We touch on so much more parts of the film that we missed on before, plus a bunch more!

As you might be aware I do my own blog over at http://sometimesvideogames.blogspot.co.uk/ ( @sometimesvideogames )but they are usually mini essays and sometimes I want to share my thoughts on something without going super in depth like I usually do. My Fortuna boys have kindly allowed me to facilitate that through their Tumblr so I’m gonna shit up their page for a little bit.

I just wanted to talk a little bit about a few things I enjoyed about the new Netflix original series ‘Stranger Things’. I thought this show was a breath of fresh air, Netflix are generally spot on with their original programming and this is no different. It was wonderful to see them pick up something of this genre and provide us with this little love letter to 80s television,cinema and music.

The Tangerine Dream style original soundtrack was amazing and really fit the mysterious and at times creepy tone of the show. I think the soundtrack in general is one of the best parts of the show really, it’s no secret I am a big fan of music from the 80’s such as Joy Division but I felt every song used was perfect. Particularly Elegia by New Order which many are familiar with from being used in Metal Gear Solid Vs trailer, it’s such a dark and almost mystical song that just makes me imagine being in a dismal world that it really fit the scene it was used in.

I have never seen The Goonies or The Break Fast Club but have read The Body (the Stand By Me novel) and I can draw a lot of parallels from it with this show in the sense of youthful adventure and self-discovery, it certainly hits the right notes in that respect and also has some wonderful nods to films like Alien while not relying too heavily on nods and similar themes in order to tell their own story.

I love Twin Peaks and in a lot of ways it hit the same notes as that show for me, while not being totally bizarre it had the same sort of setting and the right amount of creepy for me to tide me over until Twin Peaks returns shortly after its mammoth break!. I have heard a lot of people say this show is a lot like John Carpenter movies of which I’ve not really seen any but if that is the cast I’m all for watching some so please make me some recommendations

Winona Ryder was definitely the biggest name in the show and while she did a fantastic job, at first I thought she was not particularly utilised well. Yet as the show progressed and we saw what many on the outside would consider a descent into madness from sleep deprivation and the loss of her son she portrayed a mother going through these things really well, this emotional desperation really hit me. I’m not great with stuff involving animals or kids but some scenes with her losing it fucking got to me, any character or scene that can make you feel like that is 10/10 to me.

The character of El was perhaps the best acted overall, she barely had any lines however the way she acted by just her looks or actions really stood out to me especially for a child actor who has barely been in anything at this point, I certainly believe Millie Bobby Brown who plays her is one to watch and hope she gets the chance to shine in other genres soon!

I will say the Monster design wasn’t really anything special in the end, I liked that they constantly keep it obscured as it makes it a lot creepier and almost like the Regenerators in Resident Evil 4 but in the last episode you see the whole thing and to be honest it just looked like something from The Last Of Us but wank. The CGI  used on it was nothing special but I don’t really expect it to be on a TV show  I suppose even if it is a Netflix Original Series.

So yeah overall I loved the show, I’m excited for season 2 especially since it will be a direct sequel as there are a few loose ends that need to be tied up. I really want there to be more shows like this in the future!
