I really do enjoy difficult/abusive parent child relationships like clay and orel's. I enjoy it even more when the parent does love their child, because it's true, many abusive parents still love their children. But clay doesn't know how to show love outside aggression and maybe a few superficial words. Because that's how both Angela and Arthur worked, at least from my point of view, Angela seemed extremely superficial with her loving. She never went deep, even if her emotions were. But perhaps I'm wrong!
I don't have the vocabulary to explain how I perceive clay's feelings on the matter, it's almost feral. Emotionally, he didn't develop like everyone else. It's fun having to figure out a way to explain it.
