grian’s used to his life being awful, but that doesn’t make it easy. he is starved for love, but all his parents have for him is expectations, rules, punishments, scorn, disdain, and violence. forcing him to be smaller, to be quieter, to be less of himself… and to still perform and deliver, or else.
he’s familiar with pain and fear and the cost of even the smallest of mistakes.
his only reprieve is his two friends, his bad boys, jimmy and joel.
jimmy has a big family and sneaks out to hang out with his boys to escape the stifling love that swings from overprotective to invisible, blending into golden haired siblings until he hardly individually matters. joel, on the other hand, has absent parents with high-career, high-travel lives, and stays with his sickly grandma in a small apartment, occasionally needing escape from his own circumstances of almost being more a caretaker than a grandson, constantly afraid for her health without any further adult support.
they know grian has it worse.
they also know they can’t fix it.
they’re just a group of teens in cheap leather jackets pretending to be something they’re not (tough and unafraid), trying to outrun the pressures and wounds of the world.
it’s always been just the three of them against the world. until one day, grian gets a new neighbour. next door, his bedroom window to grian’s bedroom window, moves a boy named scar. with chronic pain, a sensible mom, a brother who’s just left for college, and a father who is nowhere in sight, he’s dealing with family fracture, his parents’ divorce, and an uprooted life, thinking it’s the worst… until he hears screaming from the house next door.
