𝐒𝐀𝐋𝐕𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍.

rose’s  maternal  grandfather’s  side  comes  from  predominantly  from  scotland .      they  settled  on  the  east  coast  during  the  civil  war  and  grandpa  mac,   short  for  mcallister,   always  had  exaggerated  stories  to  tell  around  summer  campfires  as  his  grandchildren  were  growing  up  and  visiting  him  in  pennsylvania .      he  would  terrify  the  kids  with  stories  of  a  robed  woman  with  a  ragged  veil  on  a  horse  that  would  approach  the  first  mcallister  family  patriarch  silently  before  riding  off .      always  that  story  about  the  rider  with  her  gauzy  veil  and  a  voice  that  sounded  brittle,   unused,   like   the  grating  wheeze  of  a  rusted  hinge .      the  story  is  never  told  exactly  the  same,   but  it  always  ends  the  same  way :     during  the  days  after  the  rider  visits  great  great  great  grandma  mcallister,   rather  than  grandpa  mcallister,   he  doesn’t  see  her  during  his  night  shifts  at  the  watch  tower  over  the  town  river .      not  until  he  thinks  he  sees  a  boat  in  the  river,   alight  with  a  torch .      he  supposedly  rose  and  moved  to  the  edge,   but  a  noise  startled  him    (   a  stray  union  gunshot ?    the  winny  of  a  rearing  horse ?   ),   and  disturbs  his  balance  enough  that  he  falls  off  the  tower  and  into  the  riverbank  below .      grandpa  mac  with  his  tales  of  a  banshee  that’s  supposedly  followed  the  family  for  generations  since  then,   an  omen  of  death,   or  a  curse .      or   .   .   .   maybe  he’s  just  messing  with  them  all .      rosie  was  never  certain .
