Sad news today — Mad George has passed away. He frequently worked with hide and X-Japan, and even performed with them at the Extasy Summit in 1992.
Rest in peace, George.
In memory of SMG — here's an excerpt from the report on their legendary photoshoot with hide, the one with the 'severed heads'.

"In the makeup room, HIDE was lively, playing CDs. Just as I was about to take a break, George-san called us. Today, he would 'sever' HIDE's head for the shoot.
I followed HIDE as he bounced into the studio, camera in hand. HIDE was excited; I was feeling queasy (laughs). But I shouldn't complain—this was a rare opportunity to see such an amazing shoot. And there it was—the severed head… George-san worked quickly, attaching it under HIDE's chin. The studio was dark, lit only by a single light above a large mirror. The makeup was incredibly realistic and almost beautiful… but still, it made me feel sick. After a few minutes, HIDE's 'severed head' was complete. When he appeared before the fan club members outside the studio, he looked truly occult…

"Hehehe. I have a lot of gags I want to try after this (laughs)."
When asked where George-san was, HIDE said, "He's putting his own head on (laughs)."
As always, HIDE's photo shoots are full of interesting ideas. In the makeup room, stylist Kameyama-san, perhaps out of habit (laughs), asked HIDE to pose against a white background. HIDE obliged, and a little photo session started.
HIDE murmured, "I'm so happy…"
Mr. Hazumi brought HIDE a Polaroid of the prop. HIDE was thrilled: "Amazing! So cool!"
HIDE then ran outside. What was he up to now? He stuck his head out from the railing of the stairs overlooking the street—a public road. He laughed:
"When people pass by, they all glance this way, but then they pretend they didn't see it (laughs)." I'd probably do the same.
Just then, Sugizo from LUNA SEA arrived. His car stopped right below where HIDE was sticking his head out.
HIDE: "He's here, he's here! Sugizo!"
Sugizo looked up and cheerfully said,
"Oh! Thanks for your hard work!"
He hadn't noticed HIDE's odd appearance yet. As he came up the stairs, he saw HIDE with his 'severed head'…
Sugizo: "Whoa!!!" (laughs).
After that, HIDE continued his antics—eating a sandwich while still wearing the head, hiding his body behind a curtain to show only his head (laughs). HIDE's gags were endless.
Soon, the studio was ready. George-san's makeup was complete. HIDE's hair was finished, and the shoot with the prop began. Both artists positioned themselves behind the desk, showing only their heads. It looked like a scene from a movie—absolutely stunning. One female staff member had to leave because she felt sick. I, however, was starting to get used to it (don't brag).
As they were touching up the makeup, HIDE and George-san chatted cheerfully, heads tilted. The photographer remarked, "A smiling face in that pose is wonderfully eerie!"
The flash went off. HIDE's expression shifted subtly. George-san, clearly in his element, rolled his eyes and stuck out his tongue. HIDE got into it too, making increasingly wild faces. It was a fusion of two artists and one work of art—truly incredible.
"Next, let's do the interview scene!"
Interview? They turned to face each other…
HIDE: "So, what's your favorite food?"
George-san: "Omelette rice and fried shrimp (laughs)."
HIDE: "How about grilled meat?"
George-san: "Offal is great!" (laughs).
After a break—HIDE was clearly uncomfortable in that posture—they moved on to solo shots. HIDE returned to the makeup room. As I was about to follow, George-san called me. I turned and saw something rolling toward my feet… Eyeballs?! Aaahhh! Does George-san always live surrounded by such things? (laughs).
The next shot was even more intense. They attached slimy, dangling pieces to the cut part of the prop. It kept getting more extreme. With a black curtain covering the body, only the head was visible—floating. Ugh…
"Great! Perfect!" the staff cheered.
Shutters clicked. HIDE was fully in character, grinning, with blood dripping from his mouth. I couldn't take much more.
After the shoot, HIDE and the crew went to a Japanese restaurant for an interview, joined by George-san's team and Sugizo. It was an incredible shoot—so realistic. HIDE and George-san really hit it off. George-san, despite his 'Mad' reputation, was actually very approachable—like a friendly neighbor (sorry if that sounds rude).

ISSAY about this remarkable hair style: " It took 2 people 20 hours a day over more than 3 days to do that… It was super hard to deal with in daily life. I had to be extremely cautious because it’s dangerous when I board taxis or get on escalators and elevators. Because if my hair gets caught between the doors, it’s the end. You know, I’ve even been chased by elementary schoolers when I’m walking along the streets (lol). They’d be yelling, “What’s that? Look at that guy!” and come running towards me from 20 meters away, and when I realise it and turn around, they’d all stop (lol). It’s like, are we playing “Red light, Green light”? (Lol). Also, when I went to a friend’s house, their kitten kept playing with it so excitedly, y’know. When I said, “Right, I’m going home,” and stood up to leave, there was this weight pulling at my head and when I turned to see what it was, I found the kitten dangling from my hair (lol)".
