“I’m happy for you, that’s great news.” The blond admits while looking up at his boyfriend from his position on the mattress. It reminds him of when his own family adopted Ray to be one of them. The Guthrie family has a lot of love to give and maybe the Summers family Is the same way. He doesn’t really know a lot about them aside from that he really looks up to Scott for having similar powers to his own. He sees the other Summers kid around but that one is so serious and working too much. All about training or missions it seems. “Rory Summers has a good ring to it.”

Being on top of Jeb, he could a reflection of himself smiling down at his boyfriend. The boy who was so familiar to him, from his body, to the softness of his skin, and the rough callouses on his hands from hard labor. The way his skin was almost permanently sun kissed, and how his blonde locks always curled at the tips when he came out of the shower. Rory knew there were a lot of things he noticed about Jeb, things that were only his to memorize and no one else’s. This was his Jeb, his best friend, the man that made him fall in love with that sweeter than honey southern twang.

The car he’d sent for Rory would eventually bring him to a private dock. Situated at the end was a large boat, lit up against the backdrop of the dark sky. Music played loudly and people were already milling around the deck with drinks. Quentin came striding toward the car holding what appeared to be a zipped bag from some dry cleaner, which he shoved through the window as soon as he reached the door. 

“Put that on and come up. We’re taking off in five minutes.”

Jebediah doesn’t have experience with the holiday in the way other people do … never having a significant other when it comes around each year. He doesn’t let that bother him but also firmly believes that you don’t need to spend a fortune to have a good time. The blond is a simple man, not needing anything luxurious to be happy. Rory was his best friend first and should know that but that just means if Jeb is spoiled then it means that much more. “Ah do like personalized dates. They’re more memorable that way, ya know?” He smiles and winks back at the other while a blush begins creeping it’s way onto his cheeks. Especially when his mind pieces together what exactly Rory has been practicing. He’s going to cook for them? Nobody has ever done that aside from his mother and maybe Melody sometimes but they’re family. Which makes it different. “Ah’m sure whatever you’re cookin’ in that kitchen will be delicious. Did ya really ruin counters? Oh, babe …” He smiles fondly before kissing him again. He never gets enough of this he’ll have to admit. “Ah’m not goin’ t’talk your ear off about insects while we’re plannin’ our valentines day together.” He doesn’t think that’s really romantic to most people but apparently Rory is into it. “Ah’ll keep goin’ if you really want me ta.” No judgment there. He’s moved over to the bed, sitting down on the edge of the mattress. “Ah like the sound of that … everyday like valentines is real cute.”

Those beautiful blonde locks that caught him by surprise the first time they met, that southern twang that felt like the most beautiful melody he’d ever heard, and of course that same guy who’d be his roommate would be his best friend, and now his boyfriend. Rory knows that Jeb’s family knew of hardship and struggle, especially after they lost their dad, everybody else had to begin pulling their weight and help out. Love, that’s what it was that kept them all going, Rory could see it from the moment he surprised his boyfriend with a family visit. “Personalized dates, are what you’re gonna get from now on. Whenever you’re not busy doing all that braniac stuff that is. Jeb, you do know that any date with you is memorable. I still think about the way you held me in that closet during seven minutes in heaven. Which felt more like 2 minutes cause I wanted to keep going,” A blush was inevitable once he realized that Jeb understood what he was trying to tell him, and suddenly the brazen and bold became bashful. “I really dinked them so much I was forced to replace and fix them all luckily we have the wood and a few people helped me out with their powers. But I got a stern scolding about letting out my anger like that. But I just can’t help it you know, whenever I get frustrated I just kick.” he huffed out, crossing his arms, before chuckling. “That stuff’s pretty cool, I don’t really know what you’re going to do with bugs, but I think your science-y brain is kind of amazing.” Pressing a kiss on his cheeks, he pressed Jeb down onto the mattress. “Guess what, you may now refer to me as Rory Summers, since Scott is now officially...my dad.”

[txt - Rory:] there’s a tab running in the car, pregame before you get here so you don’t bore me to death. 

[txt - Q-Ball:] it’s kinda hard to miss tbh

[txt - Q-Ball:] idk who’s been lying to you

[txt - Rory:] i have a girlfriend, energizer bunny

[txt - Rory:] no. i already bought something. 

[txt - Rory:] don’t know if you’ll like it but i do so everybody wins. 

[txt - Q-Ball:] yes and?? still a bottom

[txt - Q-Ball:] wow, you really thought of everything

Scott was quiet, though the corner of his mouth twitched into a little smile. He wasn’t sure that he deserved the kind of love or devotion that he got from Rory or from Nathan, but it wasn’t as if it was something he would reject, either. He’d spent the first part of his life wishing for a family of his own, shuttled around foster care and group homes and then…Jack Winters…He’d found it in spades. The X-Men, Alex, Jean, Emma, his children…it was all more than that skinny teenager could have ever hoped for. 

“So you’re sure you’ve thought this through? This is really what you want?”

[txt - Rory:] i hope you don’t look like a bum. there’s a dress code. 

[txt - Q-Ball:] SILENCE BOTTOM!

[txt - Q-Ball:] leave me be, he’s my guy so he’s perfect

Between managing the school, teaching, and the teams he’d reorganized, Scott (as always) had little free time. If anyone needed to find him, they had few options besides exactly what Rory was doing - sitting in his office and waiting. He’d already said ‘just one more minute’ about five times, as he finished with some form on his desk, so the restless shifting around wouldn’t have surprised him even if Rory had nothing at all to talk about. Scott was used to being boring.

Once he was finally able to give him his attention, he was surprised by the request. “You’re more than your name, Rory.” It wasn’t that he was opposed to what he was asking. It wasn’t even that he was going to say no. But before he accepted outright, he had to know it wasn’t being done for the wrong reasons. “You could make it into something better just because you have it.”

[txt - Q-Ball:] definitely not your twink ass,  but my boyfriend jeb guthrie

Jebediah was about to call that kidnapping but realizes that might not be the case since it’s their own room. His joke is ruined and doesn’t bother thinking of a word that could make more sense in this context. He doesn’t mind being teased a little, that was always the kind of friendship that they had together so naturally it lingered when they started dating. “Stayin’ in? Ah like that idea … only th’ two of us?” Jeb has no problems with crowds and other people —  a charismatic type but for something special like Valentines day, he wants it to just be the two of them. “Ah like surprises. Are we dressin’ fancy?” He doesn’t even own a tie, not here anyway. He used to wear one to church back home but that wasn’t something the blond brought with him to Star City. “Somethin’ you want t’tell me? Ah hope that ah’m not in trouble.” Swiftly Jeb feels himself dragged down the hall to their room, soon as the door closes he’s pinned to the wall. He wraps his arms around Rory’s neck to pull him against him while they kiss. “Hey, you’re smart too. Ah’ll always talk smart ta you. Ah’ve been doin’ some research on insects recently for mah boss. Ah’m proud ta be a nerd … learning is fun!” His robotic project is coming along well too, starting to look like something as it sits on his desk. 

Rory figured it was slightly like kidnapping but just for the day of love that didn’t really matter, all that mattered was making sure Jeb knew how much he cared for him. “Yup, everybody likes to spend loads of money for this day but I figured I’d do everything myself instead. That way it’s like more personal right? It’s what I figured anyway.” he mused. “Nah, we don’t need to do anything like that, plus I like you much better with your shirt off,” Rory said with a wink before thinking that might’ve sounded slightly inappropriate, but he didn’t make much of a fuss about it. “Been practicing in the kitchen just for this day, might’ve kicked a few counters and I might’ve been forced to fix them...” the embarrassment in his tone and the rosy color on his cheeks gave away to the sweet and silly boy that lied underneath all the anger. “Not in trouble, scouts honor,” Rory promised. The feel of Jeb’s lips would always be his favorite thing, just like his favorite place would always be in his best friend’s arms. “Shit, you keep talking like that I might just give you the valentine’s day surprise right now, hottest nerd in history.” he blew out a whistle, grinning as he pulled him towards the bed. “Jeb,” he mumbled voice quitting down a little bit. “I do really love you, you know that, right? So I just thought of something, let’s treat everyday together as if it were valentines.”

“Luckily for you ah don’t have any plans on that day.” Jebediah smiles while looking over at Rory. He nudges him back while they walked into the hallway and merged with the small crowd of people that left other classrooms. “Ah’d love ta be your valentine and go out with ya … planning somethin’ special?” The blond asks curiously, never been in a relationship on the holiday before. “Ah’ll keep mah projects out of mah hands for th’ entire day. Ah promise.” He smiles as he looks at his boyfriend while they make their plans.

“Better not cause I was about to hog tie you and keep you in the room.” Rory teased, still finding it so easy to talk like this with Jeb. To not feel a torrent of endless rage just ushering him to do stupid things was probably the best thing that could happen to him, and to the school walls. “We’re actually going to be staying in for this one, I got something special planned out, but it’ll all happen in our room.” he said wiggling his brows at the other man. “Besides, there’s something I wanted to tell you nerd,” Rory chuckled, taking his boyfriend’s hand and rushing them to their room where he immediately pressed him against the wall, their lips meeting swiftly. “Can’t believe I got so lucky to be dating my best friend, he’s a fucking smarty pants nerd though, which I gotta admit it’s kinda hot. I love when you talk all smart to me, do I get it? No, but I like the way your lips move. When you work on robotronic and shit like that, I find it cool.”

“So, do you think you’ll be free on the 14th?” Rory asked the blonde next to him, nudging him slightly as they walked into the hallway after class. “Cause I think someone was thinking of asking you out or being like a valentine’s or some shit like that. Don’t really know how valentine’s supposed to go since I’ve never had one. But you better not be working on a project or I’ll just replace everything you own in our room with carrots.”

“So, do you think you’ll be free on the 14th?” Rory asked the blonde next to him, nudging him slightly as they walked into the hallway after class. “Cause I think someone was thinking of asking you out or being like a valentine’s or some shit like that. “I’ll give you one cent.” It wasn’t as if Rory was the first one to implore him to be included in the ‘action’ and he wasn’t the first one that Scott had been hesitant to allow, either. He didn’t want that for any of them, and the eagerness to do it wasn’t something he liked to see, either. He understood the frustration that it caused it, and he was certainly not unfamiliar with the feeling of helplessness and anger that they’d all experienced, but he was still loathe to accept that as the case.

Ultimately, he did and would always do what was necessary. They rarely had a choice. The X-Men and their students fought because there wasn’t really an option, at the end of the day. All he could do was prepare them, train them, give them all the tools at his disposal to stay as safe as they could be. Even those were too often not enough. Could Rory really blame him for not wanting to expediate the process? Maybe. He was young. Youth so often went hand in hand with the feeling of invincibility and determination.

He watched as Rory took the hit. His voice rang out through the intercom a second later. “You can’t put all your attention one place. Not when you’re alone. Vigilance is the only thing that’s going to protect you. Keep moving.” He didn’t pause the program to let Rory recover; if he wanted to prove that he could keep up in the field, then he was going to have to do exactly that.  

Rory knew this training was about more than just testing the limits of his powers, it had to be about how he could utilize them in situations where he was a disadvantage. He understood that, but sometimes it wasn’t as easy to see the big picture when you were in the heat of things. Probably one of the reasons Scott made this program and had set it up for him to train, so he could learn, adapt, grow with all the changing threats that they were going to have to face eventually. Now that he was hit and his dad’s voice could be heard in the room, he groaned, before jumping back onto his feet. 

He looked at all of the things that were attacking him and while he was running he picked up on their weak spots. With his hearing he could tell who was going to fire first, and just where he needed to jump to dodge. Now all he could do was take in a breath and hope this plan would work. Increasing his momentum slightly he swerved and slid between all of his obstacles, kicking them all in specific places before he made his way onto the next one. Using their patters and line of sight in tandem with his kicks to change at just who they were shooting at, making them hit each other and break thanks to him weakening them by hitting their weak spots.
