In the past 10 years since my traumatic friendship breakup with my ex best friend #mytragicbackstory I have often mistaken random strangers for her. That’s not difficult to do as she’s a nerdy looking white woman with glasses, you could throw a stone and hit 10 of her in any given public space. But this morning at the airport at 5 AM I saw a woman who looked so convincingly like her I had to back track and sit across from her, just to be sure. As it turns out, my recognition of her wasn’t completely unfounded: she wasn’t my ex best friend, but she was my friend’s ex boyfriend’s friend, someone who I got to know a little but completely lost touch with when they broke up. Although it didn’t nearly carry the weight of seeing my first and closest friend, seeing her today carried its own kind of sadness, the pain of a life you can’t go back to. The knowledge that other people’s lives still go on long after their time in your story is done. It’s a strange and tender feeling.

At the end of the day, you can’t delay joy until life looks a certain way. You deserve to enjoy your life now.

I can't readily identify the yellow one with the heraldic-looking border between Peru and Antarctica but it could well be the Royal Banner of Scotland or some variant of the Walloon flag from Belgium. Either answer raises merely more questions
