As we wrap up a year of #School, Our study of #antiquities has landed us in the Roman empire for much of March and April. The result? We get to do all the fun history #projects! Today, we made scutums, The large rectangular shields that #Roman soldiers used when they marched into battle. The SPQR, stands for āSenatus Populusque Romanus,ā or āthe Senate and the people of Rome.ā We made sure that it, and a #cross, was emblazoned on the shield to give the troop something to stand for and defend. Each of the elementary students was a #Centurion, while one of the Latin II students stepped in as #Imperator to inspect and see if they were #BattleReady. The rest of the Latin II class, plus a few others, became the ābarbarian hordesā and pelted the XXIV Legion Fulminata with stones, sticks, basketballs, and empty cans. Meanwhile, the long-suffering imperator tried to get his troops in marching order so they could execute a #testudo maneuver to deflect the attack. One of the best hands-on activities weāve done all year! Even better that we were able to pull in some of the older students to make it happen. This is #Homeschool education at its best.
