This is why I have no sympathy whatsoever for anti-intellectuals who complain when discussion posts use too much academic language. "You can't expect me to whip out a dictionary every time you post—" BITCH I LOOKED UP "AHEGAO" FOR YOU. OUT OF THE GOODNESS OF MY HEART.

i hate how they market alexa as a ‘member of the family’ like that’s SO fucking blatantly insidious and terrifying also if i wanted an untrustworthy/cold/emotionless machine in my life i’d just talk to my fuckin father
#did we all collectively forget why Big Brother was called that
Alexa literally records EVERYTHING you say around it and can store that data and send it to literally everyone and it’s on the Wikipedia page for Amazon Alexa under the Privacy Concerns section!
the situation with harry potter is kind of unprecedented in some ways imo because it is maybe the largest media franchise in history to be created & owned by a single person who still has direct creative control over it. who is also a billionaire with significant cultural/political influence. like the usual "no ethical consumption under capitalism" type excuses shatter on impact when the bigoted author in question is logging onto twitter every day saying explicitly that when you buy the tim hortons ravenclaw donut she is using your donut money to fund the genocide of trans people. like with big franchises usually there's at least a little more diffusion of responsibility than this
The Forgers!
UGHHAAAAA SO CUTE SO PERFECT
I had a lot more to say, but now wasn't the time. I took a deep breath. 'Well, don't get into trouble,' I said. 'Last time you went wandering off during a case, you got yourself locked in the toilet.' 'A ghost shut me in, I keep telling you.' 'So you claim, but there was not a shred of evidence that—' But he was already gone.

'Nothing's got you,' I said. 'Your coat-tail's caught on a gooseberry bush.' A snort from George. 'That coat! It's too long! It almost killed you the other night as well.'
—The Screaming Staircase by Jonathan Stroud, Chapter 14
if they're gonna remake The Princess Bride, it should open with a kid sick in bed scrolling on his phone. his grandpa arrives with a gift--it's a DVD player with a disc already inside. grandpa hooks it up to the TV and presses play. and we all just watch the original 1987 film again.
i understand why writers keep their alien worldbuilding relatively simple for story practicality reasons but its always a lil funny to me when a sci-fi series is like "this alien species is a culture of bounty hunting warriors" like damn all of them? the whole planet? a whole planet-scale society built on bounty hunting? that seems highly impractical but i'll believe it for you bestie.
I love that Midnight Burger actually discusses this and uses this trope as commentary for the impacts of unmitigated capitalism on planets…
Sigius: A planet known for truth and journalism, because it has achieved a level of prosperity and privilege where it can actually care for these ideals.
Vapis: A planet known for scientific exploration mainly because it led to its collapse so any other stories/reputation surrounding the planet died with it.
Axel: A moon known only for farming, because it turned its entire planet into farmland to meet the demands of a capitalistic empire.
Earth: A planet known for its stupidity and entertainment value, because its progress has been completely halted by an empire that markets it as a reality tv show.
My woke take, as someone who has worked in both a public library and a school library, is that we desperately need both more books that are at a higher reading level but a less mature subject matter, and more books that are at a lower reading level but a more mature subject matter, because 8 year olds who are advanced readers are still 8 year olds and don't want to read about graphic violence and torture, and teens and adults who have learning difficulties or who are just later readers for whatever reason are still teens and adults and don't want to read about Billy the Bunny going to school or whatever the hell.

I've been spending the weekend with my 2 year old niece and I've reached a whole new level of exhaustion.
