His family's car was in an accident that left his younger brother disabled for life. He was the only one in his family that wasn’t in the vehicle. Decades have passed since that fateful day, intellectually impaired, his brother is trapped in the past, still seeing him as the annoying big brother from childhood. Lost in time, never to fully return.

He talks of his brother acting out in frustration at times. Aware of the trauma and loss, emotionally distraught, and crying out for change that never comes. The effects of these kinds of brain injuries can last a lifetime, leaving the family in a constant cycle of grief and ongoing repair. Looping events from memories, not allowing people to fully break through into new seasons. A constant reminder, the cognitively impaired family member continues to live in the past memories, unable to withhold new information of current events.

The ongoing circumstances and suffering people can face behind closed doors in daily life. Unnoticed and ignored, in a world that passes by, self focused without care, can be traumatic in its own right. Being invalidated can be a major factor in long-term emotional outcomes. When we stop and look around, it becomes clear very quickly that many suffer in silence. During my own rehabilitation process from a severe disability, editing footage from these interviews stretched me into uncomfortable places. It forced me to see the human condition through shades of grey that don’t always have a happy ending.
