@mctrmt excellence. Always reblog.
I love, love, love The World Is To Dig, but I wish "What the Cat Dragged In" and "They Might Be Feral" had been situated elsewhere in the album so that "In the Dead Mall" could be the last song. It's such an amazing bookend to "Back in Los Angeles." Thanks to the wonders of technology, I can make it so... at least for myself.
How can anyone listen to these lyrics from "New Wave Will Never Die" and not think about the lasting damage done by that T-boning car accident? It's heartbreaking and sobering. And yet John Flansburgh goes on... brilliantly.
Painkilling's now a full-time job / Not to decide is not to decide / So get thee down to a coffee shop / Write it down and don't ever stop.
I’ve thought for a long time about what my dream guitar would be and I think recently I’ve realized I really love the shape of the Chessmaster, I think if I went for something like that in the future I would do maybe red with a black pick-guard and more of a telecaster base, but also now I’m wondering would you be bothered if someone had a guitar they used that was based on the shape of the chessmaster, I know that is your signature guitar so I can understand being protective over it
JF: I am not protective of it at all! And I would be most flattered to see the results. Sounds like you a moving in a Gretsch-style color way--very Bo Diddley. (Long history in that for odd shaped guitars) I wish I could give you proper dimensions but it is in the lock up right now.
Newsflash - the Chessmaster is currently in Music Jail.

Inserting this video from the 11 June 2011 Luminato Festival in Toronto for no particular reason.
Shouldn't even be close. Just sayin.
Oh, ffs. Just why.
*super okay with people not agreeing, but really?
Even in a dream, John Flansburgh is such a gentleman. He shared an umbrella when it started raining. Opened the libretto for John Linnell's opera so that I could follow along during the outdoor performance. (Wait. You already know all the words?) Shuttled me around on some kind of golf cart thingy between acts. We waved to Linnell; someone had just offered to buy the rights to the opera. As if.
If anyone thinks we have forgotten and moved on from Hair Ned, they are sadly mistaken.

I know what modern jazz is and I've got no kick against it.
I took the folding knife and the Dr. Bronner's soap...
TMBG is playing at the Boston House of Blues this weekend, and one of my oldest, most cherished friends is in the process of dying less than 2 miles from there at Mass General. Meanwhile, I'm over 2000 miles away. I am not where I need to be.
Cincinnati Reds organist plays Twisting by They Might Be Giants
Have you guys seen this?
JF: Not until now. We have heard about it, and we also know the Red Sox organist plays Birdhouse in Your Soul, but we are hoping someone might have it on tape and could post.
This is great! Aaalmost enough to make me appreciate baseball.
They Might Be Giants - MAY 2026 BROOKLYN STEEL SHOW RECORDINGS - 2026/05/28-30
See title. Three awesome sets at Brooklyn Steel performing Apollo 18, Factory Showroom, and Lincoln. I've seen them over 35 times prior to this and I'm still witnessing songs played live I've never seen in person.
Sound quality is great for each show, though the stage bantery moments are very quiet indeed. Flans would have rather done anything other than speak his words directly into the mics on stage.
Cool cover art for each show by @capitalq

Just in case you want this 1981 photo of John Flansburgh being John Flansburgh as a separate post.
A treasure trove of early Flansburgh and TMBG details.
