Impact of test backlog on DVSA theory test
Swot up to secure success
Learning to drive isnât all about three point turns and parallel parking, thereâs a small matter of passing the DVSA theory test before you can even book your practical test. And with so many learner drivers being forced to re-sit their theory tests because they expired during the pandemic, test slots are in demand. So if youâre lucky enough to have secured a space, passing the test is more important than ever.
And here at RoadHow, we want to help you to achieve that positive result.
So many learner drivers were left frustrated during lockdowns when the government decided not to extend the two-year validity period of theory test certificates, as they did for MOT test certificates. By the end of 2021, the practical test backlog had reached a record-breaking half a million, and some learners are being forced to pay for yet another theory test as theirs expires before their long-awaited practical test date.
The RoadHow team fully appreciates the impact of the backlogs, and we want to help you to pass your theory test with the minimal stress, anxiety and financial cost. And letâs face it, if you can pass your theory test first time then youâre off to the best start with your whole learner driving experience.
RoadHow has all of the learner driver questions from the DVSA revision question bank, plus practice video clips. So you can practice as many times as you like for the 2022 driving theory test, all for free. If you pass first time, thatâs the ÂŁ23 cost of a re-sit saved, plus a whole lot of time and stress you donât have to think about.
Weâve even got all of the revision questions you need if youâre looking to pass your DVSA theory test for motorcyclists and mopeds. Weâre ready to support every kind of learner driver.
With no foreseeable government support in overcoming the backlog, other than encouraging learners to be ready to pass first time, it looks like patience, practice and determination are the way forward for learners desperate to get behind the wheel.
So, whether youâre looking to brush up on your knowledge to re-sit your infuriatingly expired theory test, or if itâs your first attempt, RoadHow can help with free theory test practice, covering questions for the 2022 driving theory test.
Insurers benefit from innovative multi-layer driver insight
RoadHow teams up with Tracker to provide insurers and brokers a powerful added-value driver training tool with telematics capabilities.
To give brokers a powerful driver training tool to enhance their sales kit, the innovative app to help drivers be a better and safer driver, RoadHow, has teamed up with the insurance telematics and theft management solutions expert, Tracker Network (UK) Ltd. The new collaboration will help insurers offer added-value to their policyholders, improve customer engagement, and ultimately, reduce premiums and improve loss ratios. Most importantly, this exciting new partnership will contribute to improving driver knowledge and habits, making roads safer.
Designed as a hub for drivers and insurers, the RoadHow app delivers to insurers real-world data around a driverâs knowledge and skills, drawn from the user undertaking app-based on-the-go driver training courses and building a score based on their current level of driver awareness. When this is combined with Trackerâs insurance telematics solutions, which provides information on day-to-day driver behaviour, insurers have access to a unique and powerful multi-layer of data when giving quotes to new or renewing customers. In addition, the engagement platform gives insurers the opportunity to communicate with their customers as often as they wish to.
Colin Butler, Head of Partnerships at RoadHow comments: âWe are committed to improving driver knowledge and road risk with the goal of reducing accidents, injuries and fatalities on the road. Through our intelligent and innovative technology, we are helping drivers, particularly young drivers, expand their knowledge to become a better, safer driver.â
âBy teaming up with Tracker, we are offering a unique opportunity for good drivers to actively demonstrate they are a lower risk for their insurance provider. The app-based training courses are designed so that the user needs to put just one minute per day to improving their driver and road knowledge. Â As well as learning to be a better driver through the RoadHow app, the Tracker technology shows they are putting this knowledge into practice. This will help insurance providers achieve a fair assessment of a driverâs knowledge and driving habits, and ultimately, reward the driver with lower competitive premiums.â
As well as highlighting attractive premiums through better driving, brokers can also use other benefits as a sales tool; RoadHow also offers drivers great deals, rewards and discounts. These benefits will all contribute to improving the customer and insurer relationship, leading to higher retention rates, better brand engagement and loyalty, and higher profitability.
Luke Anyon, Insurance Sales Director at Tracker explains: âWe are constantly looking at ways in which we can help insurers actively encourage responsible driving amongst policyholders, especially young drivers, while providing them with genuine solutions to reduce insurer and broker loss ratios. Â Last year we enabled insurers and brokers to safeguard young drivers with the launch of our self-install telematics and tracking technology, which is today, delivering very clear benefits they bring in promoting safer driving amongst young motorists. Â
âHowever, the RoadHow technology and our insurance telematics solutions benefit insurers and brokers offering premiums to private drivers of all ages, as well as business drivers and companies operating commercial fleets. We are delighted to partner with RoadHow to enhance insurance provider and broker offerings and are very much looking forward to helping make Britainâs roads safer for all drivers.â

Announcing the partnership, Ben Taylor, CEO of AIS said, âOver the last year we have been able to significantly expand and diversify the capabilities of our platform culminating in the release of an all-new version during 2021. Digital-first customer service is now playing an increasingly important role post-Covid and we are proud to be at the forefront of these developmentsâ.

Tips to overcome pressures of DVSA driving test delays
Feeling the pressure to pass first time
Sitting in the driverâs seat on your test day is nerve-wracking enough, but this year the pressure on learner drivers to pass first time is greater than ever. Practical test backlogs of over half a million are causing financial and emotional havoc for those itching to get on the road. And the governmentâs solution? To encourage learner drivers to pass first time.
Already feeling personal and financial pressures, itâs not the solution that many students will want to hear. But, as the best option on the table, RoadHow shares some practical tips to help you achieve a positive outcome.
Tick off your theory test
Top of your to-do list is to pass your official DVSA theory test for car drivers. You must pass this before you can book your practical test. Swot up on your highway code and head to RoadHow [http://onelink.to/ynyuvb] for free theory test practice, covering questions for the 2022 driving test, to secure a pass first time. If you donât revise enough, youâre risking even longer delays to getting your licence.
Book the date
As soon as you hear youâve passed your theory test, itâs time to book a date for your practical. Even if you donât feel ready to pass yet, the huge backlog means that youâll have plenty of time for lessons and clocking up driving experience.
Plan your lessons
Once you have your test date, work with your instructor to plan towards it. If you know you have plenty of regular lessons scheduled in, then youâll feel more confident in your ability to pass. And if you have an extra-long wait before your test date, you can spread them out so you donât have more than necessary â the UK average is 45 hoursâ worth of lessons, but you may want to add in more to avoid big gaps between each one.
If the lessons are in the diary, youâll also be able to budget for them and avoid any last minute financial stresses.
Take a mock test
Your instructor should offer them, but if not make sure you do at least one mock driving test. Getting experience of test routes and test conditions is one of the best ways to prepare for the actual event so you know what to expect.
On the big dayâŚ
Unless you have nerves of steel, itâs perfectly normal to feel anxious at the thought of what lies ahead. But by the time your test date comes around youâll have hundreds of miles of experience under your belt and be well equipped to pass. Remember to keep calm, focus on what the examiner is saying and ask any questions if you donât understand the instruction.
