I completely understand where you are coming from… however I have a question. Is me using AI purely for my own private entertainment with no intention of ever sharing what is generated, wrong or theft?

A lot of the discourse around AI focuses on individual choice and use of Chat GPT, which makes sense because fandom always tends to focus on individual consumption — by engaging with X you're choosing to associate yourself with it, etc.

But systemic and institutional problems are way more complex than that. The problem with generative AI isn't that every person who uses it is stealing, it's that the technology itself only exists through theft, as the makers scraped the internet and downloaded everything on LibGen to teach it to speak like a human. The problem with generative AI isn't that your request personally wasted a bottle of water, it's that this is an industry that pollutes massively, uses an inordinate amount of water and electricity, and is currently putting people out of work — but is completely and utterly unnecessary and largely unwanted, and is only achieving the apparent success it's currently managing because it's being foisted on pretty much everyone.

I don't know if anyone has talked about this, but lately this has been happening in other fandoms too. There'll be these bot accounts that straight up steals people's posts and adds "expand" "read more" "continue" as a link in the end of the post - DON'T CLICK ON THAT, it's most likely a malware or something of the like.

so if you see a post like this: no profile picture, something that looks reposted (I've seen this happening to artists too) and a link at the end, even if the post has tags, that's a bot. Block and report it.
