And now, a segment I like to call âOver Analyzing a Pixar Movieâ
I was thinking about the one scene towards the end of Coco, where everyoneâs backstage; Ernesto has Miguel by the hoodie, and the Riveras are backing him towards the edge.
During this scene, HĂ©ctor has a Final Death (Iâm gonna call them âspasmsâ) spasm and knocks over a microphone stand
If we go back a couple of shots, we get an idea of where everything is in this scene, including where that microphone was
So, we can assume that this is where HĂ©ctor collapsed, and thatâs how far away he was from the ledge
Hereâs the last time we see him after Miguel is thrown off
And hereâs where we see him again
But wait, howâd he get so close to the edge?
Hereâs where I rip your heart out
I think that between those two shots of him, one of two things mustâve happened.
1. he mustered enough of his remaining strength to get to the edge, either by crawling or by fighting to stand up. Maybe the fear of Miguel being hurt or killed was enough for him to gather the strength he needed to get over there.
Or 2. TĂa Victoria picked him up and brought him close enough to the edge.
When Miguelâs thrown, everyone rushes to the edge, everyone except one
TĂa Victoria isnât there
Maybe Victoria, knowing everyone was rushing to Miguel, stayed by HĂ©ctor, and helped him over.
I donât think itâs that far of a stretch, HĂ©ctorâs her grandfather. And sure, sheâs been taught to hate this man for the entirety of her exsistance, but I think by this point MamĂĄ Imelda has made it clear she no longer hates him for leaving. They watched Imelda perform with HĂ©ctor, unofficially lift the music ban (changing her final condition from ânever play music againâ to ânever forget how much your family loves youâ) and she was the first to rush to HĂ©ctorâs side when he had that spasm. So I think maybe Victoria couldâve been more forgiving toward HĂ©ctor as well.
Or maybe it was an error on the animatorâs part and Iâm just trying to find more reasons to cry over this movie. đ
