You don't even have the energy to cry.

Your phone screen is currently glowing harshly in the dim apartment, displaying the numbers of your gpa. And as always, the numbers are proving that no matter how much effort you put in, you'll be mediocre.

You don't think. You just take a screenshot.

And before your brain can stop you, you send it to Rin.

No words. No emojis. Just the image.

You toss your phone aside and stare blankly at the wall. There's a lump in your throat and you swallow it down until it burns. Your mind starts replaying the same words— everyone better than you, everyone achieving, smiling, succeeding— while you're just sitting here, doing nothing.

You want to disappear. Just... vanish.

And at the same time, Rin is on the training field, pushing himself to his limits. When his phone buzzes during a short break, he expects something normal— maybe your usual "how's training going" text.

But when he sees the screenshot, he freezes.

No words. Just your result.

His brows knit in worry, lips pressing into a thin line. The other players calls him, but he doesn't move. He just stares at the image, then at your name,

A heavy silence forms in his chest.

He knows what this means— the silence, the lack of explanation.

You're spiraling.

Rin clenches his jaw, pockets the phone and finishes practice faster than anyone else. When he finally gets to your apartment, he doesn't say anything right away— just finds you sitting on the floor, staring at nothing.

He drops to his knees in front of you and gently cups your cheek, forcing you to look up.

"Don't," he says quietly, voice rough. "Don't do that to yourself."

You look away, ashamed. "You saw the result. I'm pathetic, Rin."

He exhales, the muscle in his jaw twitching.

"You're not.'

"Then what am I?" you whisper. "Because all I ever do is try and still stay mediocre—"

"You're mine. That's what you are." He cuts you off. There’s a tremor in his tone, rare for him. "You don't get to talk about yourself like that. Not when you're the reason I still give a damn about anything."

You blink, tears finally spilling over. He hugs you immediately and starts patting your back.

"You tried your best, that's enough. Don't you tell me the same thing when I lose a match?" He whispers softly, "It's time you start believing it too."

You grip his shirt, sobbing.

"But it's so frustrating, even though I try so hard I'm just a mediocre student."

Rin sighs and cups your face, resting his forehead against yours.

"You can be a mediocre student," he murmurs. "But you're the best girlfriend one could ever have. You're also a great friend, a great neighbour, overall a great person. Don't forget that."

You sob again, leaning your face against his palm.

"Thank you, I needed to hear that."

He just kisses your forehead and pulls you into his arm again.
