sichengâs words donât surprise him - he knows heâs afraid, knowâs he wants the best for xuxi. âdonât be. i do too but- ⌠if it doesnât go well, it doesnât matter that much. weâve only been speaking properly again for a year, and we arenât even close. not like we used to be. if he doesnât accept it- us, then i donât need him in my life. all i need is you.â the bed dips a little as he sits himself beside sicheng. âwell, and maybe my mum just a little bit.â a soft laugh falls past his lips.

Sicheng knows that many in his position would find comfort in Xuxiâs words, in their bold certainty, but it isnât so for him; he knows Xuxi too well, that heâs recklessly stubborn, in a childish way. When he gets his mind set on something, when his heart is in it, he sees it through; thereâs no other option. If his father doesnât react well to this, Xuxiâs going to decide that they were to be estranged, and Sicheng doesnât know how he feels about being the reason. Couldnât they just say they were friends?Â
He sighs, looking up into Xuxiâs eyes, his stomach so tight that he thinks itâs possible that itâs petrified to stone.Â
âYou...you have to have your family, Xuxi...â he decides, his voice heavy, full of preemptive heartbreak, and a bit of guilt, because he knows heâs not brave enough to return the favour if he was put in the position,âYouâve...youâve made things better with him and...â
His voice breaks, as his eyes fill with tears, again, and he swears quietly, wishing that he could will them away. He hates to cry, but Xuxi has an uncanny ability to make him do so; usually with happiness, but today it isnât happiness.Â
He thinks for a second, taking a deep breath, trying to steady himself, but his lower lip wobbles like a babyâs, and he laughs, a sharp, bitter scoff of a laugh, as he gives up, lifting his hand to his brow as his eyes overflow.Â
âI just...donât want him to hate me.â he admits, his voice thick with sadness, feeling as pathetic as he thinks he possibly can; he wishes he could be like Xuxi, all cavalier and confident, ready to continue as they were in spite of his fatherâs wishes, but he canât. Try as he might, he still wants Xuxiâs dad to like him.
