She holds that knowledge close to her chest, since during evenings when she’s here, lying next to Seimei, that burden is always just a little lighter. On a normal night, she’d have long lost consciousness.
Between frits of sleep, the third path between slumber, she wonders how he managed to lighten this load too, alongside all the others. Buried between sheets and his possessive fingers trapping her in place, Isuzu absentmindedly traces circles against his skin that gradually grow in size.
What a comfortable prison, she marvels.
Isuzu thinks about shifting out of his reach and fulfilling her usual motions - fish out a cheap cigarette, casters, the ones that smell of Shiori - sit out on the balcony and watch the sun rise.
But he’s so selfish. As if somehow reading her semi-conscious mind, he holds her closer instead, until her face is pressed right against his chest.
He breathes. Heavy. Slow. Alive. His heart follows - strong, and proud.
As if a warming lullaby by a voice she does not remember, Isuzu simply sighs into his touch, and drifts back into sleep.

Untangling from Haru in the mornings has become, at some point, a constant in his morning routine. Neither of them were morning people, but the last time he woke her up “for no reason” he was apologising into the following week.
Trying not to wake her on weekends then, meant playing a treacherous game of limbo. He wonders if it’s deliberate on her part, sometimes, blinking away sleep as he tries to gently peel her fingers off his torso for a second time.
She groans a little in response, digging her forehead into his side. She breathes evenly, heavily. He considers for a long, hard, tempting moment to just - forget all this song and dance for the day and just wake her up - but he remembers, what day it is, and he gives in, again.
He sighs audibly, shaking his head.
Eventually, he finds some success in detaching from her limbs. Arty rides his fingers through his hair, pushing back a bedhead, standing by their bed, eyes still bleary.
Haru sleeps soundly, still, none the wiser, his t-shirt exposing much of her collarbones. He reaches over to pinch her nose. Smiles slightly.
When Haru wakes up, it’s not really because there’s a strong ray of sunshine aggressively beaming at her face, or that she’s disturbed by the music playing in the kitchen.
There’s too much space. She wakes up to the ceiling, and sits up almost immediately, reaching for her phone by the beside, ignoring her glasses that falls from her side table unceremoniously.
11:10. She breathes easy - it’s not 4pm, or 2pm, or even 1pm. For a Sunday, it seems like a win.
Haru slips out of bed with a start - getting changed doesn’t even cross her mind when she can smell breakfast. Eyes widening, she walks barefoot to see if she can catch him in the act.
//
Haru definitely enjoys bothering him too much, Arty thinks, as he pours pancake batter into the heart-shaped mould with a ladle. None of it even spills, which is an achievement, he thinks, since her arms are wrapped around his waist firmly, head nosily watching his movements with great interest.
“Go wait on the sofa.” He chides softly. That predictably doesn’t work.
He instead points with his chin instead towards the two cups of black coffee sitting by the sofa. “There’s coffee.” Her grip loosens immediately, which elicits a snort.
Her “Thank you~” comes out sweet. Sing-song. He chuckles in response, dusting sugar over the finished pancakes.
“I love you,” though, that comes out after almost makes him drop the canned cream on his toes. Almost.
When he turns to look back at her, she’s just quickly sipping from her mug like the universe never saw any interruption in its gravity, at all.
//
Haru says she’d be happy to let him pick whatever movie he wanted to watch, she said, but she still ends up scrutinizing every one of his picks until she ends up approving some lesser known Ghibli film he’d never even heard of before.
Whatever, it didn’t matter in the end. She seems more interested in cuddling, anyway. Her lashes flutter behind the glasses perched on her nose. Gaze distant. Arty very smoothly forgets about his portion of pancakes, left unattended on the coffee table.
“The pancakes are cute.” Haru cuts in like always, and comments in between mouthfuls. She buzzes and hums under her breath, clearly amused. Her fork scraps the plate for cream. “Didn’t realise you even had a bone for romance.” Haru shrinks into a staccato burst of laughter.
Arty smiles. “It’s not so bad every now and again.” He says, planting a kiss on her temple.
//
On her lips, the pancakes are sweet and soft. He smiles into further kisses, and allows himself to wander into elated heights... and pixelated clouds... and wedding bells…

the extraordinary talents all went to her brothers, as both of their parents were magical, which resulted in a painful inferiority complex
If thunderclouds could roil in reflection of bad moods, a generous, ancient mass would have been positively writhing over Arty’s head right then. Not even the pinch of satisfaction at the Japanese students' open-mouthed reactions to their imposing arrival from the sea could placate him. It was the same, shot-through look of awe and murmured fervour as the skeletal mast first broke the surface—like a nightmare vision coming to life—and he merely crossed his arms and watched the volcanic island unfold through a porthole.
Baba Ana had thought the idea of an exchange programme charming, but the appeal was certainly lost on her stoic, homebody of a grandson.
To hell with it! the boy had thought sourly. Yet his opposition was futile—what Baba wanted, Baba usually got. Baba, who could never seem to muster a raised voice or direct order at him, had an impossible knack for the impossible. Arty had been deposited on the Spanish galleon bound for the foreign magic school in a thrice. No wheedles. No last-minute negotiations. No Alexei—the wizard was more spectral retribution hovering at his shoulder than flesh and blood, sometimes.
As the ship ground to a tell-tale halt with a low, carrying moan, its inhabitants began to move. Slowly at first, then gaining traction as the finality of their arrival began to set in. Subtle as ink gliding over black canvas, they disembarked into a full-fledged deluge of sunshine, the green of the island at complete odds with the furs thrown over their shoulders. Arty tossed his ivory head, mismatched eyes sliding across the waiting Mahoutokoro delegation with faint disinterest. They were all so… short. A few were jarring explosions of colour against plain uniforms. Like rows of painted matryoshka dolls. Beside him, Misha swung his elbow at his ribs with a knowing snicker. A brief bout of giggles swept their surrounding schoolmates. His amusement was a flicker of lightning on a horizon before his face flatlined back into placid neutrality.
Not for the first time, there was distinct sense of loss in his chest—the sense one gets from having glimpsed the snitch before it vanishes into thin air. He was a fish out of water, a dragon in a trophy room, an ill-at-ease figure with too-pale hands and horrifying eyes who hung as close to the back as he dared, inspecting his sleeve, without having to overhear pleasantries being exchanged by each of the schools’ representatives.
It was a break in discipline on Arty’s part (or perhaps a well-timed stroke of fate), but the moment he lifted his gaze from something that wasn’t the ground was when he met the bold stare of a girl opposite in a very flowery garment and blue-black hair. Of its accord, his lips curved into a mirthless (but admittedly sultry) smirk.
So this is Mahoutokoro.
He worked his tongue thoughtfully into the inside of his cheek and wondered what it’d cost him to disappear.
Students of Durmstrang weren’t allowed to divulge school secrets, and so that was where his introduction came to an end. Mildly curiously, he considered Chiharu and the flowers in her hair, baring unfurled throats in silent song to the sky. Pretty, crossed his mind, though he was loathe to admit. Mahoutokoro boasted a beauty that wasn’t frigid or knife-like like in the far North.
"Romanov— san." The rules of his language clashes audiably with the rules of hers, and Haru presses her lips into a thin line. "You prefer— Arti, yes?" Her eyes search for an answer, somewhat comfortable now that she felt seen by him.
"I hope you enjoy your stay at Mahoutokoro." She tips her head in a slight nod. "We hope you—" Catching herself in a near loop, Haru stops in mid-sentence. "Take care."
The golden bell perched at the top of the castle tower rings, signalling time for lunch. The other students slowly mill inside, with the Drumstrang students dutifully following. Haru's eyes follow along.
"It's lunchtime." Is the only thing she says by way of explanation.

He worked his tongue thoughtfully into the inside of his cheek and wondered what it’d cost him to disappear.
Pressure clammers in her chest, pulsating, this time, an unfamiliar rhythm. Her hands collect, press onto her obi, and bows courteously, attempting to hide her open stare she knows won’t leave his mind.
His smile… unnerves her. She wears her inexperience with shame. All this curiosity, Haru, just for a man that looks like yokai?
The sakura imprinted on her sleeves swayed on their own accord, enclosed in a never-ending Spring, canvased on fine black silk. The blossoms adorned in her hair yawn, opening brightly, peeking into his line of sight.
“Welcome to Mahoutokoro.” She opens her mouth first, but her fellow heads of house, standing stiffly behind her, join in a chorus of a welcome in their native tongue. The moment lingers artificially in the air; the trees beyond the castle walls join in, the very breezes surrounding them appearing to weigh down the greeting.
The very next moment, she stands alone. The students of Mahoutokoro are all conversing with their new peers in the courtyard. At least until the next schedule.
She presses her lips together, trying to contain all the unease leaving her mind. “Good… day.” She starts in clumsy English. Hold a hand out. “I am… a house leader for Shunrai. Chiharu. Fujiwara.” She nods stiffly, his cue to respond.
Searching for his eyes again, hers pull themselves up. Hair like snow. Her lips part, as if trying to say something. Her hand drops, sudden. Forgotten.
Maybe it was worth trying to cram some modern Russian, after all.

Up the blocked off stairs by the hidden corridor behind the third year classrooms are a cluster of abandoned classrooms, rows of forgotten lockers and emptied out rooms. Dust mites weakly sway under thin rays of sun in the corridor, peeking through worn blinds.
Zeke rolls them up and forces open a grimy window. He stops, for a moment, staring at photo-perfect clouds and the nothingness in between, but his gaze eventually sways down into the small courtyard facing his building, stopping at the figure of a boy falling asleep under the great oak.
Which was quite a feat, considering September had long come and gone, the days now shorter and much more biting. Zeke forgets about the grime etched on his skin for a moment and openly stares. A gust of wind rudely rushes through the window and swallows him whole, and he sniffles. A group of tall, stocky boys trample on his pleasure, waking the boy up and making him follow them, all sheepish and hunched.
He scrunches his nose and stares at the loud, grey streaks of dust on his palms. Deciding to leave the window open to let in some fresh air, he reaches for the handle to the first door behind him.
>>
Before long, Zeke makes the old chemistry lab his own little personal hideout with just a couple of old cushions and blankets. It’s modest, but he thinks of it as his home away from home. He migrates an ample stash of library books to one corner, and he always has a cupboard of easy snacks and ramen on hand. He was content, humming away to a song he’d long forgotten the lyrics to, just to have his little corner of the world to himself.
With an emphasis on the was.
Zeke wordlessly continues to wrap the bandage tightly around Cain’s palm. A small first aid kit is skewed open, and Zeke has enough experience dealing with his younger siblings’ various falls and tumbles to know what he’s doing. Cain was better off actually going to the school nurse, but he set off those dumb puppy eyes and if he so desperately wanted to settle for mediocre medical attention, Zeke thought, then who was he to stop him?
This is not the closest they’ve ever been together, he thinks with a strained breath. Zeke wouldn’t forget those long, hazy, nights of youthful hedonism even if he tried, but the air feels heavy, somehow, and Zeke doesn’t like it.
“Hey, uh- I think-” The other boy tries to interject, but Zeke has already finished the unnecessary layer of bandage. He laughs nervously, prying his hand away from him to prevent more damage, but in the end, it does nothing to dispell the tense atmosphere in the air.
Zeke doesn’t acknowledge the arm reaching over to raise his chin until its too late, and Cain already has his grubby hands on his face. Zeke can’t help but squirm.
Cain evidently doesn’t seem to mind, because this unruly hand of his is already combing through his hair, ruffling it in a way even his own parents have never done to him before.
Just as Zeke is about to bite out a strongly worded protest, Cain somehow beats the words out of him.
“Thank you. You’re really good at this.”
And he smiles the saddest smile he’d ever seen in all sixteen years of his life. Something, something at the pit of his gut twists like a towel being wrung out of water. He’d never thought of the action as violent until now until he shrinks back in pain he knows is imaginary, but is all the more painful anyway.
<<
Zeke isn’t known to shy away from matters of the heart, but he sure as hell doesn’t choose talk about it. The other students do that instead, behind every curious stare behind a computer screen in IT lab, or the unsubtle glares he’d get in the lunch queue, or the baited whispers from the table behind him in class. He fucks old men for money, some would say. Others would claim he stole so-and-so’s boyfriend and turned him to the taste of cock. It wouldn’t help that Zeke never confirmed nor denied the salacious stories, without so much as a crack in his facade.
But then he’d never been interested in people. He can see those things, he can hear those things, but he lets them wash over him like a strong tide and forgets about it after a hot shower.
But Cain Orazbeck, third-year ex-captain of the football team, is not one of those things. As much as Zeke had hoped he was. And he was beginning to realise he wasn’t just another person, either, much to Zeke’s chagrin.
It had been about three weeks since Cain spotted him watching while he got beat up behind the sports grounds, and he hasn’t stopped moping about, taking up space, visibly polluting the air with depression, since.
He seems to enter Zeke’s vision without much effort whatsoever. His hair will look a little wild and unruly on the basketball court during his gym class, right in Zeke’s lazy line of sight as he stares outside the window during class. He will be a little hunched, shuffling not far in front in the lunch queue. He’ll leave school a good fifteen minutes after the crowd has dispersed and would spend an extra five minutes staring at the sky by the entrance.
They had somehow tacitly agreed that they wouldn’t talk about the evenings gone, where Cain somehow, always, finds him in the crowd and their bodies end up so, so close together and he somehow lets Cain kiss him like he’s trying to breathe air and Zeke somehow, always feels like he’s about to drown and somehow he’s shaken to his bones and he wants out. And he leaves. (With longs streaks of heat from where he’s been touched; he wants to forget.)
He thinks about his sad smiles and wonders what he’d look like in tears. The curiosity helps quash down the rising heat in his guts.
>>
It rains heavily one April morning. He wakes up fifteen minutes before his alarm because the rain won’t shut up and one of his little brothers has managed to slip into his bed without knowing, and was now kicking him for some reason. He groans, grits his teeth, and jumps out of bed, poised and ready to throw his brother out of the window.
The air is soaking with moisture and Zeke feels a temper rise. He’s had to keep himself to the very edge of the insides of the bus shelter just so the passing cars wouldn’t soak his shoes in rainwater. He’d forgotten his literature assignment at home. He was forced to knock back his morning coffee in one shot just to make it to the bus stop.
It rains so hard that with every passing second Zeke is increasingly more and more reluctant to go to school. Lost in a bunch of hypothetical scenarios and brief sparks of fondness from recalling last night’s documentary, Zeke doesn’t notice his bus rush by or the other bus that stops and lets off a passenger that doesn’t leave right away.
“You’re not going to school today, then?”
Zeke saves himself the effort of looking up and instead looks at his wristwatch - a rare hand-me-down from his father, who claims it a family heirloom.
It’s 9:15. Even if he gets on the next bus, he’ll be an hour late, traffic depending.
(His mother tells him his father won the watch in a poker game twenty years ago, while drunk. What Zeke takes from the revelation is that origin stories aren’t all as they’re cracked up to be.)
He meets Cain’s eyes, then. He wonders what expression he’s wearing.
“I’m guessing you aren’t, either.”
>>
Cain’s place is twenty minutes on a bus line he’d never taken before going in the opposite direction. Zeke watches his familiar scenery sink and morphs under the rain and smog-like clouds. Cain doesn’t say another word throughout the journey. He fiddles with the shirt sleeve peeking out of his blazer jacket.
His place is a small, nondescript one-bedroom apartment in a nondescript neighbourhood that he had to walk five minutes to get to, under a nondescript sky.
No sign of parents, siblings, or anyone else. But Zeke doesn’t ask questions.
“Why don’t you take a shower?” was the first thing Cain had said in nearly half an hour, and while he takes it half expecting it to be an invitation for something more - to which Zeke had already decided he wouldn’t mind - he finds that Cain makes no effort to touch him other than making him sit and forcibly blow-drying his hair out of the blue.
Zeke finds himself oddly enjoying being momentarily doted on - and lets himself sit there and stare at the slightly oversized shirt and jogging bottom set Cain had loaned him. The shirt still smells like lavender. His breath hitches.
They end up crawling under piles of blankets - “I’d rather not pay so much for heating,” Cain had explained - and again, Cain made no active effort to touch him. Instead, they spend ten minutes scrolling on Cain’s laptop to find something to watch.
By this time, Zeke felt so comfortable his brain was about to log out. “I wanna watch some true crime.”
“Sure.”
Cain pulls the blankets in closer. He props the laptop up with his knees. By the middle of the second episode, Zeke is asleep, breathing softly by Cain’s cheeks. Arms snaked around his torso.
Cain gulps, but he can’t peel his eyes away. He sets his laptop aside and tries to even his breathing, before eventually falling asleep by Zeke’s side.
//
It takes him until June to start regaining a semblance of his usual self back again, but Zeke finds that he didn’t mind the wait, in the end.
Cain found a casual football club outside of school to play, as well as a new group of friends that liked to take the piss but would also see him for who he was.
Somehow, everything worked out just fine.
Cain had all the windows open in their little corner of the world, eager to beat the summer heat. Barely a breeze would ever slither through.
Zeke has his head in a maths textbook and a hand on a worksheet.
Cain sits down in front of him and reaches for his chin. Zeke doesn’t need to look up to intercept and grab his hand. Eventually, fingers lace. Zeke is the one that pulls him in. So close their noses touch.
“Don’t chicken out.” He whispers. His voice wavers.
Cain’s cock bumps against the back of his throat. He’s practiced enough that he easily ignores the tickle of discomfort, only hollowing his cheeks and sucking harder. One hand slips down from Cain’s thigh to palm at his own erection.
Hearing and tasting Cain like this, inarticulate and utterly undone, is exhilarating, verging on addictive — more than booze, nicotine, stimulating potion or spell. His scalp tingles from the rough tugging, but the pain’s a welcome counterweight. Grounding. Visceral.
Zeke pulls off with a wet pop, glancing up at Cain’s butchered words. “Talented? Generous?” he supplies helpfully, lips moving against heated skin. “I know.” And takes Cain into his mouth again.
He arches in, closer. Closer. He reaches, holding Zeke’s head in place when he looks up, cradling it between his fingers. He leans in by his ear, voice hot, raspy, desperate - clawing at his neck -
“You’re soo good baby, soo good- I need you so bad right now, L-let me f-fuck you ‘til you’re screaming, b-babe I’m-”
His bottom lip wobbles, voice strained. “I’m gonna- Ah-”
He was a painter, liked oils on canvas and dreamt of going to Europe. Yuhua had been there many times - Barcelona, Madrid, Rome, Berlin, Venice, Paris, Prague – and the estate hangs only ink brush strokes of ancient Chinese artwork, of water lilies and goldfish.
He liked to kiss her on the forehead, hands, fingers, right in the sweet spot of her collarbone. He was shy about sex.
When she falls asleep on his lap while he reads Sartre, she wakes up with daisies in her hair and a pillow, and the dark, starless sky.
They fall. Wilted, dried, and dead.
She dumps him the next day.
She decides soft boys are not for her.
She loses her virginity to a boy who doesn’t hide his fascination, and repulsion.
He gives her a hundred white roses on the first date and tells her she’s a yaoguai, out to bewitch men and send them to their deaths. (Like those sirens from Greek mythology, Yuhua thinks fondly.)
And he says he doesn’t mind that, as if he’s tougher than the rest, as if he’s taking on the one-eyed demon to save the village and be the hero.
But Yuhua didn’t mind, much less care.
He was tough, uncompromising, and he made her scream.
He was without a tinge of softness, and it made her sick to the stomach.
But when Gege comes back, summons her to his study, and tells her about the news of his 'accident', she scoffs.
In the end, he wasn’t tough enough.
-
She dates a fuerdai out of curiosity, but that flame burned out much faster than the others.
He buys her a car when she doesn’t have anywhere to go, he buys her a house when she already has her room, he buys her a field of sunflowers when she already has Yuzhu.
He didn’t know her at all – and Yuhua found that she liked it.
“You demon bitch, you were just playing me all along, weren’t you?”
Yuhua scoffs. And another one bites the dust.
-
She thinks that seducing Gege’s girlfriend was probably the last straw for him, probably what got her into this whole mess in the first place.
But she doesn’t regret it, not for a damned moment.
Gege’s girlfriend was ambitious, she thinks, recounting fondly of her love of BDSM and the plethora of sex toys in her collection. This girlfriend of his put all of her past encounters with men to shame. A fox in sheep’s skin – she was sly as she was unassuming.
She liked buying her white lilies every time she visited, and they would sit in her vase until they wilted.
She thought they represented her love for Yuhua, somehow, but they never caught Yuhua’s favour. Just like how this girlfriend never caught on to Yuhua’s trap.
It just so happens that she couldn’t keep it in her pants long enough to execute her plan to marry Gege and benefit her family. (Yuhua still thinks this is ridiculous. Ridiculously funny.)
Gege catches them as she tries to strip Yuhua down to her underwear in his room, seeing as she lied and said he wouldn’t be home tonight.
Gege had white lilies in his room. Yuhua thought it was a sweet touch.
-
Gege must have some messed up ideas about revenge, because, she thinks bitterly, this is excessively cruel.
Xia Longwei is much taller than her, even in heels. His eyes are stone, features sharp, muscles toned. Yuhua doesn’t know how to react – she’s never met anyone like him before, in this context. Family men are not her type, she thinks, uncertain. (Quietly angry.)
He doesn’t spare her a kind word, and she doesn’t spare him anything. She’s too bitter, too angry, too upset – to spare anything.
-
She doesn’t get married in a white chapel, with white orchids in her bouquet, with Yuzhu by her side. She doesn’t get married in red, kneeling by the feet of her in-laws as she serves them pu’er tea while Gege watches from the side.
Instead, she gets married in a foreign land, in a registry office, with only Longwei’s eyes on her. (Ironic, she thinks, how painfully ironic.)
She then suddenly remembers that she’s only eighteen, that her hands are shaking as he slides the diamond ring on her ring finger, and that she’s only realising now how big his hands are compared to her own.
She’s reminded of how weak she’s gotten, but pride refuses to allow crying out of sadness on her wedding day.
He gives her hydrangeas to hold in her bouquet. Plain, simple, pink and blue. Tears roll down her face, hot and fast.
“What’s wrong?” He says, oddly soft and coaxing. Yuhua shakes her head.
Nainai seizes her arm at the siheyuan gate, the strength in each knotted finger belying her eighty plus years. “Aiya, Yuzhu!” Nainai’s reprimand is loud and vehement, the white pearls hanging off her neck swaying like willow branches with each emphatic head shake, “When will you stop running off? You’re filthy! Go clean up and come welcome Gege home.”
Nainai’s grumblings so often go ignored — it takes a telephone chain, every time Yuzhu tracks mud down the corridor or lets crickets loose in the kitchen, to weasel out an apology from the troublesome second daughter, up the ladder from the cook to the maidservant to Nainai to Mama to Yuhua. Beloved Yuhua who can never muster up true anger at her antics, only a muted disappointment that melts into fondness once they’re alone.
(Don’t do that again, Yuhua tells her, stroking her hair. Don’t make Nainai and Mama mad. And what she means is: You could never make me mad.)
This time though, Yuzhu nearly trips over herself in her haste to obey, tumbling forward as Nainai releases her iron grip with one last heaving sigh. Yuzhu runs barefoot through the courtyard, kicking up dust, and into the secluded back building where she and Yuhua spend listless summer days in their joint bedroom.
All the windows and doors are wide open, inviting in the infrequent breeze that offers temporary relief from the humid heat. Yuhua is sitting at the vanity, applying a rosy pink to her eyelids. She lines only the very edge of her upper lashline and the outside corners of her eyes. They crinkle up when Yuhua turns and smiles at her, beckoning her over.
Yuhua is sixteen and growing more beautiful by the day. Her beauty is delicate and girlish, blossoming like the colorful florals stitched into the silk qipaos she’s taken to wearing. Her dress today is the color of cream and eggshell, demure, falling to her ankles. Yuzhu doesn’t want to tarnish it with her own dirt-streaked cheeks, so she goes to wash up.
She eyes her own reflection in the bathroom mirror. Bright-eyed and full-cheeked, hair unkempt and dark as ink. She’s scrubbed all the grime off her face, though some of it remains under her bare fingernails.
Yuhua approaches from behind and helps her brush the tangles out of her hair. She picks out a leaf, lips mirthful. Yuzhu chatters while she works:
“I think I’m getting really good at mahjong now. All the old men say so.”
“Better than me, I’m certain.”
“Do you think Gege brought back presents?”
“Probably.”
They don’t see Gege often. But Yuzhu always looks forward to his visits. He brings them small souvenirs from his travels overseas, knows Yuzhu’s preference for exotic sweets.
Surely enough, there’s a box of Turkish delight placed next to the tea set when the two sisters join the family around the drawing room table. The braid Yuhua wove whips around Yuzhu’s shoulders as she greets Gege with an exuberant hug. Yuhua offers him a quiet smile, fingers curling around Yuzhu’s and gently tugging, guiding Yuzhu to sit next to her.
Nainai pours the hot water over the dried chrysanthemum buds in the teapot. They begin to float and circle around, bobbing softly. This is Yuzhu’s favorite tea — not to drink, but to watch as it steeps. The way the petals unfurl, many-fingered and cheerful, waving like tiny sea anemones. It reminds her of the aquarium they visited on her tenth birthday.
Yuhua was with her then. Yuhua has always been with her as far back as she can remember.
he steps through the doorway, inclining his head as he passes. ”i won’t keep you long, then.” the air in her room is cloying, warm with sleep; he runs a hand through his hair, shining darkly in the low light.
”i brought you a gift,” he says softly, kindly, and then produces said gift in all its rectangular glory, resting solidly against the palm of his hand. ”would you like to open it?”
her eyes brighten in childlike wonder, taking the parcel in her hands and admiring it for a moment, before pulling gently at the tasteful ribbon and unwrapping the rest.
"thank you so much." she says softly, as if to not disturb the quiet room, and their comfortable quiet. "i love it!"
with lidded eyes, she inches closer to him. with her free hand, she reaches over to his tie to pull him closer, and kisses him with much more longing and bite.
when they pull apart, he exhales, chasing the feeling. ”i thought you might.” he smiles, with rare tenderness, and then pulls away, brushing a lock of white hair behind her ear. ”happy birthday, hua-er.” and then, quickly as it appeared, he stows the emotion away again. treasures lose their value when you flaunt them, after all.
a swell of noise comes up from down below. ”did you enjoy yourself today, at least?” he asks, settling into one of the ornately carved chairs in the room.
swamped with emotion, she feels crushed and breathless, gaping for air, melting at his smile. she suddenly feels like she's about to cry - as much as she loves the ornate necklace he's gifted her, she feels like his love; the secret, blatant display of it, is the best gift she's received tonight.
dazed, lost, she trails a step behind him to sit in the chair right next to his. her whole body crawls into it, with yuhua looking up at him with her head resting in her arms.
"i did." she lolls, absentmindedly taking his hand in hers and playing with his fingers. "drinking was fun, but these parties are never aboutme." she chuckles as if she just said something funny. she smooths his fingers out.
"but the best is you coming to see me. thank you, really." i'm sure no-one else wanted to see you. the unsaid words coil around her lips but never makes a sound.
she brings his fingers to her lips and kisses them.
peering at the tv sat opposite the chairs, her gaze returns to him.
"want to watch a movie?" she'd rather climb into bed (with him), though, but she doesn't know how to pose the question, only how to twiddle her thumbs.
”of course,” he says, and then inclines his head, dark eyes following her movement as she comes to perch in the chair beside him. ”i’d be a rather poor fiancé if i didn’t even come to see you on your birthday.” he laughs—short, low, his mirth like a secret that passes between them.
the smile that follows is more apologetic, more restrained. ”i’m afraid that i must go see my father soon,” he says, knowing that she will likely stay alone, in this cavernous room of hers. ”he is...not feeling well, as you know.” truthfully, they had told him there wasn’t much time left—and perhaps that could explain the coldness with which ba is treating him, the gloom on his face every time longwei goes to embrace him the way he was when he was young.
he leans closer, cupping her cheek as his lips brush her forehead. ”another time?” his breath ghosts against her skin.
solemnness hangs heavy, eating at the quiet cheer that once filled her room. yuhua tries not to let it betray her face, but they already know he's long since wormed into her heart, intentionally or otherwise.
she pouts at him like she's six. "take care," she says reluctantly, sighing a little, softly. she desperately tries to cling onto his affection. she didn't care about old man xia. no.
in return, she reaches for his face, tracing the line of his jaw. "in return,"she says, still upset, "promise me you'll be okay, no matter what."unreasonable - but she's still the birthday queen tonight, so she lets herself off with a smile.
"remember," she pulls gently at his cheek, imagining a universe beyond his irises. "even if the whole world turns against you, i'll be your ally."
she stretches over to press her forehead against his, and smiles. "you won't be able to get rid of me." she edges back. she wants to be happy, for him, but the weariness slips through. she's heard a lot about old man xia, and nothing has been good.
"i love you," she whispers with her eyes closed, surprising herself at how smoothly it came out.
he looks her in the eyes, struggling with some unknown emotion. ”i love you, too—“ softly, as if he is about to stumble; his thumb comes to rest on her lips. hesitating. ”goodnight, yuhua.”
———
they leave the glowing lights of the bund behind, the thrum of music drowning out any attempts as longwei guides the sleek vehicle down quiet roads.
his finger taps against a button on the wheel, the volume quieting until the two of them can hear their thoughts. ”i don’t think he’ll last much longer,” he says—unusual, to speak his thoughts aloud, to trust in someone as he does yuhua. ”i might be scarce in the coming months—settling his affairs.”
just then, he hears the screaming of a siren, instinct taking over as he pulls aside, to the outer lane. it rushes past quickly, swallowed into the dimly lit street. ”strange,” he murmurs, thoughtful. ”the only...”

He breathes slowly, heavily, eyes following Zeke’s every movement. He reaches to comb his fingers affectionately through Zeke’s hair, languishing at how soft the strands are. Excitement and anticipation render him speechless - he can’t ever imagine the real Zeke ever doing this for him - and thoughts inevitably turn to the accounts he’s heard from other people about how he fucks - how he gives blow jobs and
His breath drags, and he pulls at Zeke’s hair, tugging.
Zeke doesn’t act out of the goodness of his heart—if such a nebulous concept even exists beyond a convenient figure of speech. He acts either because he wants to or because he has to. The carrot or the stick.
And he certainly wants this.
He shifts his weight forward, lips parting. And halts mere centimeters from Cain’s dick, warm exhalations gusting over the sensitive head. He hovers there for the span of two heartbeats. Expectant rather than hesitant—like saying grace before supper, like holding a breath to sweeten the release.
Cain’s fingers in his hair run out of patience. Zeke’s already moving again, taking in Cain down to the base and sucking with straightforward, brutal efficiency.
Cain's lips part in a strangled gasp, eyes fluttering, indulging in the strong waves of pleasure that kneads in his gut and attacks every nerve in his body.
He can't stop himself bucking into Zeke's mouth just to feel a little more of his wet tongue on him.
Zeke is as mindblowingly good as they say - Cain struggles to even think a coherent sentence. What comes out of his mouth is a string of unintelligible moans and wanton sighs, fingers still tugging at Zeke's hair, holding on for dear life.
He wants to say something, he wants to say everything - that Zeke's so fucking beautiful, that he loves him, loves him to the moon and back, loves him for
"Ahhhh..." He moans instead, barely getting a word in. "You're so... Ugh... Hah..."
His fingers start smoothing out his hair, clumsy, but he pets his head, hoping that somehow, Zeke would understand.
His head lolls to the side to grant better access to the sensitive underside of his throat, momentarily distracted by the warm pressure Cain’s gentle nips impart. Cain could stand to bite down a little harder, but critiquing the other’s technique isn’t in his agenda tonight.
Zeke reaches under the waistband of Cain’s briefs without warning, wrapping his entire hand around Cain’s cock and pumping once, experimentally, to gauge his reaction.
He feels himself stiffen, harden against Zeke’s hand almost immediately, overly sensitive to each touch and craving more, leaning closer against him.
He sighs wantonly, groaning against Zeke’s skin. His hands trail down to grab at his thighs, willing him to come closer, encouraging him to touch more. God-
He bites at Zeke’s skin, tongue lapping up his marks. He lets out a whine from the back of his throat.
“Please,” He pleads, sucking at Zeke’s neck. “Don’t stop.” He says, caught breathless.
Arousal kindles in his gut, arcing wider with the pleasant ache Cain’s enthusiastic teething creates. His neck throbs in time with his quickening pulse. For a indulgent moment, Zeke sinks into the sensation like into a warm bath, eyelids shuttering. His hand continues to stroke Cain leisurely, bringing him to full hardness.
“Be good,” he warns vaguely and rises, settling onto his knees at the Gryffindor’s feet. Zeke nudges apart his thighs a little more and scoots closer, pulling Cain’s dick out of its confines.

His breath drags, and he pulls at Zeke's hair, tugging.
He keeps kissing Zeke through half lidded eyes, taking pleasure in the sensation, that relaxes him, taking him to a dream like, comfortable state. He wants to keep kissing him forever, is a comfortable thought, unconsciously holding him closer.
He groans softly at the brief touch, resting his head on his shoulder, nibbling at his neck gently.

Through fluttering eyes and a smothered yawn, Cain cradles this feeling of stillness in the air, sound levelling off and melting so fondly.
His fingers greedily swim, from cupping a good feel of Zeke’s ass to reaching for the skin of his back, lightly scratching as if to force a way in. He closes his eyes briefly to sleep, humming at the warmth of Zeke’s palm on his cheeks, the brief kiss.
He opens them, a little disappointed. With sad looking eyes, he peers at Zeke for a moment - before, willing him to reach even closer, to give him a proper kiss, mouth gaping, tongue thirsty.
Cain’s hands slide up and under his shirt, wandering. His fingernails leave prickling tingles where they graze. They trail over the ridge of a vertebrae, where the skin is thin, raising shivers.
Zeke wonders if Cain knows what his own eyes are broadcasting at the moment, pleading for. If Cain will regret pulling him in for a longer kiss — messier, wetter — the next morning.
But he’s never shown much mercy for sober Cain’s feelings before. And it’s a night of celebration, isn’t it?
His hand falls to Cain’s lap, deftly and decisively unzipping his pants.

The teasing undertones from Zeke’s Slytherin friend go completely missed.
Cain barely registers Oliver’s relinquishment at all, never paying to mind how all his actions will translate to the whole Slytherin crowd by tomorrow morning - the New Year.
But none of that matters, his drunken mind registers, since he has Zeke’s warmth pressed into him so close, his presence soothing like a big blanket. His eyelids droop, heavy. Absentmindedly, he rubs Zeke’s side gently in response, feeling incredibly comforted, especially now they just had each other’s company. Like how it always should be.
Cain gives a loud yawn and blinks sleep away - he’s tired too, and just about ready to crash when they get to the usual classroom, pushing the door open without much thought.
Surprisingly empty - or maybe Cain just couldn’t be bothered checking in his current state. He pulls Zeke over to some old chairs, planting himself on one, and Zeke on his lap, arms cradling him, before his head droops into Zeke’s chest.
“Happy New Year… I’m kinda sleepy too… sorry…” He says sheepishly. He looks up at Zeke, then, wide eyed and expectant, unsure what he even wants to wait for.
There are probably a half-dozen chairs in the vicinity, dusty and unoccupied — standing forlornly for years, maybe, without the weight of an occupant. A half-dozen empty seats he could’ve taken instead. But Cain tugs him onto his lap without a second thought, and Zeke gives into inertia, boneless. Cain’s lap is much cushier than any old chair.
And the view isn’t half bad. He cups Cain’s face in both palms, holding it captive while he watches the Gryffindor’s pupils dilate by fractions. “Sorry for what.”
Without waiting for a response, Zeke ducks his head to peck Cain on the lips, teasingly quick before drawing back. “Happy New Year,” he parrots, voice airy.

“That’s a—” his voice hitches, slipping out a bit more breathless than he intends, “shame.” Zeke rakes his nails down Cain’s side and skims over the waistband, fingers tracing the outline of his length through the fabric.
“Seems painful for you.”
“Don’t-” He sighs breathlessly, anxious for Zeke to act on his ghost of a touch. “Tease me.” His fingers thrust a bit further for good measure, and promptly decides to fingerfuck him a little before dragging his own pants down single-handedly, impatient.
He presses the tip at his hole, and goes in slowly, taking occasional peeks at Zeke’s expression in an attempt to control himself.
Ari speckles kisses all over Sheba’s forehead. When she wakes, Sheba wraps her arms around Ari’s waist – trying to show appreciation while trying to remain buried the warm covers all that once. In vain.
The phone cuts through their giggles, and Sheba has to let go so Ari can reach it, yukata completely haphazard. Sheba closes her eyes and processes Ari’s smooth Japanese, even though she already knows the contents of the call.
Breakfast.
Sheba’s mind wanders elsewhere.
There’s not much to see in the area, nothing much around but snow and the occasional car. Still, Sheba’s keen to get out of their room, and Ari somehow knows the area well enough to go without Google Maps.
They hold each other’s gloved hands as both traverse an uneasy level of snow. Ari’s not usually this talkative, but she illustrates the scenery with stories about her past visit, because Sheba thinks she can hear love in every word.
She smiles despite herself, despite almost tripping as she nearly slips on a slab of ice. Ari grabs her arm and saves her from the shame.
She smiles again, a little happier this time.
When they reach the top of the small mountain, with the entirety of the town at their feet, Sheba doesn’t stop her urge to yell at the scene until she empties the entirety of her lungs.
But she also kind of wants to cry, too, somehow.
Ari bursts out laughing. Sheba turns red, pouting. They stay like that for a while.
Finally, when she stops, Ari just smiles her smile, and wraps her arms around Sheba.
“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?”
Sheba’s not looking at the snow-capped roofs and beyond.
“It is.” She says, and kisses her.
Sheba insisted on watching a countdown sequence, so they compromised. The TV’s showing another New Year’s special and Ari’s laptop has the live countdown sequence from Yokohama.
Lost in concentration on Ari’s mermaid braid, Sheba misses the count at 10, but follows from then, hands still determined to finish off Ari’s hair.
“Happy new year babe.” Ari grabs one of Sheba’s hands by surprise and kisses it. She turns before Sheba can stop her, and smiles, reaching to give her a peck on the nose.
Sheba sighs. She’ll never win.
“Happy new year baby.” Sheba follows with a forehead kiss. “I love you.”
Ari pushes her down onto the futon and kisses her until Sheba’s own fingers start undoing all her hard work on Ari’s hair all by themselves.
