"I like this book because it teaches you that sometimes the best way to heal from the afflictions of this world is through our traditions and stories." Just a reminder that Banned books week at San Francisco State University is this Thursday! We just received a limited amount of posters, so make sure you participate. Today we bring you the great Úrsula Hilaria Celia de la Caridad Cruz Alfonso de la Santísima Trinidad, or better known as Celia Cruz! Celia is an ROMC favorite and we are pleased and honored to display her image as a shape shifting agent in our communities! Banned Books Week is the national book community's annual celebration of the freedom to read. Hundreds of libraries and bookstores around the country draw attention to the problem of censorship by mounting displays of challenged books and hosting a variety of events. The 2014 celebration will be held September 25th! September 24-25th, 2014 The ROMC will hold events on Thursday September 25th to commemorate this important week. Events include a virtual read-out of banned books on the Plaza Level of the CCSC, from 12:00 noon – 2:00 pm. Other events include a banned book display, give-aways, and film screenings in the Reading Room, Terrace Level, Room T-143. Refreshments will be served! This year we will be supported by a multitude of poets from SFSU SPEAK and as always will be giving away our new poster art by our new artist and mission local, Rio Yañez! ROMC now has new book selections ready to be read! Come read from a multitude of books dealing with health and healing, hip-hop pedagogy, indigenous pedagogy, prison industrial complex, trans* narratives and much more!!! Also, come check out the new postcards/with a link to our community report in the back with art by @melaniecervantes ! Our services, and those wonderful post cards are completely free and open to the community! Don't forget the kids too! We have multicultural kids books ready! ✊😁

30x48! Huge posters to set up for tomorrow's Richard Oakes Celebration. Join us from 9am-2pm at Jack Adams Hall at SFSU!

Mark your calendars! This collaborative project will be launched on November 1st at Solespace in Oakland. Through Dignidad Rebelde over a dozen people will create a space for the Bay Area community to celebrate some our beloved friends and ask the question: "What kind of ancestor will YOU be?" Richard Oakes Multicultural Center is asking YOU to participate in this exhibit by taking a picture of yourself and tagging it ‪#‎FutureAncestors‬ on instagram. The photos will be displayed at the exhibit! All you need to do is answer 2 questions. 1) What lessons have you learned from your ancestors that shapes the person you are today? 2) What do you want to pass on to future generations by the impression you leave behind? We will be taking photos for Instagram all day today and tomorrow! Come take a photos and get a prize from us! We are looking out! Dignidad Rebelde will be featuring new works that celebrate the lives of five featured Future Ancestors:Malkia Cyril, Jidan Koon, Pam Tau Lee, Karina Najera, Yosimar Reyes. Please help us celebrate their lives and their ancestors and to think about what we all leave behind to the future generations. Join us at the opening on November 1st starting at 6pm and going until late

Banned books week at San Francisco State University starts this Tuesday! Just to give you a taste of what we have for you this year, here is 1 of 3 posters we will be giving to anyone who is ready to read a passage from their favorite banned books! Come and choose between posters, tote bags, t-Shirts and free books! So much going on this week, we are extremely excited!
