Act I. Memories of the War | Weakness and Peace

One day, only memories remained. Lee Suryeon was prepared for almost everything when, after the war, she finally found Captain Sofiya Irinovskaya's address. Everything except what waited behind the door. But this story began long before that, in a field hospital in the heart of the Soviet-Afghan War, where one woman spent her days saving lives while the other risked losing hers.

This story can be read as a standalone and does not require prior knowledge of The Punisher.

Chapter 40: My Beautiful Angel Has Cold Hands

“Not all scars are left by war, Sofiya. Not all scars remain visible on the skin. But I can understand what kind of pain they can cause, not only to the body…”

“I know enough. I will not look at more than you allow me to. I will not touch more than you allow me to. I will not ask more than you can answer. Anything you allow me… will come from you.”

“I am here. I am beside you…”

Chapter 38: The Shadow of the White Tower

White gloves covered her hands. Immaculate.

Her hands moved with such skill that it was no wonder the gloves did not interfere with her playing. On the contrary, it seemed as though the violin obeyed them precisely because those hands refused to touch the world with bare skin. Sofiya looked closer. Something inside her tightened.

It was her.

Their eyes met.

Chapter 37: The Raven’s Other Side

“You came here five minutes ago, Miss Vladilena.”

“Four.”

“And you are already drawing conclusions?”

“Yes. Would you like me to wait another hour so your mistakes can become more intimate to me? I counted my cigarettes. I have just enough for that.”

“I thought we were doing logistics tonight.”

“We are.”

“In a strip club?”

“Money doesn’t always wear a tie. Sometimes it adores bikinis.”

“Bring her to you? To the White Tower?”

Hyera ran her fingers over the lid of the case.

“Yes… Just do not tell her right away that I am going to lock that little bitch in my office, and that she will not leave until the end of the week.”

Chapter 36: Codename “Vladilena”

“Seriously… What is wrong with all of you? Is Chief Kim the Virgin Mary? Some kind of cult? A little more of this and I’ll start expecting someone to hang an icon of her.”

“The Virgin Mary?”

“What else am I supposed to call it? The moment her name comes up, every man in the Hotel starts looking as if he has remembered his own salvation. I wouldn’t be surprised if this city is where the cult began.”

“No.” He shook his head and leaned a little closer. “Mary doesn’t fit here.”

“If we’re looking for a biblical comparison…” His lips twitched with the dangerous shadow of a smile. “Chief Kim is closer to Lilith.”

Chapter 35: Soldiers Alone. Wild People Scare You

He believed Sofiya Pavlovna was the embodiment of the word courage. But she assured him that, in order to understand the meaning of that word correctly, he ought to look at his own reflection.

And yet, perhaps the Captain’s voice would never have allowed him to remain lonely. For a person who had spent too long returning to the dead, that was already something like salvation.

Sofiya Pavlovna… She was something like salvation.

Chapter 34: While Winter Holds Me by the Throat

For one day, I know, you will come for my soul. And my soul will be darker than the longest night upon this sinful earth.

My friend, my fate, my comrade. Look at me and tell me, do you see death itself in my eyes? Tell me which road I am meant to take. I see trees collapsing, forests burning, animals crying out in pain before they die. And you, my fate? Did you walk that same road just to find me?

Tell me, are we haunted by the same demons?

Chapter 33: Strong Women Have a Bright Future

“Businesswomen rarely carry artillery discipline within them,” Pyotr narrowed his eyes for a moment, recalling something or someone. “You will be glad to meet her, Balalaika. I hope Sasha keeps his promise to arrange a personal meeting with Chief Kim. A woman speaking to a woman always works better, even when there are dozens of armed men standing behind them. How I have lived to see these years… it is beautifully insane. Do you still need time to think, my Balalaika?”

Despite everything, a smile appeared on her lips.

“Afraid I will say no, boss?”

Pyotr did not answer immediately. He did not push, not because he did not want to, but because he understood that she would only agree when she recognized her own interest.
