Vinny leaned back in his chair. Vinny was fairly young when he dreamed of becoming a cop. Never did he expect himself to be in an office setting. Paper work blanketed his desk, creating almost a moat around his computer screen. A calendar and other miscellaneous knick-knacks were tacked all around his tiny cubicle space. If he had known this was part of what it meant to be a cop, Vinny would have long reconsidered.
Scanning his station, only a handful of people were left. Either his co-workers were at meetings around town or on patrol duty. How he made it so high up in ranking was a complete mystery. He wasn't very well liked among his companions. More often than not, he bent rules and protocol just so he could get his task done. He did whatever he could to ensure that the criminal got what they deserved.
For awhile, he hadn't been called on any major cases. The number of reports he had to write continued to climb in numbers no matter how quickly he tried to write them. Today was a rare, but quiet day for him to catch up. Unfortunately, staring at the screen for hours upon hours bore him to tears. Vinny could no longer focus at the task. It was time for a smoke break.
"Five minutes won't kill. I mean, I'm only human after all," Vinny muttered to himself. He dragged himself away from his poor excuse of a desk. Throwing his coat over his shoulder, he waved the pack of cigarettes at the front desk security guards. Whether they were sneering at him or not, the officer wasn't sure but regardless, they watched him plant himself right outside the door for his much needed stress reliever.
He blew smoke in a steady stream. His breath mimicking, condensing in the same fashion. Were he not so tired, he might have reconsidered his choice of break actions in such cold weather but at the same time, he needed it. His three C's, chocolate, coffee and cigarettes, that allowed him to work so consistently wouldn't be complete without it.
Yet again, he was forced back to work, not even having a proper reprise from his duties when his phone went off. "Dammit. Can't a guy get five minutes to himself," He grumbled, flinging the half smoked cigarette beneath his boots. With one breath, he regained his composure. Once again he was focused and answered the urgent call. "Noisia here... What? Where? I should be fine by myself. I'm on my way."
The cop grinned excitedly. This was the perfect opportunity to postpone his work. Tapping the door's windows, the guards let him in and without stopping for anything, Vinny prepared for his departure. Occurrences like these were why he really became a dog of the state. He'd fetch whatever crook was tossed his way.
