I finally got home from my visit to the VA hospital in Lexington. While there I spoke with a 97 year old WWII veteran whom was held as a POW during the war. He made me smile a lot; I felt we had bonded. On my way home, a sense of extreme anxiety and depression overcame me as I started thinking about my father, whom was a WWII veteran as well. My father experienced profound problems and issues as a result of his service, but as a young person I never took the time to understand him. As I became older, growing into adulthood, the father/son divide seem to only grow. I fault myself, as I had put up barriers stemming from my on experiences in the military and personal relationships. If I could turn back time even for as little as one hour, I would say him “Dad, I’m proud of you, and for all the sacrifices you made for our family and country.” And for the remainder of our hour together I would love to just sit beside him and let a river of emotions carry us to a place of love and understanding. Today, a 97 year old man brought me to a place emotionally that I needed to visit.
