myself.” Riza thanks Scar for ending the chain of revenge

Episode 57: Mustang and Hawkeye are walking side by side now.

Back to back battling; “Colonel, your back is wide open.” “There’s someone I’ve entrusted my back to, so yeah”

Episode 58: Riza gets slashed by the throat. She tells them she won’t die, as she is under strict orders not to. Roy shouts Lieutenant with terror — how is it that they don’t say each other’s names

“A woman who’s precious to you is dying”
