There are a lot of risk of attack on ones personal computer that can stop its function and connecting to an unknown network is not safe either. The first thing that everyone should do to protect against any type of attack of virus is having and anti virus program installed into your laptop or desktop. Depending what you will mainly use your personal computer for there are specific anti virus that protect you starting off with basic ones to internet surfing as well as file scanning for threats when downloading files from online. Best anti virus programs for personal computers are Norton and McAfee. There is always risk when downloading from torrent websites because you never know if someone has placed a virus in the file that can ruin how your personal computer functions. Another risk is connecting to an unknown network or a public network. If you don't know what type of users are connected on that same network and if they have intention of looking at your private information. So you are left open to an attack if you don't know how secure the network is and who has access to it. 

The information from the research of ABC Institute of Research is top secret and is only meant to be shared with XYZ Inc.then they have to options on how to keep it private but only one will be the best option for them. There is asymmetric and symmetric encryption available for their documents. First symmetric it uses a shared key  for encryption for when a file is being sent over the internet and then there is a key to decrypt the file to make it readable to the receiver. This method is meant to make all information being sent a secret between only the sender and receiver so it cannot be viewed by anyone except for those that have the  shared key. Then there is asymmetric that also uses a key but it uses two different keys one is private and the other is a public key. The public key can be sent to anyone that will need to access the information but because its a public key an attacker can gain access into the same information. The best method that ABC research company and XYZ Inc, should use is symmetric encryption because it is the most secure and private way to exchange information over the internet. Between both types of encryption this method will best suit the companies needs for privacy. 

It is always important to secure a network infrastructure especially that of a company with 1,500 employees. As all systems they are not perfect and are flawed and cyber attackers know this so if its not secure they will access vital information and exploit it as well as ruin the company costing them a lot of money to repair. To avoid that all together its best to secure our servers. First thing to do is to test what vulnerabilities are in the servers by trying to gain access into it from the outside like a mock attack that a outside attacker would do to get in. After doing the run on how secure the server is we can start to fix those openings. Such as restricting access to certain machines and closing ports that are not being used. That way it will deny access to anyone that tries to use them because they are inaccessible to extract any information from within and make it more difficult to find a way around it. Some security will need to create patches that can be installed into the system but only using specific patches for its purpose or they are rendered useless if they are not meant to protect the specif vulnerability.

To start off i want to explain what ping sweeps and port scans are and what they do. First the ping sweep, what it does is it send an echo from computer and tries to send this echo request to another specific machine and see if it gets a response. If it does than that means that its attainable and you are able to communicate with that computer. Then there is the port scan, that is run on the computer and it will notify you of what ports are open and what service is being used on that computer. These methods are usually used by attackers that are trying to gain access into the system and take information. For security purposes it is wise to use these methods in your own system because you will be able to see the vulnerabilities in your security and be able to patch any holes in it. Such as knowing if they will able to detect the programs you are running as well as the operating system. With the information they obtain ping sweeps and port scans they are able to make a plan on which tools to use to break down your security. So it's something to worry about if their is no security set up to prevent any attacker from finding a vulnerability such as installing patches. Making sure that the right patch is installed in the system or else they can get straight into the system.
