ARCHIPELAGO (2010)
Settling In Together
We spend the next day doing as planned, searching for a place to meet both our needs as neither of us felt like a car was necessary. That put us at needing to be roughly midway between Henrikâs and where Edwardâs looking at getting certified to teach. There isnât really a lack of options, more a lack of my personal confidence in the ability to pay for said options, though Edward seems to take everything into considerationâŚor maybe heâs just being polite to the people showing us round?
We end up with a stack of business cards, all with a brief outline of fees on their backs, two dozen photos on cell phones, and starving. I lead the way to the chip shop and we find a place to sit in the crowded little space.
"I donât even remember what place was where at this point, and I think theyâre all blurrinâ into one giant flat in my memory," I shake my head and blink a few times, trying to recall any details that stood out and not being able to separate out much. Too many places in one day, but theyâd all been in the same area so itâd seemed the thing to do at the time.
"Didnât wanna waste what few days I have off, but starting to question my sanity in going through so many flats in one day." Between that and the earlier call from his mum, it was a seriously domestic day, not a bad thing in the least, just sort ofâŚnew. I mean, yeah weâve been together for about a year now, but we havenât been physically together for most of that time, so this side feels simultaneously sudden and not. Itâs like we live in our own timeline.
"I know, Rose.  Forgive me, i was a bit overenthusiastic in this wasnât i?  It  was my suggestion."
She assures me itâs fine but i shrug.  âWell, stillâŚmy doing and i donât want to waste the little time you have off.  Bit of an idiot, me.â  She argues but i push on.
"I do have an idea though. Â I can print out all these pictures, organize them by flat and we can look over them when we like. Â I have a bit of a head for certain details. Â Iâm sure i can organize it. Â I want us to be sure and i want your thoughts on it. Â If i have to pay us up for another month here, it is fine. Â I want us to be sure on where we want to live and i donât want to hurry that."
"I know," I try to suppress the smile, feeling my cheeks flush a little. He's so certain about us, and it always surprises me. I love it, I love him, and it all makes me a bit...giddy, like I'm afraid if I open my mouth in the next thirty seconds I'll just giggle or do something else equally stupid, so I smash my lips together and count to a hundred in my head.
"Good thing one of us is organized," I start after a few chips and time to regain my lack of idiocy. "If it were left to me, we'd probably end up with a dartboard full of photos and the call that whatever we hit, we keep. Possible I'm slightly impulsive at times."
I think Edward might be what keeps me grounded and let's me focus on a goal instead of just wandering through life, which I tell him and then wince at because that sounds totally bizarre. "I just mean...I guess I think through things more with you than I have in the past--and that's good and makes it so I've finally been workin' on a few goals instead of just existing. I dunno, weird compliment, I guess."

Homecoming
"Good," i smile, relaxing then as we sit to eat our breakfast.  "That was the plan in the first place. I wasnât going to be hereâŚ.somewhere you could stay for almost completely free and save up.  That was to help as we then go looking for a place for us and to get classes.  I meant for it to be helpful in that, primarily for you so you wouldnât have to worry about money."
Bless my sweet Rose, i never wanted her to think herself a burden to me because she wasnât.  âWeâll start tomorrow.  Today letâsâŚjust relax and be us and marathon movies.  Iâve missed that.  And then weâll have another cooking class for dinner, yeah?â
Itâs an easy day, and one Iâd love to repeat often, just me and Edward all tucked up on the couch watching the extended cut of all the Lord of the Rings movies. Once I learned heâd read themâŚwell he had to see them after that. Okay, and theyâre a favorite, and an excuse to stay put for hours on end.
After The Two Towers, we decided to take a break and work on cooking class round two, this time eggplant parmesan since Iâd made homemade marinara before he got home from Africa. Somehow that seems to impress him, or maybe he just likes the domestic aspect? Whatever it is, if heâs smiling, Iâll take it.
Itâs instruction time on dredging and pan frying and all sorts of fun. I thoroughly enjoy this, us together in the kitchen making something together. Iâm used to cooking, and I even enjoy it, but to have someone do it with me, and to know that weâre working together on something for the both of usâŚokay, sure that sounds terribly swoony-girl of me, but so what?
We even eat dinner at the table, and I gotta say, it turned out lovely. âWell done, baby, this is fantastic,â I smile at him. âThink my new favorite hobby is cooking with you. Hope youâre not decidinâ you canât stand beinâ in the kitchen.â
"No, not at all!  i love it," i say with a smile.  "I really enjoy cooking with you and learning to do more than the sad bachelor schtick."  I laugh.  "HonestlyâŚmacaroni, salads, sandwiches, canned soup, cereal, ramen, basically any boxed pasta or canned meal.  It was pretty pathetic."
Bless her patience with me on all of it. Â âThink iâll learn to love cooking. Â Especially together.â Â i wink at her at this, digging in and loving it.
We head to bed somewhat early, all snuggled up together in bed, not a stitch of clothing on but needing nothing more than the intimacy of the moment, me completely happy to just be home with her.
"Tomorrow morning, after breakfast, we can head out on foot, go for a walk, pick up a paper and look for possible options for flats and then head right over to check them out. Â Wâll find a place in no time."
Sometimes you meet someone, and itâs so clear that the two of you, on some level belong together. As lovers, or as friends, or as family, or as something entirely different. You just work, whether you understand one another or youâre in love or youâre partners in crime. You meet these people throughout your life, out of nowhere, under the strangest circumstances, and they help you feel alive. I donât know if that makes me believe in coincidence, or fate, or sheer blind luck, but it definitely makes me believe in something.

Homecoming
"I know," i laugh gently, tucking a lock of hair behind her ear.
"You were incredibly sweet yourself and i just liked when you actually talked to me. Â So i stuck with the small talk, seemed to get you to notice me a little bit so i didn;t mind."
I smile at the memory of this, so long ago and yet, not at all.  âI was content to just be friends, you barely knew me and i was leaving.  So no matter how much i wanted to ask you out i thought âwell i canâtâ and i was too chicken anywayâŚand then you go being all sweet and kissing me,  I was done for.  There was no hope, i was just going to tumble down the rabbit hole and fall in love with you.â
"Well, I knew you werenât makinâ a move, so I had to." I slip my hand in his and lead him down the hall.Â
"Otherwise we wouldâve been stalled out before we got anywhere. Or maybe Iâm just impatient," I muse, slipping my shoes off and setting my little pet wolf on the dresser.Â
"And I think that itâs more than possible shy and nervous Edward got lost somewhere in Africa. All the sweetness, all the kindness, and seems to me you arenât nervous about much of anythinâ anymore." I stand in front of him, tugging at his belt buckle. "Also seems to me itâs birthday girlâs choice for anotherâŚ" I check the clock, "two and a quarter hours."
I pull his shirt out from his trousers, hands snaking their way up to his stomach. âAnd for my choice, you need less clothes.â
I smile and bite my lip. Â She was right, the shy and nervous me, that one left. Â That was the me i knew had to end, i had gained some confidence in my time away. Â Without anyone there to tear me down, i was able to become who i was meant to be. Â More myself.
All i do now is smile and comply to her wishes, but only hers, kissing her as she tugs at my clothes and i help her out of hers.
"Thereâs no need to hesitate anymore, " i tell her with another kiss  as the last of our clothes fall away.  "And tonight i will give you whatever you want.  However you want it.  Anything for the birthday girl."
When I finally wake up in the morning, heâs not in bed with me. Silly man, waking up early. I close my eyes, sprawling out across the whole bed and taking a few quiet moments to relive last night. Heâd been so sweet and gentle, a thorough and slow exploration of one another thatâd lasted late into the night and thatâd likely led to me being worn out enough to sleep straight through him getting up.Â
I tame my hair and pull on my robe before shuffling out in search of coffee and my Edward. He unfolds from his position on the couch, setting down what is either a book or a journal, Iâm not really sure, before coming to give me a light kiss. I burrow into the warmth of his chest and breathe him in.
"Still canât quite believe youâre really here," I tell him, looking up into his eyes and twining a curl around my index finger. "Sometimes it feels like a dream, but if it is, I really donât wanna wake up at all."
How I possibly deserve someone so sweet is beyond me. How Iâve earned the love of a man as good as Edward is completely baffling.
In my alone time, Iâd spent a while thinking it over, and hadnât been able to figure it out, not really. Heâs good and kind, has a sharp mind and a massive heart, and generally makes me a better and more grounded person than Iâve ever been. He makes me dream of being more than Iâve ever though to be andâŚwell, he makes me consider things Iâve never thought to: university, a real career that I have the potential to love, âŚmarriage. All of it.Â
LikeâŚI can actually see myself in a proper house, with a proper garden and a dog or a cat or something. Itâs soâŚdomestic. Iâd never thought to be domestic. In fact, I rather thought Iâd just move away to some other country, live in some tiny flat, and be a starving author or something stupidly romantic and useless like that. Maybe have a string of lovers across the Mediterranean who I base my characters off of, it was all wildly idiotic and more likely Iâd be a shopgirl forever, but now? Well, Edward has this magic charm of making me consider the future, and Iâve no idea how he does it.
Throughout all this, Iâve been sipping absently at my coffee, resting my head on his shoulder as we sit on the couch and the sunlight streams through the living room window. I snap out of my own head at last, smiling up at him. âContinued culinary lessons this morninâ? Think I could use a bit of help, and maybe an idea what youâd like. Iâm too hungry to make decisions this early.â
I chuckle lightly.
"Well," i sip at my own coffee in consideration.  "Depends on how extraordinary we want to go.  I vote somewhat simple.  Waffles, fruits, maybe some egg and someâŚsausage or something for you," i suggest.  "We can get more creative with dinner tonight, i think."
I have other thoughts running through me head and had been since last night. Â Particularly concerning that origami flower ring hidden in the back of one of my drawers. Â I wanted to propose, first with that and then get a proper ring later down the road when we werenât so bogged down with things like moving and school and jobs. Â The trouble was coming up with when was the best time. Â And where.
I shrug the thought off for now though as i stand with her and join to help her in the kitchen. âDid you do any looking into other places?  I thought we could perhaps look into some this week.  Itâll be a bit of a busy month.  Need to look into some teaching programs.  GoodnessâŚiâll have to visit mother sometime this week, too. Or maybe next week when i have my hair cut. And C.â
I glance at Rose and then apologize. Â âYou donât have to come when i visit them.â
"No, itâs alrightâŚI mean, your mum is easy enough to get along with, so thatâs no issue. As far as Cynthia," I blow out a breath as I gather up ingredients. "I know sheâs no great fan of me, nor I of her so farâŚ" I glance over at him, trying to decide exactly how to word what it is I mean to say.
"But given that weâre together, and not in some casual way where we go on a date now and again, I feel like I should probably make at least an effort at civility. I meanâŚshe is your sister. You just lucked out and I donât have any siblings to contend with."
We get to work on breakfast, and itâs quite nice having him in the kitchen with me again. After all, this was where itâd all started: just a nice guy coming to help out the hired helpâŚ
"As far as other places, I havenât looked much. Most of whatâs open seems ludicrously expensive by my standards. Might be Iâll have to wait on classes."
"Donât wait, Rose," i tell her with all sincerity.  "I want you to be able to do something you love and you shouldnât put yourself on hold.  You know i am willing to help you in that regard.  It is not fair to have only me working towards something i want.  I want you to be able to as wellâŚ"
I stop myself short and let out a breath. Â âI don;t want it to seem as though i am forcing you in any way but i am here to support you in any way i can. Â Classes included. Â Weâll find a place, weâll go looking this week, what do you say?â Â I ask her, helping with the batter.
I drop the subject of my sister, weâd deal with that another time. Â We had a week.
"I don't take it as forcin' anything, Edward," I stretch across the little kitchen and kiss him lightly. "I appreciate the support, I just...don't want to be a burden..."
He argues against that immediately, and I just smile. "You really are...absolutely incredible, d'ya know that? Not many guys out there in the world as kind as you are. Okay, this week I'll look into one or two classes--nothin' extreme. I'm not looking to get into Cambridge or somethin', just a start. And we'll look for a place. Maybe I can get more hours at the shop for a while."
I shrug and we finish up breakfast, getting everything onto plates and making for the little dining table. "I've at least been pretty good at saving up since I got back...helped immensely that you already had this place paid up through now."
It's weird having a talk about finances with a guy. Then again, if I have to do so with anyone, at least it's with Edward. Sure, we're from...very different backgrounds, but he's never held it against me, and I like that he doesn't seem to think it's his place to take care of everything. He understands me without me even having to say anything, and that's reassuring given that otherwise we'd have some awkward conversations.Â

"Well, I knew you weren't makin' a move, so I had to." I slip my hand in his and lead him down the hall.Â
"Otherwise we would've been stalled out before we got anywhere. Or maybe I'm just impatient," I muse, slipping my shoes off and setting my little pet wolf on the dresser.Â
"And I think that it's more than possible shy and nervous Edward got lost somewhere in Africa. All the sweetness, all the kindness, and seems to me you aren't nervous about much of anythin' any more." I stand in front of him, tugging at his belt buckle. "Also seems to me it's birthday girl's choice for another..." I check the clock, "two and a quarter hours."
I pull his shirt out from his trousers, hands snaking their way up to his stomach. "And for my choice, you need less clothes."

Homecoming
I shrug, âYour place is nice, so it really doesnât matter to me so long as Iâve got you with me. Cheesy, but accurate.â
We kill plenty of time in town before itâs time to head to Mumâs, which is easiest done by cab at this point. I laugh when she opens the door and snatches Edward into a crushing hug, babbling at him at a rapid pace.
"Look atcha! All muscled up and so tanâŚgood lord all that hair!" She flips his ponytail. "No wonder ya want me cuttinâ it soon, look at all that! How was it? Everythinâ alright? You made it without catchinâ ill or anythinâ yeah? Canât believe itâs been near on a year now!"
"Oi! One of us is supposed to be the birthday girl here, and sheâs beinâ neglected," I laugh, and Mum waves it off, but comes and kisses my cheeks anyway.
"Oh sweetheart, like I donât know that? One of us had to pack all eight and a half pounds of you in the mid-summer heat, and guess what, I still ainât forgot the twenty-odd hours waitinâ for you to decide youâd make your damn debut in society."
I roll my eyes at her turning to Edward to tell him she loves telling people how much torment I was from the start.
"Well itâs true! You wait, Iâll get revenge one of these days when youâre packinâ round one of your own."
I start a coughing fit right about then because Iâd been about to make a smartass comment about me being charming from the start, and then sheâd gone and slapped that out there for the world to hear.
"Good god, reign it in Mum! Is my gift this year embarrassment?"
"Hush, Iâll turn out right eventually. I always am. Now then, come sit down, grab somethinâ to drink, Rosie you know where everythinâ is. Edward, come tell me about this trip of yours. Iâve seen some of the pictures, what a cute bunch of kids you had!"
Shoulda known better than to show her those. I really should have.
Iâd blushed but smiled at the comment about children. Â Rose was embarrassed enough without me adding to it that the fact i wanted kids probably at some point and i wanted to marry her. Â No need to bring it all down in one day.
When Jackie asks about the trip and the kids i very gladly launch into storytelling mode. Â About the people with me, what we got accomplished, about all the kids, about the craft days we had, and little Sia Marie who was enamored with Rose.
"All the children love her, the entire village for that matter.  Almost as much as i do.  They want me to bring her with me next time, and i really want to.  But you know, all that time down thereâŚi decided i want to teach kids, you were right.  I want to be a teacher."
"I knew it," she comments, brandishing a mixing spoon like a weapon, "knew youâd be good at it. Kind-hearted and patient, you were bound to like teachinâ. And youâre goinâ back then? Both of ya this time?"
I nod and add that we hadnât set a date or anything of the sort, but that i wanted to go and meet these people whoâd become so important to him, and to me as well.Â
I also suck it up and mention my idea to take a few classes this fall. She just nods and says I should do whatever makes me happiest, and that I had support for whatever that was. âSo long as you donât stick round that shop forever since I know for a fact you donât want that, sweetheart.â
"No intention of it, Mum. Think Iâd lose my mind."
"You say that like ya didnât years ago," she laughs and I roll my eyes again. Oh lord itâs like sheâd saved it all up until Edward was back. "Oh now, you know âm only teasinâ." She had me grab plates for her and we get dinner to the table.
"Whatâd they feed ya in Africa? Somehow you got less scrawny, my prediction went awry," Mum asks after a minute, surveying Edward again.
"I know, sexy isnât he?" I add, winking, which makes her smack me on the arm. "Oi! This is revenge talk, deal with your consequences, Mum."
I laugh.
"OhâŚlots and lots of grains and fruits.  And the concept of vegetarianism isnât much there so, politeness, i ate some meat.  But mostly, lots of food made from flour and corns and wheat.  A few uhâŚbug things.  I stuck to the fattening carbs, i needed it.  Of course once i got home, Rose got me pizza.  But yeah, breads and a lot of physical activity.  Building things, playing football with the kids."
"Dancing," I add with a grin.
"Oh you dance, now do ya? Not allâŚslutty like my no-good daughter here, I assumeâ"
"Mum!!"
"You mustâve taken lessons or somethinâ, yeah? Always did love dancinâ myself, though Pete was terrible."
I just let that one go, knowing there was no way I was getting out of this anyway, and telling her that yes, Edward is a very good dancer, at least from my experience. âBut Dad couldnât dance?â
"You kiddinâ? Nearly crushed my toes off on our weddinâ day, the clumsy oaf," she smiles affectionately, she always gets this look when she talks about Dad, and Iâve always loved that. "He stepped on your Granâs toes and she socked him on the jaw for it. It was one helluva weddinâ."
Talk shifts to a few stories from Edwardâs trip, Mum was keen on hearing anything heâd tell. Think she liked the idea of travel, plus she adores kids so Iâm not surprised by all her interest.
"Such a shame people arenât lookinâ out for others like they should. Proud of you for sacrificinâ so much to become a part of the lives of people who most just kinda disregard. Youâve got a lotta integrity, Edward. I can see why you had Rose swooninâ from the start."
"I did not swoon," I sigh.
"Uh-huh. As your mum, I can officially state for the record I heard a swoony tone in your voice the first time you called me from that house and mentioned him."
"Mum, you make it impossible for me to seem cool and collected."
"Thatâs my job, sweetheart. Keep ya grounded."
I laughed gently at this, looking over at Rose. Â âMentioned me, huh?â Â I ask with a knowing grin. Â âSwooning? Â I was an awkward guy in a sweater that wasnât entirely sure how to act around you and you were swooning?â
Jackie informs me that yes that was the case and i keep on smiling at her, ideas coming to me for later when we were alone.
It then dawns on me i should meet with my family soon.  I don;t want to.  Well, with mum.  Not sisâŚor dadâŚneither of which bothered to write.  Only mum.  But i say nothing, Roseâs day, no need to bring her down.
"I do not swoon," I maintain, though I know sheâs not listening. A strange look crosses Edwardâs face, his brow furrowing briefly, and I make a note to ask him if everythingâs alright a little laterâŚlike when there arenât prying Mum-ears.
"Aside from embarrassment, I guess ya deserve a little somethinâ, yeah?" Mum pulls out a little box wrapped in pink paper. "Happy birthday, sweetheart."
I open it up to find a charm bracelet with charms like a little bull, a Spanish flag, a tiny Eiffel tower, a wine glass, a little cannoli, and a mini Colosseum.
"Awww, Mum," I pull her into a hug and she kisses my cheeks again. "Thank you, itâs perfect."
Edward fastens it for me, his fingers tracing over my right wrist as he looks it over.Â
"Thereâs room for more," she points out. "So when you two head off to Africa, Iâll add to it."
We stick around a while longer before calling up a cab to head back to the flat. Once inside, Edward wraps his arms around me from behind, and I lean back against him. âI canât believe her most days, swear my mumâs totally ridiculous. HoweverâŚâ I turn, hugging him in return and kissing him lightly, âthis has also been a seriously fantastic birthday. Thank you for this whole day, itâsâŚwonderful.â
I smile warmly and kiss her before leaning back.
"It was important to me that i returned in time and iâm glad i managed it.  They night isnât over yet, though and whatever you like, we will do.  I also want to hear more about thisâŚswooning business.  That was fun."
She smacks my chest gently and i laugh.
"Oh come on, humor me.  You know, when i saw you that first time, i thought you were justâŚreally really pretty and i had to work up a bit of nerve to talk to you, make conversation.  I had a crush on you pretty quick.  I know i hovered a bit, i just kept trying to come up with somethingâŚ.cool or smooth to say to flirt with you but all that came out was small talk.  I was a bit nervous some times."
"And I just thought you were--you are--the sweetest guy I've met. I loved stayin' up late and talkin'...which by the way, all I said to Mum was 'there's a guy' and she just assumed I was...tacklin' you or somethin'. Seriously, I was innocent. I didn't even tell her that I thought you were cute, which I did...it was your eyes at first." I blush, though I don't know why. I guess I feel a little silly telling him this.
"You were so kind straightaway, and then I looked up and...all bright blue...then it was the adorable fluff on your head first thing in the morning...that time we just sorta talked in the living room...had me all smitten after that. Oh quit lookin' pleased." I blush deeper, feeling like some schoolgirl.
"So what if I like you right off? I'm allowed to," I smile at him, stretching up to kiss his cheek.Â
