regina didn't bother movingย right awayย , but she decided on staying in the doorframe .ย OBSERVINGย . it was in fact what she did best . one shoulder was braced against the frame as if she had placed it there onย purpose .ย as if the whole room in front of her was the beginning of her stage . but her eyes tracked every little change . the headphones slipping down robin's neck , theย efficiencyย of her hands on the controls , the way she mentioned steve as ifย mr farrah fawcettย was an answerย andย a defelction . of course harrington was involved , he alwaysย had his fingers in anything that had to do with hawkins . he had a talent forย orbiting thingsย that didn't make sense .
regina's gaze fallsย deliberatelyย to robin's shoes for a brief moment , and then back up again to catch theย flicker of curiosityย she'd been given in return . the corner of her mouth lifts as if she is toย laughย at what robin said . " wow. . . " she says lightly , finally pushing herself off the doorframe and closing the space a little , getting closer to the booth , moving into somewhere sheย shouldn't beย . but regina had a knack for being in places where she didn't belong . " so hawkins just lets people . . . claim entire radio stations now ? jesus that feels safe . so structured . love that for our town . " her heels click annoyingly soft against the floor as she steps closer , controlled andย unhurriedย in an attempt to contrast robin's restless energy with composure .
" skipped town is an interesting way to phrase that , by the way . " regina adds with a tone dipped in honey to cover the razorย edgeย of her words . " people don't usually justย abandon jobsย unless something makes them . " she breathes softly , " so you and steve just what ?ย volunteeredย because you are so interested in radio journalism ? " her head tilts , " or was it out of theย goodness of your hearts ? " her hand presses to her chest as she bends at the knees , " oh how charitable of you robin . hawkins thanks you for your service . " the sarcasm was gentle but obvious . " i'm guessing that isn't the only reason . . .ย " she speaks softly as she gets closer , just on the other side of the booth door . her voice no longer had to carry .
she wasn't accusing robin , but she knew that there was more to hawkins , after her own attack and beingย aloneย since , she was searching for others who knew . her fingers tap against the glass in anย unconscious patternย as she stands straight , her mask on as if she wasn't zoning out for a moment . " anyway buckley ,ย congratsย on the big promotion . veryย pirate radio chicย . " her gaze lingers for a second too long to be accidental , " please tell me that you're not about to play somethingย painfullyย on brand like the clash . i don't think i could emotionally recover if that is the soundtrack of the hour . "
robin can feel there is definitely an ulterior motive for regina being here. it wasn't like they were necessarily friends? they only ever had a few classes together, been science lab partners a handful of times. certainly not enough interaction between them to warrant a visit to her job. so she listens to the blonde speak with a tone that normally would make robin shrink down into her seat and accept the jabs. to maybe even blab about everything. but there is too much at stake for robin to be the pre-steve and pre-knowing about the horrors of hawkins version of herself.
instead, robin sits up straighter and does her best to pretend like she belongs here in this radio station. that it is perfectly normal for two completely underqualified recent high school graduates would take over a radio station without any prior knowledge (thanks to dustin for helping to pull that off).
but with the way regina's mind and gaze wandered for a moment, robin thinks maybe she knows more than most... the mind flayer did in fact turn into a big mush of several missing people's bodies. maybe regina was almost one of those people?
robin keeps her answer neutral with a shrug, "it sounded like a fun job to do with my friend while i'm on this forced gap year. but thank you, it's been fun." she laughs comfortably though at regina's comment about the clash, "you're safe for now... next up was madonna actually. unless you have a special request?"

chrissy's eyes widen in surprise. she hadn't expected that. every girl she knows has makeup โ this is just another thing that sets robin apart from every girl chrissy's known. not that that's a bad thing โ something about robin makes chrissy want to learn all about her, all of her quirks and habits and mannerisms.
โreally?โ she asks. โmy mom was teaching me how to do makeup in, like, the sixth grade.โ it was another part of the perfect image that her mother expected her family to have. after all, elizabeth cunningham clearly couldn't be that good at makeup if she hadn't taught her daughter how to cover up all of that embarrassing preteen acne.
she tilts her head, scrutinizes robin. โyou can borrow some of mine, if you want. i think we're about the same shade. i can show you how to do it, if you want?โ the offer hangs there in the air, and something in chrissy really, really wants her to say yes, but she doesn't know why.
it makes sense knowing chrissy has known how to do makeup since the sixth grade. she's always seemed to be one of the most put together people in the school... a direct opposite of robin who drew on her shoes and diy'd her clothes. "my mom is kind of the former hippie type so..." robin trails off, feeling like that was explanation enough for why she couldn't do makeup other than eyeliner and mascara. plus, chrissy is now offering to do it for her and the butterflies that often appear around the other girl start to flutter away.
she nods her head, careful not to do it too much to avoid getting poked with the ice again. "that'd be great! i'd love that actually." there's a spark of something in chrissy's eyes that robin is absolutely going to spiral over later with steve. she can already hear herself telling him all about this situation. but what does it mean, steve?!

โฏ .แ while she speaks, his mouth bends like he might argue her point. instead, he lets his shoulder press a little more solidly into hers as they walk, feeling his heart warm at just how grounding it is to be back by her side. โ good. i don't think i've got 'keep up with a bunch of nerds' in me right now. โ it's mostly a joke. steve shoots her a sideways glance and squeezes her shoulder. the house comes into view, and his attention shifts immediately, head tilting back as he takes it in. it's ... different. not the sterile, cinderblock dorms he'd imagined. it's lived-in, voices spilling out through open windows. steve ducks inside after her, looking around the lounge with a new, quiet curiosity.
he ducks inside after robin. the looks don't go unnoticed ใ they never do ใ as his shoulders square with an easy, practiced confidence trickling back into place like it had never left in the first place. he offers robin's housemates a nod, a half-smile. harmless, charming, & contained. then he's back with robin and robin only. they head for the stairs and the climb doesn't bother him, but he keeps it in line with her step. he's been quieter as of late, contemplative. silence was more comfortable to steve than filling empty space between him and someone else with mindless chatter. after robin had left, the rest of the adults trickled out of his immediate life. dustin and the others were off to college. he found his game in the adult world of hawkins, indiana, wasn't shaping up to be worth the effort when it just didn't feel right. and with that? nearly unbearable loneliness.
they reach the floor steve assumes is robin's by the slow in her step, the familiarity in her mannerisms growing stronger. he sways and shifts the duffel on his shoulder with a quiet exhale. robin opens the door and he has to pause in the doorway to take in the room, all the memorabilia. it hits his heart at a funny angle and steve has to look away before it digs in deeper. โ this is fuckin' sick, rob, โ he tosses his bag on the floor and pulls his shoulders into a stretch before turning to his younger friend. โ secondhand luxury and all -โ โ he teases her knowingly, holding out an open hand in reference to the air mattress.
โ and your housemates? they're cool? โ the question holds out between them before he breaks out a sneaky grin. โ and single? hawkins is a desert, let me tell you. โ steve adds, crossing his arms as he plops down on the twin bed with a carelessness that really only came out when he was with robin. the question is meant to be a joke, but they both know he's serious. after all ... an all-girls college wasn't the worst place to visit his friend.
robin can't help her big, nearly all 32 pearlies showing, smile as she watches him take in her room. her room back home couldn't be nearly as personalized given she was still hiding a huge part of herself from her parents. though she was considering potentially ruining thanksgiving this year... it's not like her mom doesn't already have suspicions about her and vickie's "special" friendship. so how much of a surprise could it really be?
but here in her dorm room, she is safe to express herself to the fullest in a way she wasn't sure could ever be possible without prying eyes. previously, the safest places she had was either steve's car or vickie's bedroom when her dad was working a night shift with a mom who was detached enough that they could lock the door and never once be bothered. both places where it was only robin and one of the most important people in her life. and both places she is incredibly grateful but she never had anything that was solely just hers until she moved into her dorm room.
"i'm so glad you like it." her eyes glance over at the polaroids on the wall and thinks she'll definitely have another of the two of them to hang on her wall before the weekend is over.
"oh yeah, they're the coolest! and many are single, my friend." she plops down next to him and rests her head against his shoulder, feeling so happy and content to have her best friend next to her again. when she lifts her head, she laughs a little and she tells him, "i may have a few in mind for you already." since she only had eyes for vickie, she'd on occasion look at the prospects for her semi-serious, semi-joke plan of getting steve to fall in love with a fellow classmate of hers and he'd have no choice but to come be her neighbor.
She smiles when Robin joins her at the shelves, her eyes lighting up at that answer. โThere are so many older movies that are so good! Some of my favorite movies are like...Rear Window, Rebel Without a Cause, An Affair to Remember--House on Haunted Hill.โ She knows she's rambling and she blushes a little, but she does like to talk about classic movies. She could probably list so many more, but she lets out a little laugh and she shrugs her shoulders. โDo those tell you everything you need to know about me? Because I like things like Jaws and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Doctor Zhivago too. I'm a woman of many tastes.โ
That said, Robin has a point about horror movies right now, and Ally's smile falters a little as she thinks about it. There are still flashes of what happened that she sees when she closes her eyes, which is the whole point of this. She needs to have a distraction and find a way to actually sleep, and she wants to think that a movie will help that.
โThe last thing I probably need is Freddy induced nightmares,โ Ally agrees, the smile refreshing as she looks at Robin. โPerhaps I need something that's just cute. Something that's just feel good fun? I don't think a tragic romance is really up my alley at the moment unless I wanna bawl.โ
"Okay, so no spooky and no romance." Robin taps her index and middle fingers like she's counting out the bullet points. "I can do cute and fun." Her arms cross over her chest as she narrows her eyes and thinks for a few moments. A number of movies cross her mind, but eventually she lands on something that recently cheered her up because how could anyone look at Debbie Reynolds and not feel a little happier. "I know just the one!"
She motions for Ally to follow her and leads her to the musicals section, hoping that Ally isn't a major hater of the genre (she might have to rethink their friendship if it is). "We got this one on tape only a few months ago so it's been checked out a lot." Robin pulls Singin' in the Rain off the shelf and hands it to Ally. "However, you're in luck today if this sounds like your cup of tea." She's watching her reaction carefully, hoping she did well. Suggesting to friends sometimes could be more nerve wracking than suggesting movies to strangers. A friend could think she's a total weirdo freak and never want to speak to her again for daring to recommend the wrong movie. She's aware it's a dramatic conclusion to come to because eventually she always remembers nothing could be worse than what her Russian captors did to her and Steve. It's like comparing apples and oranges.

since starting her work at the radio station, it felt like she kind of had more friends than ever. or at least more people wanted to talk to her or give her the time of day...not that she thought jane had ulterior motives for hanging out though! it was the love of music that ended up getting them chatting for longer than robin thought they previously would have simply because she happened to graduate two years before robin so their paths didn't cross all that much previously.
so when it seemed like the conversation was coming to a natural lull, robin inserted the idea, "hey!" she pointed toward the stall selling funnel cakes and looked toward jane with a bright smile. "wanna split one?"

robin mostly had been standing back watching mike struggle to make dinner while trying to hold back her laughter. not to make fun of him, but just because of how absurdly different they were raised. with robin's dad essentially being absent and her mom having to work two jobs, she has been cooking her own dinners fairly often for a few years now. she loves her mom and wouldn't ask for any other, but she can't help but think it must have been nice to have mrs. wheeler as a mom. "well, we can turn up the heat a tad... but not too much because we can burn the outside and leave the center cold." she turns up the dial and takes the wooden spoon from him, poking around at a few to check on them. "you have to be patient." she bumps him gently with her hip and teases, "i know that's hard for you wheelers."

Both brows lifted when a wrapped, large, and heavy box was placed in his arms, a quizzical expression even as he quipped,
โHey, I know itโs your first graduation of many, but people should be giving you gifts, not the other way around, Buckley. Free advice your walletโs gonna be thanking me for in future, just sayinโ.โ
Taking a seat on the Beemerโs hood, Steve pulled off the paper and back the box flaps, curiosity shifting to shock as the gleam of a silver tonearm caught his attention. His hands stilled, gaze scanning over the Technics lettering as a breathless โno wayโ escaped. Ever since heโd left the family houseโand, perhaps even more importantly, the family record player and his recordsโbehind, it had been a โone dayโ purchase, something he couldnโt afford or savings being used for more important things. Sure, heโd bought a few records here and there since, almost like a promise to himself that he would have that music in his life again, even if heโd already memorized all the lyrics, but the record player remained a distant goalโฆsomething that Robin had heard more than once.

He leaned forward, squinting before carefully lifting the player further from the box, eyes widening further as he confirmed that he had read the model number right, had noticed that distinctive ding next to the splatter plate heโd seen countless times when switching out records.

It felt like a goddamn miracle to be able to keep this secret for what felt like months. When in reality, it was only two weeks since she found out her parents would be getting her a new record player as her graduation gift. The thought to give Steve her old one happened almost instantly so the combination of excitement over her gift and giving Steve one was nearly too much to handle at times. Especially when just in the last week he complained again about not having a way to listen to records at home.
Robin had a feeling a gift like this would cause Steve to go through several emotional stages so she stands back with a smile and watched him open the gift. Maybe she should have started with the explanation that she didn't spend a penny on this gift (technically her parents did like a decade ago when they first bought it for themselves), but it was too late for that now.
"Steve, my beautiful haired friend..." Her hands found his shoulders to bring him back to reality. "My parents got me a new one for graduation! They've been so proud of me for what we've done at the radio station... anyway, you're basically doing me a favor by taking my old turntable."

Ally is a little too curious for her own good as to whether or not she might be right about this even though she was mostly just kidding. She kind of loves that Robin's even humoring her proposal, actually, and she leans against the counter more to take a peak when Robin pops the VHS into the VCR. The moment the scene plays though, Ally tilts her head back with a hearty laugh as Robin fumbles to eject the tape as quickly as she can because this is still a public place. Can't be playing that.
โOh, for sure--they watched that scene multiple times I would bet you money,โ she whispers while wiggling her eyebrows, and then she smiles as she moves to look at some of the videos on display. Ally did come in here for a reason, but she also isn't sure what it is that she wants to get. What exactly did you get when you were trying to lose yourself? โSo...what kinds of movies do you like to watch?โ she asks, fingertips trailing along the top of the horror shelf. โI bet you have a lot of time to watch multiple things when you're on shift.โ
"Can you blame them?" Had Robin enjoyed the movie more, she probably would have done the same thing. But movies about teenage boys basically growing a gorgeous adult woman that will do whatever they tell her to do isn't exactly the kind of movie she usually enjoys. She likes to think she's a bit more highbrow (even if she does have a habit of making crass jokes every now and again).
She pops the tape into the VCR reserved for rewinding the returns and comes around the counter to join Ally at the shelves. This is her favorite part of the job. Talking about movies and helping them pick something to watch. She felt like she had a fairly good skill at reading people and recommending something they'd actually like. "I like to watch a lot of classics. Stuff from when our parents were our age." It wasn't that she didn't like modern movies, she just liked the aesthetics and tone of a lot of older movies. Plus, the actresses were always angelically gorgeous.
"I used to watch a lot of horror movies, too. But lately those have been a little too anxiety inducing..." She shudders slightly at the image of the giant monster from the mall flashing in her memory and quickly changes the subject back to Ally. "What about you though?"
