Today, we presented our final design for the Q2 Spaces of Display course. The presentation consisted of an A0 poster, scale models and booklets.

Today, Beersnielsen hosted a lightworkshop in the exhibition space at the A.E. faculty. They brought all kinds of light fixtures with them and shared their experience and knowledge on lighting design. There was time to experiment with lighting in a way that fits with our own exhibition design. I was very fascinated by the sample box by Acolyte of LED strips and fixtures they brought, as I want to integrate LED lights into the shelves on which the objects will be displayed. In my final design, I choose to use one of these Acolyte fixtures.

Samples/materials

Today, we held our midterm presentations. I made these four A3's, showing the (inspiration for the) design of the shelving system. I also included research on the different materials used.

We discussed our research together with Marieke and Paul during the workshop. Afterwards, we could start on making our own material passport.

The samples really helped me decide on the colour and material of the foil, which I also incorporated in the preperations for making the material passport.

During week 2.2, I worked on developing the design for the shelves. I am going to use aluminium to make the shelves, so I did research on the production process and recycling of aluminium. I studied the shape of the shelves by folding paper sheets in different shapes to create stability. I ended up with a design, which I sketched above. I will develop these shelves and the steel wiring the upcoming days.

During the tutoring session today, we talked about the 1:25 and 1:2 drawings I prepared (up top). We discussed some of the future changes to be made to the display system, as well as the use of materials. We drew up some sketches, which I will use to continue my design process.

Today, I visited the Lakenhal museum in Leiden, together with a few fellow students. We looked at the current exhibtions as well as the permanent exhibitions. The building was beautifully renovated and I personally loved how they combined the old character of the building with modern materials and expression. The wooden chests of drawers used in the exhibitions fit perfectly with the origional materials of the building, but are of a sleek and modern design. I also enjoyed the interactivity of being able to open the drawers yourself.

After visiting the LAC, we went to the Kazerne in Eindhoven. We had an amazing lunch together. After that, we got a tour through the current exhibition of the Kazerne. I loved the sheer, multicolor curtains they used in the exhibition space. After visiting the exposition, we attended a workshop on light by Modular Lighting. The cherry on top: my group won the lighting design competition!

Today, we visited the LAC of Philips in Eindhoven. We got a tour through the center and their different experience rooms. The tour gave us an understanding of different light solutions, light intensities and light colors. I personally loved gaining knowledge on the relationship between light and color, on which I took a bunch of notes during the tour. I also liked the ‘supermarket’ and ‘fashion store’, which illustrated how light can be used to draw attention to items and how light changes the atmosphere of a store.

Today, I visited the Best of AFFR 2024. I watched the four 'best' movies of the film festival. Personally, I was most enthousiastic about the first two movies. 'We start with the things we find' was about re-using shipping containers into housing solutions. The second one, 'Charlotte's Castle', was about an old building in Toronto bought by Dutch investors. They showed the rivalry between the investors and the inhabitants.

Today, I visited the Dior exhibition in Kunstmuseum Den Haag. I am really into fashion, so I loved viewing the iconic designs on display. The exhibition shows and tells the originating of the brand Dior and it's first influential collections. It also shows the influences of the later creative directors of the brand. They especially focused on the current, creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri, who combines the classic Dior approach to fashion with a modern and feminist touch.
