Did you know that after they switched to blind auditions, major symphony orchestras hired women between 30% to 55% more? Before bringing in âblind auditionsâ with a screen to conceal the the candidate, women in the top 5 major orchestras made up less than 5% of the musicians performing.
so I believe it was actually more complicated than that, in interesting ways. Because at first, when they did blind auditions, they were STILL hiring more men.
âŚThen they put down a carpet, so that high heels didnât clack on the floor, and BOOM women were suddenly getting hired.
The testers didnât even know thatâs what they were picking up on, which just goes to show how tiny of a cue it takes for misogyny to kick in.
The case of blind auditions for orchestras and how it dramatically changed the gender makeup of orchestras is a very illuminating example of gender bias, and an interesting possible way of countering it.
You can be sexist without knowing it. You can be racist without knowing it. This is not a moral failing; it is a moral imperative to remember that you are fallible, and take steps to limit the damage your squishy ape brainâs foibles can cause.
The final chapter in Malcolm Gladwellâs Blink (2005) describes this in detail.
What you donât usually hear about when discussing this blind audition process is that after the blind auditions were implemented, when women had gotten many positions in the orchestra, men no longer saw being a member as prestigious and the salaries for the entire orchestra dropped.
âWell wicked for good wasnât even a good movieâ
Emilia Perez was nominated for and WON in a musical category and youâre saying itâs too much for Paul Tazewell or any of the makeup team to be nominated.
Be so fucking for real right now.
The Oscars just continue to confuse me as an award show, specifically because since its conception (although it is a trait that definitely became more prominent and/or noticeable since the 90s), it has been proven time and time again how the logic behind the awards has very little to do with the movies themselves. Last year, voters confessed to not watching all the movies they nominate and vote on! Which is insane!
Instead, the logic behind the Oscars is âoh, this one is popular, letâs award itâ; âwait, no, popular is not good, only plebians like popular stuff, letâs award the one literally no  has heard of unless theyâre an extreme film buffâ; âthat person is always nominated, and has deserved the award in the past when we just didnât feel like giving it, letâs just give it now and then their fans will stop complainingâ; âoh, a personal friend of mine has a role in this one! they have my voteâ; âcomedy??? romcoms???? Take that back to television where it belongs! this is for serious stuff!â; âfantasy? the only people that watch those are children or nerds, be seriousâ; âoh, this one is about war! now THATâs a respectable subgenreâ; âanimated movies??? thatâs for babies. just give it to pixar or disney, theyâre the only ones that existâ; âI havenât watched this one, but I heard its like a love letter to hollywood, which is us! this one winsâ; âbest actress/actor? Ehhh, depends, how much heat are we gonna get if we ignore the person of color that actually deserves it? not that much? well, lets give it to generic white person with mild charisma again, thatâs a classicâ; âoh, this one deals with a serious issue but without promoting any actual societal or structural change that would make your average audience uncomfortable and wanting to enact actual change? THATâS WHAT IâM TALKING ABOUT!â.
Like⌠Thatâs all that it is. Every time. Oscars nominating and/or awarding movies and performers that actually deserve such praise is an exception, not the norm. Why does the general public still take this farce of a show seriously?
#Obviously I am upset about Wicked For Good being ignored #But I am not surprised #because this is always what happens with fantasy movies in a post Lord of the Rings era #Last year when Cynthia and Ariana were nominated I knew right away that they wouldn't win #Awards Shows haven't treated Ariana well for years now #And as for best actress: they had a south american #a woman in her sixties that starred in a film directly condemning the industry and what it does to women #a black queer woman #and a newbie white young girl #Oh I wonder which of them won... #(this is not a callout to the girl who played Anora - her performance was fine. It just wasn't really better than the others it was against <<<<<<<< ALLLL OF THIS
Even tho I Love Mikkey Madisonâs performance as Anora (itâs an amazing debut), I do agree that it wasnât a fair stack against the others
itâs almost as if Tolkien knew what he was talking about
Itâs almost as if Tolkien personally witnessed one of the bloodiest wars in human history and then used that to fuel his writing.

idk i just feel like "it is more acceptable and in fact encouraged to mock anything enjoyed primarily by women" and "being enjoyed primarily by women does not make thing feminist and righteous" are thoughts that can and should coexist
oh and also "even if the thing is bad your criticism of it can come from a place of patronising misogyny"
stolen off instagram but i laughed so hard when i saw this
The reactionary backlash to media analysis is a natural part of the wider "fascists hate anything intellectual" phenomenon, btw.
Wanting you to ignore the politics of Star Wars comes from the same exact place that wants you to substitute the germ theory of disease with the 'sickness comes from failure to be a good christian and most people who claim to be sick are just faking anyway' myth.
If you think about it, all these thinkpieces about how Millenials are âkillingâ various industries reveal a pretty colossal sense of entitlement.
Under normal circumstances, if a given industry finds itself unable to sell products to a given market demographic, weâd say itâs that industryâs fault for failing to offer products that that demographic is interested in buying.
It only makes sense to blame the target demographic itself is if weâre assuming that the established industries have some intrinsic right to that demographicâs disposable income thatâs being denied - which is clearly nonsense.
And I thought Millennials were supposed to be the entitled ones?
Thank you for putting into words one of the factors that has rubbed me the wrong way about the litany of articles and quotes about how Millennials are Ruining Everything â˘.Â
Like, I have worked very hard to put out real, genuine quality stuff. The best that I can make while offering it at a reasonable price, because a business transaction should be fair; you get a good product, the business makes some profit, everyone walks away happy. I am not even that old, and I have already seen a significant decline in the quality, craftsmanship, materials and labor sources in almost all of my purchases compares to the items that my family bought when I was growing up- and Iâm talking the expensive stuff, too! We have bought two Dysons from Costco in the last two years (returned both, thank god for Costcoâs return policy!) and neither one functioned as well as Meganâs old parentâs Dyson that was made in the 80â˛s. My grandmother has an old metal sewing machine that has been kicking longer than I have but Iâve been through about four sewing machines in my lifetime, each one managed to last twoish years. And these are the things off the top of my head, and it goes all the way down. Like how they started manufacturing secretly-smaller containers for things with the bubble on the bottom so you donât notice thereâs less product inside, or how Charmin made their rolls âshorterâ than they used to be but they are still technically the same number of âsheetsâ- I mean, I know I sound a little crazy, but if youâre Charmin and you reduce the amount of paper material per-roll by even a single penny, even a fraction of a penny, it would add up to much bigger profits; and a bigger expense passed on to the consumer, who wonât notice that the rolls are an inch shorter (except me because Iâm weird that way)
I see companies constantly finding ways to cut corners, pay employees less, and put out crappier merchandise, and then go âWhy wonât anyone buy this stuff?!â and I just donât get why theyâre confused.Â
Iâm resurrecting an ancient post, because nothing here has changed in the intervening time. The recent post about âtech hoardingâ because people arenât buying new phones on a regular schedule reminded me.
The companies definitely now feel entitled to profit and business, rather than earning it.

I've always disliked the creep of American culture over Australia, but I think this is the worst thing yet.
Retailers have started running Black Friday sales. This is very wrong because:
We don't celebrate Thanksgiving
Black Friday is January 13 1939, when bushfires wiped out 2 million hectares and killed 71 people
It's really upsetting that the first page of Google results for "Black Friday Australia" are all sales. Please. That is not our country.
Black Friday is the second largest (by area) bushfire in recorded Australian history. It lead to a Royal Commission on forestry management to mitigate future fires.
The fires currently burning in NSW and Queensland have destroyed 1.6 million hectares so far, which has been exacerbated by inaction on climate change and cutting of funding to fire services by Gladys "koala killer" Berejiklian.
Just...no. I can't deal with this. Please don't encourage retailers by spending money on their "black Friday" sales. Consider donating to the RFS instead.
Bringing this back because I just got my first Black Friday sale ad on fb from an Australian company and I want to start throwing hands.
It's frightening that only 1.6 million ha were destroyed at the time of my post, because by the end of Black Summer it was 18.6 million ha.
And to my fellow Aussies: ad standards won't do anything about advertisers running Black Friday sales, but you can directly message companies and tell them you think it's in very poor taste.
Bringing this back.
18.6 million hectares is three quarters the size of the United Kingdom. It is slightly larger than the US state of Washington. But hey, consumerism.
In 21st century America, there was a pervasive superstition that rats could force people to do their bidding simply by grabbing ahold of their hair. It was often common courtesy to remove your hat, either as a greeting or when entering another's homes, to show them that you are not being possessed by a rat, and can be trusted to behave.
(getting a taste of my own medicine) actually this is okay. Is this what you guys have bene whining about? Jesus christ

honestly, especially in the current state of the world, you all have GOT to kill whatever puritanical voice inside your head keeps insisting that if something is erotic it has no social, artistic, or intellectual merit.
stop acting as if someone canât enjoy both erotica and literary fiction or classics. itâs not some dichotomy.
stop acting as if erotic art canât be poignant and meaningful. and that includes all erotic art - not just fine art.
stop insisting that sex scenes or erotic material ruin movies and shows just because you, personally, get icked out watching it.
no, not all erotic art is high art, and not all erotic art is meant to invoke deep intellectual discussion - but insisting that makes erotic art valueless, a disservice to intellectualism, or whatever else - does nothing but add fuel to a fire built on conservative ideology.
