This was one of the first images I began working on when I arrived at Weston Beach. I had been up all night shooting at Monastery Beach a few miles up the coast, so I was really groggy. The goal of this trip was primarily exploratory, so my first instinct when I arrived at the pebbled coastline was to make a mental note and come back later, I even wrote that in my field notes. I had been here a few times before, 10 years ago, and vaguely remembered that this was what a high tide looked like in this area, and that it wouldn't be like this again for a while, and then I saw this outcropping of rocks submerging below the tide line. Nothing happens fast with long exposure photography, especially when you've only had a few hours of sleep. The air was still and cool, and the sound of pebbles rolling in the surf crackled as the hundreds of birds sang in the newness of the day.
