Ash said that he not afraid of death, and he don't understand why people are afraid of death
In my opinion, death means you're leaving forever and you can't see your love one anymore (your friends, your family, your lover) you can't eat with them, can't talk with them, can't laugh with them anymore
So, what we're afraid is not death, we're afraid of leaving without saying goodbye
But Ash doesn't have that person, so he is not afraid of leaving, after he met Eiji, he's still think that if he gone, no one gonna miss him, or prefer to be the one who leave than loosing anyone
We saw that he lose Skip, his brother and Shorter, if he lose Eiji too, he will break for sure
Also Ash has a mindset that he is a "troublemaker" so in his mind, he think that if he gone, everything will end, his love one (Eiji) will be safe, he choose to die after know that Eiji is safe, he's go back to japan now, he safe now
so when the death come, Ash accepted it
But one thing that Ash doesn't know is Eiji love is so strong, I guess Ash think that Eiji gonna find a new lover even Eiji can't forget about him, but Ash, you insulting Eiji love you know, his love for you is so powerful, you idiot
This is me, trying to understand the end of Banana Fish (and the social values in 80's is Involved too, but I'm not gonna talk about it 'cuz my English skill is in limit now lol)

I hate her, I know she did a really great job but I still hate her lol
