Ever since my trip to Ecuador, I love avocados! Iâll eat them like an apple.  The climate in NC is not favorable for the savory green fruit, Yes fruit since it is a single-seeded berry. A fruit is âthe matured ovary of a flower,â according to University of California Agriculture & Natural Resources. Arenât I the plant snob now? If  I could get one to grow, it would be something like 5  years before fruiting, if at all.
I was chatting with some friends, they recommended that I take a seed and pierce it with a toothpick and hang the lower half it in some water. So I did and after a month or more, I saw a sprout emerge from the bottom of seed. I took the seedling and added it to a small planter to see what would happen.
In the meantime, I have Philodendron growing in a terracotta pot with some bamboo stalks for it to climb on. It never really flourishes but hasnât died either in 10 years. I toss the various seeds in this pot, like pepper, apple, oak tree helicopter seeds. From time to time, something will grow. Or at least until it gives up the will to exist in Casa De Rich.
 I recently had  something sprout  up, almost overnight,  that I didnât recognize. I wasnât  sure what it was but pretty sure it was some sort of seed I dumped in the soil many moons ago.  About this time the avocado seed I rooted, is starting to poke through the soil. I notice that it is very similar to the plant in  the Philodendron pot.
So I am going to try to keep these 2 plants alive.  Worse case scenario, I kill 2 more plants. Best case scenario, I have avocado trees in my house.
Anyone reading this that has some incite or helpful tips, please offer up your advice.
