Farewell
Dear Parents, The class will show you the letter that went out today announcing my departure from Fern as of the 19th of December. Allow me to take this opportunity to thank you all for your supporrt and understanding throughout the year and a half. I have truly appreciated your involvement in the lives of your children. Mr. Alex Shteimen is going to replace me. He is tailor-made for this class, and I am sure the new year will begin on a very high note. Please welcome him, and offer him the same level of help that you so generously offered me. Wishing you all a most merry and jolly holiday season, and an unabashedly successful New Year! Greetings, Please remember you have a Science quiz tomorrow. Fill in the blanks, short and simple on Machines and Mechanical Systems. Know all your definitions and study notes carefully. Greetings! I am away for the whole day tomorrow and there will be a supply teacher in the class. It is a Day 4 and that means History/Geography/Maths/Gym/Script writing. Greetings! Tomorrow is Day 3. That means Maths, Science, and script writing for Xmas plays. Science: New concepts: Mechanical Advantage, Classes of simple machines. You will begin planning/designing Santa's new machine to send out presents as quickly as possible as his sled collapsed under the weight of toys this year, and is beyond repair. Maths: Khan Academy problems on triangles and intersecting lines- measuring angles without using a protractor. Complete work from today. Homework: VIPE work on a TV show. Should be detailes. Day 5. Dec 5th
Toomorrow is Day 5. All ISU oral presentations will be given tomorrow. Please keep your presentations short. You do not have to explain in great detail what you have discovered. You do have to tell us: A) What is your topic about B) What was your enquiry question C) What insights and new knowledge were you able to add to the existing body of knowledge. The point of the oral presentation is to entice us to read your ISU. Destination Imagination activities will start up again. You will be given time to create Xmas themed plays for the class audience only. Assignments that should be handed in: 1) First draft of Fall of a City stories. 2) Inference sheets filled out. 3) Evaluating sheets filled out. 4) First draft of Advice to a character. You will get a little bit of time to work on these tomorrow. Make sure they are ready for Day 1- Friday. Reminder: Please bring in IPRC review forms signed. Have a nice evening. Ms Basu

End Nov updates
Tomorrow is Day 5. We are going to be at Scarlett Heights School all day for a workshop on business and future success. Please come to school by 8:45. Come directly up to the class. Make sure you have your TTC tickets on you. Lunch will be provided and you won't need your knapsack, but keeping a pencil handy is always a good idea. Nov 29: ISUs due date. Please be ready to present your findings. Visitors will be in the classroom Friday morning for about 15 minutes and will be talking to you. Please be polite and welcome them to the class. If you are working on computers you must either bring your laptop to school or have everything saved on a stick which you will bring to school. You should be on the last leg of your project. Greetings all, Wednesday, Nov 20th is the final day for registering for the Montreal trip. Please make sure the first installment is paid. You may do so on-line or send cash/cheque with your son/daughter. Tomorrow is Day 4, and that means History and Geography and Art, and Gym. History topic: Conferderation- reasons for wanting to form a country. Watching a segment of the John A MacDonald documentary and writing a response after a discussion. Geography Topic: Population pyramids. Govt's role in controlling population growth, population trends in Canada and what that means for us. Please make sure you are up-to-date with your science notes,investigations, and experiments. Home work Club: It's homework club after school tomorrow. Some of you will be asked to attend. It's for an hour between 3:30 and 4:30. It's a good place to catch up on work if you are behind. I will be away from school on Friday. A supply teacher will be in place. Have a great evening. Please make sure you come to school with the following: All notes for ISU All resources you are currently using A folder in which you are keeping all materials By now you should know: How I am organizing my findings- by description, by cause and effect, or by problems and solutions, etc. How am I going to present my findings: skit, documentary, report, on bristol board, spoken word, dialogue, etc. What kinds of charts and graphic organizers am I going to use? The hour you are going to be given in class must be used for the ISU work. If you are not using the time productively you will be asked to do the work in the office. Remembrance Day
Greetings! Monday is Remembrance Day and we go to Fort York to mark the occasion. It is a senior division outing. Tuesday: Western Tech Open House. All afternoon. Everyone must bring packed lunches. We have early lunch in class and leave at 11:45. NEW UNITS OF STUDY: Mathematics: Geometry: Angle Properties of Intersecting Lines. Simultaneous Equations History: Confederation Geography: Population Density pyramids and analyzing world population density graphs and data. Science: Force, Work, Effort- Machines Language Arts: The short story. Writing an original short story incorporating the elements of the short story. Electronic games, cell phones in class
Dear Parents/Guardians, The situation with DSs and cell phone use in class has reached chronic proportions and making curriculum delivery well nigh impossible. From now no-one is allowed to bring electrtonic games to class or use cell phones for any other purpose than as a learning tool- as a calculator, or getting information and data needed for class work. I reserve the right to confiscate them and will hand them over only to you- the parents when you come to see me personally. Greetings Everyone, There is a lot of activity surrounding high schools and visits at the moment, so please keep up to date with the forms and messages the class is coming home with these days. Western Tech Visit: 12 Nov, 2013 at 11:45. Everyone must bring a packed lunch that day. It is also requested that all students come back to Fern for a ten-minute debriefing before being dismissed. No-one is allowed to get off en route. ESA protfolio must be ready for Dec 6th. Montreal Trip: Parents Information Night on Nov 6th at 6PM in the auditorium Remembrance Day: Senior division goes to Fort York to mark occasion. Class work: Science experiment must be completed and reflection and observations written by Wednesday the latest. Make sure summary of Great Lakes is entered. And all questions answered. Language Arts: Halloween stories must be submitted by next Day 1- Thursday. ISU is on going. Due Nov 29th. Please sign and send permission forms for Remembrance Day and Western Tech visit. Homework Club: a group of 6 students ffrom the senior IB program at Parkdale are tutoring students in the senior division for an hour each Wednesday (3:30-4:30) to catch up and get extra help. There will be a teacher present as well. All students in this class who need extra help and/or need to do catch up work are to attend these sessions. The IB students are very good. Week of 2nd October
Greetings! Tomorrow is Day 3 and that means gym, and Science, and from now on, Maths as well. Science: We will be carrying out one investigation individually in class, completing your Word Wall words and illustrations, and working in small groups to complete two tasks. Maths: We will continue from today's work- check up last week's geometry work, complete textbook work, and solve a Challenge problem. It is really imoertant that you pay attention to explanations and ask questions when you are confused or unclear. Please ask for clarification. Please make sure your writing tasks are up-to-date - one essay, two letters, similar piece, in your fave writer's style begin a piece of writing - you pick your form of writing, and the short story flow chart. Monday, September 30
Greetings all! Monday is Day 5. This means ISUs, Destination Imagination!!!! The new challenges have been posted. Looks fantastic, and there is something for everybody. It also means Drama and Art. You will be given some time to work on your Geography assignment as well. The Geography assignment is due Monday. You should have an analysis of the data - that is, a section that explains your understanding of the data. Please show what percentage of the land is being used for for purpose. EG: If you notice that your neighbourhood has many, many shops and few green spaces you may conclude that it is largely a commercial area and people make their living from small businesses such as shops and retail outlets. That the people live there because it's convenient to go to work from there. If your neighbourhood has a subway station it means that people can travel distances easily and may go long distances to work - it is an added convenience making your neighbourhood a more livable one. If your neighbourhood has a hospital it means it is well serviced. Ask yourselves: What kinds of things make my neighbourhood good/bad? It's the kinds of conclusions you draw from your observations that will make it a worthwhile finding. Rubric: * Is able to gather all/most/a few/ hardly any relevant data and represent it in an organized manner - graphs, pie charts, pictograms etc. * Is able to thoroughly/well/unevenly/haphazardly analyze data by drawing pertinent conclusions - can explain why something might be happening, Is able to give suggestions for changes and improvements. * Is able to suggest many/some/few/none changes and improvements Marks: 20% Reminders: Consultation letters must be handed in Vaccination forms to be handed in Agendas must be signed.
