Just watched the pilot of Stargate SG-1 and I'm? so confused? spoilers below the cut
there's a weird gate. Woman soldier is curious. Snake aliens appear and kidnap her. Gate go schloop.
Hard Bitten Guy With A Soft Emotional Core gets brought back in by Shiny Bald General. He throws a tissue box through the gate?? to make contact with his Allergen Scientist Pal. Allergen Scientist Pal says hi.
New mission is a go. We meet Feminist Astrophysics Babe. We go through the stargate. Schloop schloop. Allergen Scientist Pal still lives on the alien planet with his alien wife, but they're all actually Egyptians (cue uncomfortable exotification). Hard Bitten Guy meets his adoptive alien son again. Recon happens, meanwhile Alien Wife and Adoptive Son get kidnapped.
They all go after them and find another alien planet where they've captured a load of people and the women are being individually kidnapped and stripped naked to see if the lady in sexy bejeweled underwear and her lesbian space parasite penis like them. Woman soldier no likey, oops she's dead. Surprise surprise Alien Wife is liked and becomes the new Lesbian Space Parasite Penis.
Other stuff happens and there's lots of shooting and some more people get Penis Parasited and they make it back to Earth with a bunch of refugees (and NO ONE CHECKS THEM FOR PATHOGENS OR DOES ANY DECONTAM!??!?!) and Shiny Bald General looks very harangued.
There's now a new cross dimensional exploration team. Profit???? (For everyone except the general who would rather be writing his book in retirement)
I just. Is it worth continuing? Does it get any better? Does it get *worse*?? Are there more parasite lesbian space penises because I mean.
Ah. Yeah. That cut of the pilot is a nightmare for fans and new watchers alike.
From what I understand of the "through the grapevines" interviews that survived from the 90's when the first season was airing. One of the higher ups at Showtime wanted it to be basically Game of Thrones before Game of Thrones existed. So a handful of the early episodes are a rough watch. But they can be skipped (Emancipation, The Broca Divide and Hathor being the titles). And the person who was in charge of the sexist desicions was cut from his connection to the show before season 1 was finished.
I'm not saying the rest of the show is completely flawless when it comes to issues like that. It is again a show made in the 90's-early 00's. But it is toned way way waaaay down. And is one of the greatest sci fi shows I have ever watched.
