Thinking back on it now, the worst thing about the Odyssey wasnāt the lack of Gods, or the removal of the Wedding Bed challenge and the Nobody scene, or just the general lack of Odysseusās hubris, or the removal of Odysseusās motherā¦.

Instead of the new dogshit Odyssey film you should watch Iphigenia (1977). Itās made by actual Greek people and focuses on a mother-daughter relationship to explore how women are sacrificed by powerful men in times of war. Also the main actress has the face of an angel š the whole movie is available on YT with English subtitles.

The movie was fine. I liked it! Iād give it a 7.5 or an 8/10, but I had someā¦gripesā¦maybe?
So I wanna clarify that I havenāt fully read the Odyssey. I keep trying, but the translation I own genuinely frustrates me to no end. I have a decent understanding of it, but my most recent experience with it has been Epic The Musical. I understand that Epic is NOT a perfect adaptation and has taken major creative liberties. I am not approaching this in a way of comparison. ALSO, I am bad at formulating my ideas into words. I have all these big thoughts about the movie but i canāt put them all into wordsā¦yikes!

Now, one thing I really wanted to see were the Gods. I was really looking forward to seeing Poseidon or Hermes! It didnāt even have to be THE gods, it couldāve been animalistic interpretations of them for all I care (ex. A hawk flying overhead at the sacking of Troy), but I wouldāve liked to see something. I wasnāt to thrilled that we only got Athena. I was hoping for something a little more. I understand that Athena was supposed to represent Odysseusās guilt, but they also couldāve done that with other gods (ex. Have the gods be represented through the victims of Troy.) i canāt remember if the gods were super present in the original story, but I wouldāve liked something.
Also! I wouldāve liked if Odysseus had a bigger hubris. He had one in the movie, sure. But I wouldāve preferred one that was more noticeable (where did the nobody scene go, Nolanā¦). I donāt really know how I would expand on thisā¦but it wouldāve been cool methinksā¦.
Whereās the olive tree bed, Nolan. Where did it go. Where did the important tree bed go. Donāt tell me youāve misplaced it. Iāll bite you.
Nitpickyā¦but I wish they made Iphigenia an adult like she was in her play. Idk, maybe because itās the story Iām more used to, but it always made it more tragic for me.
(also Iāve never been more disappointed of not seeing a baby being chucked off of Troyās walls. Odysseus didnāt even have to do it, man. Astyanax is importantā¦)
Thatās all I got for my gripes so farā¦wish there was more colorā¦.
I did like things though!
I like how the story started by invoking the Muse! That was super cool! It also sorta ended by invoking the Muse! Neato! Made me kick my feet.
I liked the music! I wish the scene where the crew unfurls the sails had more of a crescendo and hopeful tone to it, but I liked a lot of the music (especially during the sacking of Troy!)
I alsoooo liked Scylla. Iām biased because sheās my favorite part, but I really liked how they made her blend into the walls when she was done eating. Wish we couldāve seen her face though.
Loved the crew! Yay! I always love the crew. Can never make me hate them. Eurylochus was great! I think Nolan did a good job making them seem sympathetic!
Alsoā¦ the choice of not having Agamemnons face being shownā¦.i liked it. I think they shouldāve done the same for Penelope until the challenge. I know we all know what Hathaway looks like, but it wouldāve been cool!
Also ending the movie on the burning Trojan Horse was coolā¦I believe itās supposed to signify the fall of the Greek Civilization ( as we know it) to the āsea peopleā. Also I believe itās supposed to signify that Odysseusās trauma will always be with him.
Okay thatās all I have rn. Sorry if this seems poorly written itās like one am hereā¦my thoughts are really complex about this movie. I understand that why certain things were done and why things were changedā¦but I still wish some things were kept. If you liked it, thatās cool! Iām glad you did, and I can totally see why! If you didnāt, I can also see why!
listen it's not that I think epic the musical is a perfect adaption of the odyssey but it was an impressive passion project that knew what it wanted to be and knew what people gravitated to in the original work and it put significant effort into conveying this through its unique medium and tone to the point that hundreds of other people felt compelled to put effort into their own artistic interpretations of that version of the story. and that's really cool! and yes I would be more critical if it was a 100 million dollar project made by a professional because what the fuck do you mean you're a world-famous director and you cut the my name is nobody scene are you goddamn serious
