“This is hands down the worst idea you’ve ever had,” Yolanda says, leveling a stare at Trinity across the coffee table. They’re in Yolanda’s living room, an impromptu ‘girls night’ (Joy had gagged at that) having unfolded post-shift when it became clear the rain wasn’t going to let up enough for drinks in the park.
“No it’s not,” Trinity insists. She knows she’s pushing her luck a little, having already talked her girlfriend into hosting, but Victoria had asked for her help and she was too drunk and too tired to have a better idea. Besides, Trinity was good at selling bad ideas. “Crash was too busy being a childhood prodigy to have any fun in school. She’s never played!”
Victoria buries her head in her hands, embarrassed, while Samira and Mel both pipe up to say they haven’t either.
“See!” Trinity points at them as if it proves anything. “We’d practically be performing a civil service giving these three— wait. Raise your hand if you’ve never played seven minutes in heaven.” She stares in horror as almost everyone— Cassie, Emma, Samira, Mel, Victoria, Baran, and even Yolanda raise their hands.
“What? I was in band,” Joy says when everyone turns to her as her hands stay firmly planted in her lap.
“Me too, kid,” Dana barks out a laugh and takes another sip of her beer. “And I never kiss and tell.”
“The situation is more dire than I thought!” Trinity all but shouts. “We have to play.”
“This is so inappropriate on so many levels,” Baran says. She had taken off her lululemon when she walked in the door, but she looks no more relaxed than when she’s on shift, perched on the edge of the couch cushions. Victoria hadn’t wanted Trinity to invite her (‘she’s our boss’), but Trinity was working on a theory. She needed to test it away from the hospital when everyone’s guards were down just a little.
“Look, I’m not saying anyone has to kiss,” Trinity tries.
“Isn’t that one of the rules?” Mel asks.
“Usually, yeah. But we’re all adults. And coworkers. And some of us,” Trinity says, nodding at Baran and Dana, “are our superiors. So what if we think of it more like team bonding? You get paired with a random coworker for a conversation. And if you kiss instead, well, HR isn’t here.” She wiggles her eyebrows a little, eyes landing on Yolanda.
“If you wanted to make out with me, you could have just asked,” Yolanda says.
“Nope, this isn’t that. Well, it’s a little that, but mostly this is about providing an opportunity to play a game that most of you have never played before.” Trinity looks around the circle, at the half-finished drinks in front of most of them, at their shift-tired faces. She thinks their inhibitions are down just enough.
“Not a word of this leaves this room,” Baran says after a moment. Trinity quirks an eyebrow at her. She hadn’t expected her to be first.
“Okay, fuck it,” Samira says, finishing her beer. “How do we play?”
“Fuck yeah, Mohan!” Trinity says, slapping her thighs in enthusiasm as one by one the group folds.

It takes a few minutes to get organized. Names are hastily written on slips of paper and shoved into a bowl. Some people get up to help themselves to another round of drinks while Trinity and Yolanda spar over what area of the latter’s one-bedroom apartment is best suited to the game. Trinity insists bedroom, and Yolanda refuses to let her coworkers into her space. Eventually, Trinity relents and they settle on the guest half-bath just down the hall. It’s more authentic anyway.
Surprisingly, it is not as awkward as everyone thought it would be. Most of Trinity’s memories of this game are being shoved together with some smelly acne prone boy or too-giggly girl while their classmates crowded around the other side of the door, listening. She had only ever kissed the girls. Playing with this group of people is easier. The party continues in the living room with a reasonable level of hoots and hollers as each couple is paired off.
Cassie and Dana go first, Dana cackling wildly as she grabs Cassie’s hand. The look Victoria shoots Trinity is bordering on crushed, and Trinity realizes she might have fucked up just a little. She thought the goal for the night was to get Crash a kiss, not that Crash wanted to kiss, Cassie. She tries to make up for it by drawing Victoria’s name next. And to her credit, her friend does perk up a little bit when her partner is Joy.
And so it goes. After Victoria and Joy come out, Trinity and Samira go in. Trinity gallantly offers to just talk, but Samira cautiously asks to kiss instead, and Trinity is all too happy to oblige. There’s a polite knock at the door as they sail past minute ten. The party has started to dwindle when they make it back to the living room— Dana and Joy are already gone, Cassie and Victoria are putting on their coats. Trinity catches what looks like Cassie sneakily grabbing Victoria’s ass and marks the night a success after all. On that front, at least.
Really, the only pairing Trinity doesn’t expect to kiss are Emma and Mel, but exactly seven minutes after the door shuts, they both emerge a little flushed, bright eyes looking everywhere but each other. Emma barely pauses to say goodbye before she leaves the apartment, and Samira goes with her to make sure she’s okay.
“Well, should we get this over with?” Yolanda asks Baran when she realizes they’re the only two left.
“I suppose it’s better you than one of my actual subordinates,” Baran says, standing and offering a hand to Yolanda. Trinity whoops as they go, laughing at the middle finger Yolanda throws over her shoulder without looking.
“Mel, you should probably get going,” Trinity says once the bathroom door shuts.
“Oh, I don’t mind waiting,” Mel says. “Dr. Al-Hashimi shouldn’t have to walk out alone just because she got picked last.”
“Sweet, sweet Mel.” Trinity starts ushering her to the door, helping her into her coat. “If things are going the way I think they’re going, the way I planned for them to go, then Dr. Al-Hashimi won’t be leaving until morning.”
Trinity can’t help but laugh at her a little, opening the door. “Yes, girlfriends, but also, I’ve been trying to get Yolanda to admit her crush for months.”
“Oh,” Mel says, though Trinity can tell she doesn’t fully get it, even as she’s ushered out into the apartment hall. “What are you going to do?”
“Me? I’m going to go get in the middle,” she says with a wink, before shutting the door in Mel’s face.
“I gotta say, Dr. Al-Hashimi,” Yolanda says as the bathroom door clicks shut behind them, “I didn’t exactly peg you as the type to go for this sort of thing.”
Baran barely conceals a roll of her eyes as she hops up to sit on the edge of the counter. “And what sort of type is that?”
“Juvenile,” Yolanda says, raising an eyebrow. She leans against the wall opposite Baran, though she could reach out and touch her if she wanted— the bathroom is tiny. Baran barks out a laugh at her answer, but doesn’t say anything else, so Yolanda tries again. “HR nightmare, then,” she settles on finally.
“Dr. Garcia, this is merely a conversation between colleagues,” Baran quotes Trinity’s words from earlier in the evening, and there’s a twinkle in her eye that makes Yolanda think she isn’t serious.
“Is it?” Yolanda asks, sounding far more confident than she feels. She’s surprised to find that now they’re away from the scrutinizing eyes of the rest of the party, she’s a little intimidated. Trinity being intimidated by Baran, Trinity’s crush on Baran makes sense— Yolanda had told her girlfriend as much. She just wasn’t expecting to find that she herself also might like the attending. Just a little bit.
“Do you want it to be?”
And there’s that twinkle again, and part of Yolanda’s stomach drops, and there’s not really enough air behind her voice when she says, “No.”
“Good,” Baran laughs, and Yolanda is so distracted watching other woman’s tongue dart out and lick her bottom lip that she doesn’t notice her lean forward to hook a finger through her belt loop until she’s being pulled to slot between Baran’s legs. A moment later Baran’s hand is resting on the side of Yolanda’s neck, fingers brushing lightly against the hair just behind her ear in a way that makes her shiver.
And for as off-kilter as the last few minutes have made Yolanda feel, this she knows how to do. Knows how to kiss a beautiful woman when one is right in front of her. So her hands settle on Baran’s hips and she tilts her head just a little before bringing their lips together.
They don’t crash together, and Yolanda might have been expecting urgency, given their limited time, but there isn’t any. There is heat, but Baran kisses her like she’s expecting them to kiss again. Like she knows this won’t be the last time. The thought settles something inside of her. The tantalizing unnamed promise of more.
Yolanda parts her lips and whines into Baran’s mouth (just a little, she’ll insist later), and the hand that’s on her neck slides back to tangle in her hair. Their tongues tangle together and then Baran’s teeth are nipping at Yolanda’s bottom lip and she’s using her hands on Baran’s waist to pull them closer together until there’s not really any space between them at all.
What infuriates Yolanda, somewhere in the back of her mind, is that Baran is a great kisser. She’s used to Trinity (a good kisser in her own right) who will match Yolanda’s pace and bite back and start things but who is ultimately so easy. Who will let Yolanda do what she wants and beg while she does it.
Baran is not easy. She’s not hard, either, she’s not taking total control, but she’s not giving in. For as many movements as Yolanda directs— hands slipping from her waist to grab Baran’s ass, pulling her to the edge of the counter to align Baran’s center with Yolanda’s abs— Baran is matching her. Hooks her legs together behind Yolanda’s back, uses her hand in Yolanda’s hair to move her head where she wants it.
So Yolanda starts playing a game with herself. Starts searching for the thing that will get Baran to finally give in. The exact right combination of lips and teeth and tongue that will turn her more into a putty that Yolanda knows what to do with.
She thinks she’s won when Baran allows her to nudge her nose under her jaw, when Baran tilts her head back to give Yolanda better access to kiss and lick and bite along her neck. And she really thinks she’s won when, just behind Baran’s ear, just below her hairline, Yolanda sucks the tiniest of marks and Baran gasps and tightens her grip in Yolanda’s hair.
Yolanda is pulled off before she can find another place to mark. “Careful,” Baran says when there’s a few inches of space between them. Yolanda smirks and rolls her eyes, because even though Baran’s eyes narrow and her grip is firm, she looks a little wrecked. Lips swollen and shining. Chest rising and falling more rapidly than it had been before. They take a breath, two, before Baran’s hand slips down to curl around the side of Yolanda’s neck and the surgeon dives back in.
Not one to back down with a win so close, she returns right back to the spot she had been before and sucks hard, aiming to turn the small mark into a much bigger one.
Instead she’s shoved back, Baran’s hands on her neck and shoulder sending her all the way across the small space of the bathroom. Baran follows close behind, leaning into Yolanda to press her firmly against the wall, using the change of position to shift her hand to grip Yolanda’s jaw.
Yolanda’s well and truly lost her game when her head is tipped back and Baran takes her turn, lips descending upon her neck. It’s all teeth and spit, and Yolanda has to bite her lip to hold back a moan as Baran leaves behind marks much larger and much more visible than Yolanda had intended to leave on Baran. Distantly, she hears a door shut, and she’s reminded of the party, reminded that Trinity is out there waiting for her. Realizes that Trinity will see what Baran has done, is doing, to her.
The thought has her gripping Baran’s hips tighter, pulling her closer and trying to chase some friction against the leg slotted between her own. But Baran must have heard the door, too, because soon she’s slowing, lips finding their way back to Yolanda’s for a long moment before finally pulling back. And Yolanda can’t help it, she whines at the loss of contact, hips stuttering to a stop, utterly lost in the woman in front of her.
“Shhh,” Baran breathes, running her thumb along Yolanda’s bottom lip. She doesn’t seem surprised when the surgeon tries to take it into her mouth, hips rolling subconsciously. “Later,” Baran says, leaning forward to breathe the promise right into Yolanda’s ear before pushing off entirely and reestablishing the distance this whole thing had began with.
Baran pauses to smooth her shirt and fluff her curls, but it’s only a second until she’s opening the door and slipping back into the hall. Yolanda is left alone to take shuddering breaths and try to collect herself, dizzy on ideas of more and later, when she hears Trinity’s voice drift through the cracked open bathroom door.
“So, how was my girlfriend? Put you through your paces?” Trinity asks Baran, and Yolanda can’t let her be the one to answer, can’t let her keep having the upper hand, so she wrenches the door open the rest of the way and moves down the hall in half as many steps as it usually takes her. She makes it just as Baran opens her mouth, places a hand on the small of the other woman’s back to stop her.
The cocky answer Yolanda had started dies on her lips when she sees Trinity’s eyes land on her neck. She had only gotten a brief glance in the mirror before leaving the bathroom, but she knows it’s bad. Way worse than when she and Trinity had started dating and had spent weeks sneaking into supply closets at work. “Oh,” Trinity says, eyes sliding slowly back to Baran. “Other way around then.”
Yolanda is more thankful than she’s ever been that the rest of the party has cleared out, because when Baran turns to her and smirks, she does the most embarrassing thing she’s ever done and blushes.
“Wow,” Trinity adds, and Yolanda can’t quite bring herself to meet her girlfriend’s eye as she leaves Baran’s side to flop down on the couch next to her.
“I should get going,” Baran says, starting to move towards the door, but stops when both Trinity and Yolanda start speaking in unison.
“No fair,” Trinity says.
“You said later,” Yolanda adds just a second later, purposefully ignoring how pathetic they both sound.
“No fair?” Baran asks, raising an eyebrow at Trinity.
“You’re gonna leave my girlfriend looking like this,” Trinity gestures vaguely at Yolanda’s neck and she blushes again. “But I don’t get anything?”
“You definitely got to make out with Samira,” Yolanda points out, earning an elbow to her ribs.
“You want something from me?” Baran asks, still halfway between the couch and the door, but with the whole of her attention turned on Trinity.
“Yes,” Trinity says. “Please,” she adds when Baran doesn’t say anything and instead just looks at her expectantly. Easy, Yolanda thinks to herself, pleased to not be the only one to have folded tonight.
“Since you asked nicely.” Baran crosses to the couch then, and drops down to straddle Trinity’s lap, gently pushing Yolanda a little farther away to make room for her knee on the cushion. “Hands to yourself,” she directs when Trinity’s hands try to settle on her hips, and Yolanda watches with a mix of shock and pride as her girlfriend dutifully places her hands back at her sides.
It’s a mirror of what happened before to Yolanda, Baran placing a firm hand on Trinity’s jaw and tipping her head back. There’s a part of Yolanda that expects to feel jealous, seeing all the attention that was focused on her just few minutes ago now directed somewhere else, but instead she’s totally distracted by how good they look together. Trinity’s wearing a hazy, fucked out expression that Yolanda knows and loves as she watches the woman above her. Baran is harder to read, but as she leans down to press her lips to Trinity’s neck, Yolanda catches just the slightest hitch in Baran’s breath, feels just the smallest twitch where Baran’s leg is pressed against her own.
It’s over almost as quickly as it began, Baran sucking one, two, three marks into Trinity’s neck before sitting back and moving to get off the couch.
“You said later,” Yolanda repeats her earlier complaint, trying and failing to catch Baran’s wrist as she stands and restarts her path to the door.
Baran just laughs while she puts on her shoes. “Right now isn’t exactly later,” she says. “I have a babysitter who’s stayed far too late already. Thank you both for a lovely evening.” There’s the slightest glint in her eye.
She shrugs into her coat then, but pauses with her hand on the door when Yolanda speaks, still glued to her spot on the couch. “You mean it though, right? Later?”
“I really do,” Baran says, and for just a moment, all of the bravado of the night is gone and she sounds incredibly, impossibly soft. “Goodnight,” she adds with a wink, and then she is gone.
They’re quiet for a long moment.
“Ho-ly shit,” Trinity says after a while, adding a whistle to emphasize her point.
“Holy shit,” Yolanda agrees, and then they’re laughing.
It’s a little loud, and a little euphoric, and it makes Yolanda’s cheeks hurt, but when they finally come down, Trinity’s head is resting on her shoulder and their hands are tangled together on her lap. It’s warm and familiar and so sweet it makes Yolanda’s teeth hurt.
“She didn’t even kiss me,” Trinity says, another incredulous giggle escaping her lips. “Just gave me a bunch of hickeys and left.”
“At least yours you can mostly hide under your scrubs tomorrow.” Yolanda turns to press a kiss to the top of her head as a small consolation prize. “I look like I got mauled by a bear.”
“You do,” Trinity says, and then they’re laughing again and Yolanda is coming to the new but not unwelcome conclusion that she is very much in love with the woman sitting next to her.

except she doesn’t want yolanda to see ted when they start hooking up, so ted goes in her nightstand and comes out on nights where she’s the only one in the bed
then her and yolanda fall into an actual relationship, the sort that when yolanda’s building has no water, trinity doesn’t think twice before chucking yolanda her apartment keys at the end of a shift, tells her she’ll meet her there once she’s all caught up with her own work
doesn’t really think much of it, they were supposed to be staying the night at yolanda’s but it is what it is. finally gets home herself and yolanda is already in bed, sat against the headboard reading a book. and trinity realises that she’d left ted out that morning, obviously not expecting her girlfriend to be staying over.
but the surgeon has him propped up against trinity’s pillows, tucked under the covers so only his little face is peeking out and trinity embarrassingly finds herself tearing up.

how Trinity, Yolanda, and Baran see past their baggage and let themselves love and be loved

when Baran and Yolanda had a fling years ago they clashed constantly, always arguing and snapping at each other. they couldnt set aside their pride long enough to admit their feelings and see eye to eye
Yolanda and Trinity who had a 10 month situationship despite both wanting more because theyre terrible at communicating and opening up. Yolanda's instinct is fight, to push and snarl and be meaner than she means to, whereas Trinity's is flight, to run as far and fast as she can and hide until everyone forgets she ever existed at all. avoidance becomes a crutch
Baran and Trinity who push and pull in opposite measures. Baran recognizes the turmoil in Trinity but is unable to reach her, she is new and in a position of power over Trinity, and she cant find a way past the younger woman's walls. Trinity who has been taken advantage of and betrayed by authority figures all her life, but still feels deep kinship and safety with Baran but is scared to trust it
but against all odds and against their better judgement, the three of them start to develop (or rekindle) feelings for each other. it starts as the elder two fighting over Trinity, spurred on by their past and their baggage, but Trinity outright refuses to choose between them and sour whatever dynamic they all have left. shes afraid to choose wrong and ruin any chance any of them have at being happy, even if it excludes her, and she couldn't live with the guilt of that
Baran and Yolanda still bicker and snap at each other, teeth bared, but their mutual care for Trinity eases their jagged edges and they finally let themselves open up the way they should have years ago. their similarities always scared them, in spite of their overwhelming respect and admiration for each other, because they knew that on their own they could never meet in the middle. Trinity becomes their middle ground.
Trinity and Yolanda are still absolutely terrible at communicating with each other, and the stress and mistrust from their situationship still hangs heavy. Baran plays mediator, she shows them what a well adjusted adult actually looks like. she uses her skills and influence as a mentor to encourage them to open up. Baran brings even footing and stability to their relationship.
Trinity and Baran have a more serious power dynamic in place, and it makes things even trickier to navigate. Trinity, with her overwhelming mommy issues, is wary of Baran's easy praise and gentleness. she has never learned how to accept something like that, and Baran isn't sure how to reach her. Yolanda is the only one who knows them both well enough to understand where the miscommunication is, where the friction comes from. she knows exactly what buttons to push and what sharp edges to file down to make things glide smoother. Yolanda is familiar with both of them, she is analytical and knows how to use those skills for the better.
the three of them meet at Yolanda's apartment, where Trinity forces Baran and Yolanda to talk their shit out before either of them get a shot at her, bc she refuses to choose. she locks herself in Yolanda's bedroom for the night, expecting the other two to fight until the little hours. when she wakes up the next morning, Yolanda and Baran are cuddled together on the couch, sound asleep, holding each other so tenderly. turns out they actually talked through their shit, like mature adults, for the first time ever. they realized that their feelings for each other never really went away, but they both feel the same way about Trinity. that's how their relationship starts, and they spend their entire weekend off talking through what this relationship is going to look like. (Trinity and Yolanda HATE IT so bad, but Baran forces them to sit down and go through it. Trinity closes up, Yolanda mocks the entire thing, but Baran is patient and kind while still being firm and encouraging) they agree not to make anything official with titles yet, but they are exclusive
Baran decides that they absolutely will not have sex until they fully confirm what this relationship is and what it means. Trinity thinks she might die when she hears this, and Yolanda genuinely doesn't believe it at first, but every time they try to initiate something Baran shuts it down immediately. she says that hiding behind sex is what soured their relationships with each other to begin with, and if they are "going to take this seriously this time, then we can't let sex get in the way". she tells them that if they want to commit to a relationship, then they all need to be willing to do it together. all or nothing, she doesn't want one without the other. but there's more to think of here, shes got a kid and an ex wife, and if Yolanda and Trinity want to be in Baran's life then they need to understand and accept what it means that Baran is a mother first. they talk it out together, Trinity and Yolanda, and think about it on their own. when they come to Baran's townhouse to tell her their decision, that yes they are fully committed to her and her family, that they want to be her girlfriends, Baran tells them that she loves them. Trinity's heart drops through her ass when Baran says that, but she promised to work on letting herself be loved and cared for, so even though she's not ready to say it back she is ready to let Baran in. Yolanda shouts "oh fuck you!" but they all know she doesn't really mean it, it lacks all the typical bite her insults usually carry. this time her voice is wispy, not commanding, and she turns away from them to hide her tears. Trinity just cuddles into Baran's side and lets her girlfriend (!) take care of the situation. Baran is patient, so patient, and coaxes Yolanda back into their arms. they don't have sex that night but they do share Baran's king sized bed and finally find true comfort in the warmth and safety of each others' presence. (they fuck nasty the next morning, don't worry)
Yolanda is middle spoon for the start of the night, raw and vulnerable after Baran's confession. she's never had anyone love her before, not like that, not admit it, and she had convinced herself long ago that she was unlovable and unworthy. Trinity and Baran hold her and help her start to unlearn that. eventually she and Trinity switch positions, the two of them move constantly their sleep and Yolanda snores like a lawn mower, meanwhile Baran sleeps completely still and doesn't move a muscle. her girlfriends shift and toss and turn around her and she just stays there on the edge of the mess until one or both of them pulls her in to hold or be held. Trinity is especially fond of burying her face in the hollow of Baran's throat while Yolanda spoons her from behind, out of the three of them she is the one who is constantly complaining of being cold, so being cuddled in between the elder women is a non-negotiable
Baran who wakes up early as fuck for pilates and to make breakfast and tea for them, Yolanda who goes on a five mile run every morning. they each drop a kiss on Trinity's forehead when they leave the bed, but quickly learn that one of them HAS to stay behind so that their youngest girlfriend doesn't wake up alone and cold and cranky. Trinity who will sleep in until the afternoon if no one wakes her
each of them bringing their own cultural dishes and flavors together for date nights when they cook together, creating new hybrids and fusions and experimenting in the kitchen (Dennis benefits from this the most)
Yolanda playing soccer with Baran's son while Trinity teaches him how to do cartwheels and walk on his hands. she was spotting him for a backflip one day when Yolanda freaked out and told them to cut it out before they all had to play doctor on their day off (Baran teases her MERCILESSLY about Yolanda being so much more worried over Baran's kid getting hurt than Baran was. deep down she is so moved by her care, but she's not going to admit that until she's had her full of teasing the surgeon)
